Hi

What surname are you looking for?

If you have a date of death you could contact the supervisor at
Rathcooney who is really helpful.

To get his no, contact the Cork County Council, ( Water Dept -they look after the cemeteries section) and they will give you his mobile no.

Let me know the surname and I will see if I have a photo of the
headstone you are looking for.

Hi Topsy,

I went through the photos I have for Rathcooney and nothing for O'Donoghue.

I photographed most of the legible headstones in the older cemetery which is on one side with a very old church ruin.   Across the road is a very large new cemetery which I didn't do.

I will PM you the supervisor's name and mob no.

Hi Mary, I'm new to the RootsChat forum and am hoping you might be able to help. I was doing a general internet search for Rathcooney cemetery (for images) and stumbled across this thread. Having read it I signed up. You've photographed a lot of the legible headstones in the old part? I'm looking for the grave of a man called Thomas Dowd b approx 1830 d 1893. He is my great great grandfather's brother.

Thanks.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Just had a look at my Rathcooney photos and I don't have any for Dowd or O'Dowd.  There is one for O'Dowda which I think is
the Irish for O'Dowd.  It is for a William Norbury O'Dowda who died in 1929.

Sorry I can't help

Not at all, no problem. Thanks for trying, it was worth a shot. We know he's there anyway. Is there a register of burials anywhere do you know?

Hi Mary,

I am looking for a grave for an Ellen (Farrell) Kelly who probably died between 1911 and 1915.  Do you know of any Kelly graves there, or should I contact the CCC?  Also, which church is the cemetery associated with?  Would it be a good idea to ring the church office?

I am heading to this cemetery in May to find this stone but would love to make sure it exists before I hunt for hours...

Thanks

it doesn't really look like it but I think the first name must be Andrew. There's a 56 year old Andrew O'Donoghue listed as dying in Cork in 1912.

Hi Mary,
Not sure if this will reach you bute here goes:

Could I trouble you to take a look at what you have for the following (my grandfather and grandmother). I have taken the details from the Cork Archives Rathcooney book.

CORK UNION
Registry Book of Interments in the Rathcooney Cemetery

Entry No.          3949
Christian and Surname:      John Grant
Age:            61
Religious Pers:         R.C.
Occupation/Rank in Life:   Soldier
Condition:         Widower
Last Pl of Residence:      Tower St
Date of Death:         19.1.34
Interment:         21.1.34

Entry No.          3393
Christian and Surname:      Elizabeth Grant
Age:            50
Religious Pers:         R.C.
Occupation/Rank in Life:
Condition:         Married
Last Pl of Residence:      3 Tower St
Date of Death:         6.4.24

I don't expect these graves can be identified so I know it's a long shot.

Thank you for any efforts.

Regards,

Denis Grant

Hi Denis,

Unfortunately no Grant for Rathcooney.  I checked with the Supervisor at
Rathcooney to see if he could give me an idea of the location of the
Grant Headstone and he can't help. You can see from the register there aren't any
details as to grave location so that is a pity.

If I am there again I will keep a look out for your one.

I do have a Grant photo for the Barracks burial ground for a Charles Innes Grant,
who was a quarter master sergeant and his wife was Eliza but probably no connection
to your family?

Hi Mary,
Thank you so much for your help and especially taking the time to check with the cemetery.

I suspected that the grave would be difficult to identify after what had been decades of neglect. I find it odd that there is no record other than the register though when there are so many headstones from much older graves. Oh well; that's how it is.

[Yes, I was aware of the Charles Innes Grant and wife Eliza, if this is one of the the stones standing upright against the side of the  Barracks burial ground. I've kept open the possibility that these are the parents of Elizabeth Grant, i.e. my great grandparents but have been unable to solve the mystery.]

(Kindly disregard this last paragraph. I think it was way past my bedtime when I wrote it. I am aware of the Grant headstone you mention but the ggrandparent ref is incorrect. DG)
Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Denis

Hi Mary,
I am also the "owner" of the Yahoo group milgenire - Military History/Genealogy of Ireland and its Facebook mirror http://www.facebook.com/groups/milgenire/

It occurred to me that milgenire might be a good place to post your Barracks photos and names? It would certainly make me very happy.

Just a thought.

Hello there,
I'm desperately trying to find my Daddys brotehers grave. His name was Brian Manning, born in 1948 and believed to have passed between 1963-1978. I was wondering if you know of his grave being here? My dad seems to think he could have been buried by or with his other family members whose family name is Tanham? Is anybody aware of these?
Thanks for your help.
Kaleigh :-)

As you can see from some photos I posted earlier in this post Rathcooney is a very large cemetery.

I checked for the surnames  Horan,   Manning and Tanham and unfortunately I don't have any
photos with these names.     The newer section is huge and I have not taken any photos in that
part.

Sorry I can't help you

Hi

I don't have a reply, I have a question.
My mother is Veronica Galwey, we believe her family are from the Galweys of Lota line. During My research I found out there is a Private Galwey tomb in this graveyard. Is there a list of Galwey family members who are buried there?

Hello,

I'm searching for the burial location of a Cornelius McSweeney, died 29 May 1885 on 4 Boyce's Street, Cork City. I've been told the old section of Rathcooney may be a possible burial location. I've already checked online records for St Finbar's & St Joseph's and he's not listed there and the online for Rathcooney only start from 1896.
