died 20th July 1904 Watsonville, residents Herberton 1882, California Creek 1881,

no mention of any siblings. Family always thought he was an only child.

Hi Jen,
I can't see a birth or any children born to a Thomas and Elizabeth. Unfortunately a lot of our early births were not registered.

I note this tree gives some births Lobethal and Gumeracha (Proximity of Mt Torrens)
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kathgen/surnames/397.htm
This tree lists Elizabeth's Death as 18 Jun 1854...there is a death listed as HUGHES :-\
Elizabeth HUGHES died 18 Jun 1854 not recorded Dist Ade 3 69. She was aged 55 status, relative, residence not listed.
Cheers Kris :)

MMM There was the baptism of Elizabeth listed to Thomas and Susannah in Vernham Dean but it was after the marriage to Elizabeth (29 Sep 1833)

He married in Sydney 28/5/1884 age stated as 41 years, birthplace ADELAIDE
Marriage notice states James was the second son of Thomas GIBBS of Adelaide.

Thankyou so much Kris for all your help, I will work through all that info.
Cando, that is a great find! The marriage notice would possibly have been placed by the couple
as it was in Brisbane Courier possibly on their way to Nth Qld where children were born. Reference to
"second son" is significant
The marriage was in St. Francis catholic church. Catholic marriages usually require baptism certificates,
maybe there is a baptism record for James in early church records. There is no record of birth registration
for wife Margaret JENNINGS in NSW either. At last I know she was the eldest daughter so I can place
her in correct order amongst her 13 siblings and have an idea of her birth year.

Mentioned in the news item linked by Sue that Elizabeth GIBBS died 9 Jun 1851 and buried Mt Crawford chapel yard [Mt Crawford Cemetery]. There is no death registration for Elizabeth on that day or burial record at Mt Crawford.
Perhaps the Catholic Archives in SA may have parish records to assist you further.

Application for free travel application 7076, embarkation no 4247
Thomas GIBBS (woodsman) 1 Male 28, 1 female 24, and 2 daughters aged 7 and 2
Ship Charles Kerr 17 Jun 1840
Seems to fit the two baptisms apart from mother of Elizabeth being listed as Susannah. Would pay to check that entry to see if the transcription is correct.
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Cando, Thanks so much for all the extra info. most of it is new to me. Just a comment on 1851 death
of wife of Thomas Gibbs in news item posted by Sue. No wife's name is mentioned and you
mention there is no record for Elizabeth Gibbs burial at Mt. Crawford. There is the possibility
that this lady was not Elizabeth Gibbs. It would be good to know who she was. It is such a sad
story.
Thanks again Kris, You have given me some great info. on Thomas GIBBS arriving SA 1840. All the dates
seem to fit. Just need to connect my ancestor.
Kind regards, Jen

There was one GIBBS death registered in South Australia in 1851 and it was the death of a child.
There are no GIBBS burials recorded at Mt Crawford.
There is also a mention of a Thomas GIBBS, Edgehill Farm who signed a petition in 1850. Other petitioners addresses were Gumeracha and surrounding areas.

Elizabeth HUGHES died 18 Jun 1854 not recorded Dist Ade 3 69. She was aged 55 status, relative, residence not listed.
Noticed the age at death of the Elizabeth HUGHES from the online tree does not match the age of the wife of Thomas on the Application for free travel.
I wonder if the local history group could help you further

Thanks for those references, Cando. Will try the historical society. I also noticed the discrepancy in the
ages of Elizabeth. Also found a death for an Elizabeth GIBBS 3/6/1885 aged 76 buried Nailsworth North
Road Anglican cemetery, doesn't seem to have a headstone. Apart from the death of Thomas Gibbs
in 1900 Mt. Benson, buried Kingston S.E. cemetery can you see any other deaths for a Thomas Gibbs
in S.A. in this timeframe? Looked at 1841 census, no relevant entries.

Thankyou for your response Neville, over the past 5 years, with the help of the info. given
to me by Rootschatters I have established that my gr.grandfather James Gibbs was the second
son of Thomas Gibbs and Elizabeth Hughes. He was born in Mt. Torrens, S.A. Elizabeth died in
tragic circumstances in 1851. I will send you a P.M.

Jen.
