Title: Lost Aunt Mary Thomson Turner born 1908
Post by: janeygee on Sunday 23 October 11 20:19 BST (UK)
 ???

Hi Everyone,,,,

I'm back with another query to find this elusive aunt of whom you all
have kindly helped me with in the past, she emmigrated to NY in 1930
from UK and believe she lived & worked in NJ as a domestic-servant,
she made 3-4 trips back to Scotland in the first 5yrs  info I was given
by you all,,now I have found info on Ancestry which is a good bet it is
her,,also found on Soc/Seg death index info which may be her,so if any
one can help uncover this mystery I will be eternally grateful,,

Status; Mary Thomson Turner;
DOB; 16 Feb 1908
Place; Partick,Glasgow,Scotland,UK
Parents; Daniel Turner & Isabella Wilson Cowieson;

Soc/Seq index says Mary T.Turner died 1995 Cape May,NJ; # issued
Pennsylvania; US Citizenship granted 27 Aug,1941 in Philadelphia
Penn. says Mary age 33yrs. which would be correct with her yr of birth.

Can anyone check the citizenship record and let me know if it gives
any of the details above,and perhaps an address or next of kin,,,

Appreciate all your help as always,,,

Kind regards;

Janey; ::) ;)

 WOW ,,,, thank you so much Sandra for your quick reply,
can I ask just one more favour,, is it possible for me to
obtain a copy of this Petition,,?? and if so , where do I
get it,,???

Do these applications  for citizenship list parents or occupation,
I can understand if Mary later moved back to NJ, we had many
cousins living there and in New York City area,but nobody had
any contact with her for years so the mystery continues.

I put an note on find a grave for a look up at a cemetery in Cape
May,NJ.but no luck so far,so any info is a bonus at this point,,,

Appreciate all your help with this ,,thanks again

Kind regards;

Here is the prior thread on Mary, in case anyone wants to take a look:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,419549.0.html

Typically, in that time frame, there are manifest markings indicating that the person sought naturalization.  I don't see any on Mary's first voyage, so I'm inclined to think she wasn't naturalized unless it was via marriage.

The 1932, 1933, & 1935 passenger lists said Mary was returning to 2 East 91st Street, New York City.

 :)

 Bunch of thanks Shellyesq for that little bit of info ie;address,,,
I do know that Aunt Mary travelled back to Scot for a visit in '1933'
joined by my other 'Aunt Jane Thomson' and two other girlfriends
who may have been Scots or Irish, don't know their names,all the
girls were in domestic-service jobs,,the only one I know where is
Aunt Jane,she was in service to the 'Woolf-Family' on West End Ave
Manhattan,from 1930 to 1936 when she left to get married,she
became a citizen in 1947.Family history is there was a 'falling-out'
as Aunt Mary Turner broke off her engagement to Robert Thomson
brother of 'Jane',,,,,Robert was working in NY but sailed back to Scot.
between 1934-36,,he later married 'Nellie Turner' sister of Mary,,,and
Mary was never talked about again,,,,I've always wondered what ever
happened to her,,she stayed in USA but I don't know if she married,,
The mystery continues,,,,

Appreciate all help and ideas,,,

Kind regards;
Janey; ::)

Hi Janey,

Just went back over some of those passenger lists again and noted the same address as Shelly did above.  Perhaps you have this information but that address belonged to Marys employer Louise Carnegie. The address 2 East 91st Street at Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, was the Carnegie Mansion.
Here is a picture and some details below -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnegie,_Andrew,_Mansion

Louise Carnegie (born 1857)  appears on many passenger lists to the UK. I think her full name was Louise Whitfield Carnegie.

Louise Whitfield Carnegie. Died New York 1946.
Father -  John W Whitfield and Mother -  Fannie Davis Whitfield
Spouse - Andrew Carnegie.

Source:- England, Andrews Newspaper Index Cards, 1790-1976

On Monday June 24 th 1946 at her residence in New York City, Louise Whitfield Carnegie widow of Andrew Carnegie, daughter of the late John W and Fannie davis Whitfield of New York  xxxxxxxx (some text missing here because it was over written with 27-6-1946 - mother of Margaret Carnegie Miller.

