I am researching my family roots and have got back to Rowland Jaques, land surveyor for his majestys customs at the port of Bo'ness who died in 1773.He was married to Agnes and they had many children.Several of the children were called Rowland, who all died at birth or early childhood.
I cant find his birth or marriage records and wondered if he might have been born abroad as his surname might suggest.
I would also like to find out where Rowland and his family were buried in Bo'ness.
Does anyone know of a site that might give me information as to burial grounds / churches in Bo'ness around that time, many thanks Dundee lass

I seem to have hit a brick wall with rowland jaques. I cant find his birth certificate or marriage certificate to Agnes , I do have his death certificate and will. Also death certificates for 3 of his children also called rowland and death of his wife agnes. I have a marriage certificate for rowland jaques who married elizabeth morton in 1731 in port glasgow (which may have been a first marriage for rowland or it may have been his parents marriage)
I dont know if I can get any further with this as it is so far back in time , but if anyone could give me any advice or help it would be appreciated :)

Looks like you are making lots of progress...even you have hit the wall!
Wondering whether that 1731 marriage you found might have been a first marriage as you think. This is the earlier entry I can find for Rowland potentially, from 1732, 12 December (surname Jacques) www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=91741
Further later entries on google books searching for "rowland jacques" 1700..1800

Hello, thank you I have found a similar entry but at a later date. My next port of call (if you will excuse the pun) will be to get in touch with the customs house in Bo'ness and see if they have any information or records for Rowland Jaques as he was a land surveyor for the customs house for some years. I cant find another Jacques or Jaques family in scotland around that time. I will keep trying, Im sure I will find out one day, many thanks

I have not been able to get any information from Bo'ness custom house / council as the records do not go as far enough back.
I have found Rowlands parents who were from England and his grandparents who were from France as I thought.
I would however like to find out where in Bo'ness Rowland lived and if possible find out where he is buried , any pointers or information would be appreciated, thank you :)

Hello, I am still looking for resting place in Bo'ness of Rowland and Agnes Jaques (nee mcallah/ mcaulah)
Rowland was a Land surveyor at Bo'ness Customs house, he died in 1773.
I don't have a date of death for Agnes.
They lost around 8 children as babies, they may also be buried with them.

In your other thread, you said you have his death and will - where did he die? What is the wording of the original entry of his death?
When you say he lived in Bo'ness, presumably that is the parish? Do you have a more precise abode?
Have you checked the original images on Scotland's People for all of these events?
In your other thread you say you have Agnes's death, but here you say you don't have it? :-\
You also say you have death "certificates" for three of their children? If so, where are they buried?
Presumably you have looked in England for a record of Rowland's birth as you say both of his parents are from England. What is your source of his information? Do you know the names of his parents and whereabouts in England they were from?
Do you have an approximation of when Rowland was born? (Age at death perhaps?)
What year was his first child with Agnes born? In fact if you could list names and dates for children, that might be useful. :)
Sorry for asking so many questions, but any answers might help with the search. :)

Do you know if they all died in the same area or different areas & are they all buried together or separately depending on where they died?

Rowland Jaques (no exact date of birth found as yet) he married Agnes Mcaullah (date unknown)
But as their first child was born in 1744, I would think that they married around that time.

I found a marriage certificate for Rowland Jaques and Elizabeth Morton 12th june 1731 at Port Glasgow stating Rowland was a tide waiter, I am not sure if this is Rowland's first marriage or Rowland's parents.But as Rowland's first child with Agnes was born in 1744, I think he married twice.
Rowland Jaques died 3rd july 1773 in Bo'ness (land surveyor custom house)
I have his will from scotlands people, but no age or a/d given.
Agnes Mcalauh/ mcaullah / I thought I had her correct birth and death,but discovered it was the wrong Agnes.
I have all the children's birth and most of the deaths, all from Scotland's People.
They do not say where they were buried or which parish they lived in, they only state Bo'ness as place of birth/death.
I have also found several Jaques families from similar time /dates living in Yorkshire England, who may be Rowland's parents /grandparents but no real positive proof as yet.
Rowland and Agnes's daughter Agnes Jaques born 1754 was married to James Strachan in St Cuthberts Edinburgh 12th november 1778. The marriage certificate does not give Agnes's home a/d only her father's name and occupation. It states that her husband James (cpt clerk on his majesty's war ship the Alfred) was residing in Crighton street, Edinburgh.

From familysearch Agnes' surname seems to be Mcaully which has many variants.

Yes, Agnes surname is listed in Scotland's People with several different spellings also
It may be an idea to list those to save duplication of effort so people know where/when (occasion) & by what name she was to help further?

The British Newspaper archive is quite interesting showing the distribution of the Jaques surname in the 1700 - 1749 period in England and Scotland, to me the frequency appears high around Newcastle-apon-tyne in England. Also some Yorkshire Jaques.

The personal name Gwyn is interesting to me as it seems Welsh. Wondering if the father came up from somewhere like Leeds in Yorkshire or Gwyn was named after someone he admired?
