Rebecca Libbish.  Born abt. 1861 Russia.  Death 1935. Leeds
Children

I'm after information on the immigration of them coming from russia or a direction for me to research as I have run out of ideas

Thank you in advance for any information

Forgot to put that they are in the UK 1901 census
And youngest children Harry and Sarah were born in UK In 1896
But none appear in 1891 census so thinking they immigrated to UK between 1891 - 1896

Got them in the 1901 and 1911 census,

Is there any way of finding out when they arrived in the UK? On what ship? Tried the passenger lists on ancestry but unable to find any record on them

Jewishgen might be able to suggest possible sources:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/UK/

archive.thejc.com has several hits, most appear to be relating to Barnet "Mr B Libbish" but I think there is a death notice for Rebecca.

Passenger lists for ships coming from Europe were not kept like those for ships coming from ports outside Europe, so you are unlikely to find them on the "incoming passenger lists" on Ancestry.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/
shows a Barnet Libbish (aka Liberkin), living in Leeds, who naturalised in 1921. If this is the Barnet who is aged 11 in the 1901 census (which seems quite likely), the full file should give you more info about where he was born and may provide details of when/how he came to the UK.

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/32935/pages/3898
 - here we see Harry changing his surname to Leigh.

freebmd shows Barnet marrying in 1921 in Hammersmith, apparently with three surnames: Leigh/Libbish/Liberkin
(which just means he was on the certificate as "also known as").

Hi there Ross,

I saw your post so promptly joined this forum. How come you are interested in the Libbish family history? Are you family, or working on your family tree or something? I am related so you have piqued my curiosity.   :)

Looking forward to hearing from you,

MS

Hi, my great- grandmother was Libish Roza, her father's name was Ksaveriy,  one of her brother's name was Josef. It's all I know, they lived in Russia(Ukraine), but after revolution (1917-1920...) some of them was killed, but mostly disappeared.

Hi Julia and Ross,

I can't seem to figure out how to reply personally to Julia's PM to me... sorry, so I'll post on here.

Julia: Is Libish your great grandmother's first or last name?

Ross: The Libbish clan in Leeds, UK is very small... that is where most living Libbish's are. May I ask for whom you are researching? Who is working on my family tree? Just curious. I do not know much at all of my late grandfather's history (Barnet [Billy] Libbish), other than Liberkin and Leigh are other family names related to Libbish. I would love to know your results in your research. Thanks.

Here in Canada, there are loads of Libins... not sure if they're related or not.

Cheers,

MS

Hey Julia,

That is so cool! I am also aware that my ancestry on my mother's and her father's side goes back to Russia. But that's all I know...

Are you in the UK?

Michelle ;)

What do you mean came back to Russia? Is surname "Libish" widely spread in you region....  never met Libish here in Russia, and now really surprised to meet somebody :) If you know something please tell me, what about their nationality?

Hi Julia

The only place/area I have is Vitebsk, Belarus and surrounding area in 1887 as a start point for a place of birth, the Libbish name is common in this area.

Hey Julia,

I'm from England, but I know my ancestry does go back to Russia, although not sure where in Russia. Mind you, I left England and live in North America now.  All the Libbish's I know live in Yorkshire, England. Perhaps that is from where Ross is researching. ;)

Smiles,

Michelle

P.S. Ross... for whom are you researching this? :)