There may have been a few connections to Scotland but one was the marriage of  Louise Miller to James Frederick Gordon Thomson  a 41 years old Edinburgh lawyer)  Louise Miller was 18 years old and heiress to part of a $30,000,000 steel fortune of her grandfather Andrew Carnegie. They married at Dornoch. Scotland

Many articles on the Carnegie family on http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html
(Just incase you might be interested)

This shows Andrew Carnegie Scottish Connections

http://www.scotcities.com/carnegie/andrew.htm

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/carnegie/gallery/carnegieman.html

Looking at the 1920 census Louise Carnegie (1857) had many staff - butler and servants from Scotland.

Hi Sandra;  "WOW",,I can't believe it,aunt Mary working for the'Carnegie's'
That would have been a feather in her cap for sure,,,she made trips back
to see her family every year for a number of them,,guess she was paid
well in those days,,,,
When I was a kid growing up in Scot.we were reminded we were NOT
the 'Carnegie's' ,, ::)
My mother had a cousin who was a Butler in NY around 1925-30 named
Archibald Backhouse,his wife a maid,Jean Wilson Backhouse,we got told
stories how they went to 'Bermuda' for winter's,,,,

Can you see the names of any other servants where you found aunt Mary  ???
I knew Andrew/C was Scottish so I'll give a look at their site,,,mucho thanks

 Hi Sandra;   That is our "Archie" alright,he was my Mother's first cousin,
although he was too old we heard he had to register for the 'Draft' in
NY,,,,,I didn't have a death date for him so thanks a bunch for that,I'll
fill in the TREE,,,,,

I think aunt Mary arrived in NY in May/1930,,would the 1930 Census
have already been taken,, ??? I wondered if the Carnegie Mansion
would have been her first position,,,

I looked at those census sites you gave and see what a number of
servants they had,,but it is a huge mansion,,, ::)

Thanks again Sandra,if you ever find anymore info on aunt Mary would
appreciate it as always,,,

Kind regards;

Title: Re: Lost Aunt
Post by: shellyesq on Sunday 08 January 12 02:45 GMT (UK)
April 1st was the date of the 1930 Census, so Mary would have missed it.  The 1940 Census comes out this April, so maybe that will give you some more information.

On the Social Security Death Index, there are lots of women named Mary with that birthdate.  Out of them, the only one with a last residence in New York City was Mary Ryan, died Apr. 1985, last residence Brooklyn, New York, zip code 11215, Social Security number issued in New York before 1951.  There are a few other Marys listed with that birth date who lived in towns relatively near New York City & died in the mid-80's.

The SSDI also has another Mary Ryan with a last residence in Brooklyn, who was born in 1907 and also died in Apr. 1985.  Just mentioning that in case someone finds an obituary/death notice for a Mary Ryan and it's unclear if she's your Mary Turner.

 :)

Thanks a big bunch Sandra and Shelly for all your fantastic help with
my request,you guy's are the greatest,,,,,
I will be waiting on the 1940 US Census this coming Apr hoping it
may give me a clue to Mary if she was still at the mansion.,,,,
I do know from family history she never made any trips to Scot.after
WW2 started,we heard she became a citizen mid-late 1940's,,,she had
an uncle Hugh Forrester Thomson out in Kearney,NJ. relating her to
the Thomson's,we thought her middle-name was Thomson,,my mother
was a Thomson also,we came to Canada in 1952 and as families go lost
touch with a lot of 'the clan',,, :'( in those days families could not afford
to visit relatives even in USA
Aunt Mary's father died Scot 1967 and her mother 1975 and far as we
know she never went home for their funeral,,,

My thanks again and I'll keep digging if I  find anything on Mary will
keep ya posted,,

Kind regards;
Janey; :)

Hi,

I've checked out the Scotlands People site for you. The 1911 Scottish Census shows your aunt Mary living with her parents Daniel and Bela and her older siblings Katie, George and Nellie in Partick. Daniel Turner is a joiner in the shipyards.

Hope this is helpful. You might be able to trace descendants of George Turner maybe?

 WOW Sandra,,I'm overwhelmed,, ::) this is fantastic history for
the tree ::) Archie/B went out to NY in 1925,,his occupation was
always a 'Butler'  he had an uncle on his father's side who was
also one and trained him,, as a young girl in Scot my mother
 told us how they all were amazed at cousin Archie's high-
faluting-ways ,he was older and a bit of a snob growing up,,
Archie had two brother's  Joseph & Frank who followed to NY,
the family all came from humble beginnings in Partick,Glas/Scot.
Their parents James & Mary Bushe Backhouse both born Ireland.

Mary Bushe was my mother's aunt,,,sister of her mother,family
originated from Londonderry & Larne,,NI,,,,,

Last note Sandra, I think the DOB for Jane(Jean)Wilson Backhouse
is 1891, she and Archie were maid/butler for a family in Dumfrieshire
Scot. before emmigrating, they never had any children,I'll check my
files for confirmation,,,

Kind regards;
Janey; :)

WOW Sandra;

First let me tell "Roots Chat Mods" what an outstanding job
you have done providing all this terrific info on my 'cousin's
and my deep appreciation is now given,,I hope you get a 'Gold
Star' for this,,,,

I did know bits & pieces of the Backhouse history,now I can fill
in more of my tree.I remember Esther & Andrew Irvine had gone
back to Scot.and I have son James (b) 1936 there,, Andrew's father
died and they took over his  Florist/Fruit/Store,,,I did not know of
their vacation back to NYC in 1946,,they would have stayed with
Andrew's brother James Irvine,he also emmigrated in 1920's,,,
Esther made another visit to NYC about 1956 after Andrew had died
staying with the cousins,,she passed away in Glasgow 1957,, :(Son
James Irvine passed away around 2002,last year I just found his
widow Margaret,and son Robert Irvine and corresponded with them.

Now for the news on Nora Backhouse, I emailed the parish church
got a reply asking me to write a letter instesd,so will do that,will
also try contacting the funeral home for info on that cousin ???

One last note Sandra, I have no idea who Euphemia Kent is ???
I know the names of the Backhouse wives/spouse's but she is
a new one,, ??? ::)  Will keep ya posted on my progress,thanks
a big bunch again,, :)

Euphemia Kent is a very intriguing mystery.  I don't know how popular the name Euphemia was at that time but I started searching to see what I could find that might give us a clue about her.  Interestingly, there is a person of that name in  Lackawanna, Erie, New York in 1930 with a husband John.  Euphemia is from Scotland and seems to travel many times between Scotland and the USA, sometimes through Canada.  Haven't gone through all her journey's yet but I am hoping to see if she could be the link, so will plod on with that angle for a while.

John Kent 28 Born Scotland. Married at 28 years. Immigrated 1924. AL. Elect welder at steel mill.
Euphemia Kent 24 Born Scotland. Married at 24 years. Immigrated 1928 AL.

Euphemia was born 27 th March 1906 in Glasgow. Scotland.
The SSDI shows a death record -

Euphemia Kent. Born 27th March 1906 and died 4 th May 2003
Last Residence: 34293  Venice, Sarasota, Florida. State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1967-1968)

On a couple of border crossing entries from Canada to the USA in 1941 and 1950 it shows Euphemia going to the address 351 Marilla Street, Buffalo 20. New York.

On a 1946 entry going to husband John at 551 Marilla Stret. Buffalo. Names a sister Jean Sirr, 41 Newland Avenue, Toronto. Ont. Stated Euphemia was resuming residence. Looks like she first landed in Montreal in 1928 on the Athenia. Had been in the USA before from 27/12/1929 until 8th Sept 1946.

Hi Janey,

Could be a "red-herring" but -------Can see an entry for a Euphemia Wilson who arrived from Glasgow to Quebec Canada on the Athenia 2 nd September 1928. Single. Shop Assistant. Father Mr Alexander Wilson. 150 Den Walk. Methil. Fife.

Could Euphemia be related to Jean/Jane Wilson who married Archibald ??

Hi Janey,

Think I have answered my own question about Euphemia - she was Euphemia Irvine - according to an anc.try tree she died in Glasgow 21 st October 1955.

So probably the sister of Andrew Irvine.  ;D

 ::) ???

YO Sandra; :o

I'm blown away by " Euphemia Kent " ??? I know Andrew Irvine
had a sister but I will have to double check the files as I thought
her name was "Helen"(b) 1904-6 Glasgow. ::)

Euphemia was a common name in those days,they were always named
after another 'rellie' ::) The one who died on 21Oct,1955  ??? I'll check
but I'm almost sure "Andrew" died in 1955 too ??? ,,,
Esther Backhouse Irvine was my Mother's first cousin, they were the
same age,grew up together, best friends, my Dad was best friends
with "Andrew" they grew up in the same Glas.area,that's how he met
Esther,,they were never apart and Esther was 'lost' when "Andy" died
she passed in 1957 we think of a broken-heart,,my family was out here
in Canada then so we never saw her,,,,,, :(

 Now Sandra about James Irvine, this is weird,see what you think  ???
Esther Backhouse Irvine had a brother James Backhouse(b)1891 Glas,
he went out to NY 1925 returned to Glas and married" Flora Wylie Walker"
29Jan,1926  her father was 'David' mother 'Agnes Jane Kerr',,I wonder
if Margaret Wilson Walker could be 'a rellie' ??? I see she remained in Ct,
USA.passing away 1985,,do you see any children to them,, ???

Last did you see ' a tree' on 'A,,,,try' for Backhouse or Irvine,, ??? ::)
I'm really filling up the pages here Sandra,,my thanks again,, :)

Kind regards;

Janey; ;)

Hi Janey,

The tree seemed to be more for Irvine - only 1 Backhouse listed and that was Esther.

Margaret Wilson Walker was the daughter of James Walker (1872 Perth. Perthshire. - 1948)  and Sarah Mulvagh (1867 - 1907)

The address for James Walker on Margaret's passenger list entry was 7 Crosslee Street. Cardonald.

James and Margaret Irvine only had 1 daughter in 1930 Manhattan, New York,

James Irvine 30 Born Scotland. Married at 22 yrs. Immigrated 1928. AL Houseman. Private Family
Margaret Irvine 31 Born Scotland. Married at 23 yrs. Immigrated 1929. Housekeeper. Rooming House.
Sarah Irvine 7 Born Scotland. Immigrated 1929. AL. (Now Deceased)
Robert Moore 26 Roomer
William Craddock 34 Roomer.

Sandra

Added James and Margaret lived at 34 Hope Street. Glasgow, prior to immigration.

This was Sarah Irving.
Sarah I. Hamcke. Born 15 September 1922 and died 21 January 2005
Last Residence: 06794  Washington Depot, Litchfield, Connecticut,
SSN issued: New York (Before 1951)

 HI Sandra;

Had a look at my file for James Backhouse,occ;Butcher;res; 20 Chancellor
Street,Partick,Glas,(mar) Flora Wylie Walker;occ Chocolate -Packer; res;
3 Chancellor Street,Partick,Glas;(f) David Walker;occ Overseer.GPO. (m)
Agnes Jane Kerr; I can't say this is or is not the same Walker family,, ???
however the address in 'Cardonald'  for Mgt Walker's father is miles away
from Partick on the other side of the River Clyde,, ::)

Now the other query is my mother & Esther B. had connections to the
Perthshire area growing up,all the 'rellies' spent summer holidays in
the wee village of 'Dunning' 8),,I have pictures of my mother & Esther
there and one of my aunt's taken with 'George Walker',,,Flora's brother. ::)
The mystery deepens,,eh,,, ???

Now for the Irvine family, I know that Hope St,Glas. is not that far from
where 'Andy's father had his wee shop,and I do know Andy's brother
James was in 'service to a family out in Hewlett,Long Is,NY as Esther
and him moved out there to work after they married in NYC.

Can you see any parents names for "James Irvine" ??? while I try to
 find my file on Esther & Andy,, ::),,,

Kind regards;

Janey; :)

I can see David Walker with his parents - William Smith Walker 1833 - 1907 and Flora Wylie 1834 - 1901.  Can also see he had a brother James born  1872 N Cumnock. Ayrshire who still lives with the parents in 1891 but not in 1901 ?
But the tree entry said Margaret Wilson Walker's father James was born Perth. Perthshire 1872 ?? We are looking for 1872 Ayrshire ??  So far I can't see another connection.

 HI SANDRA;

Here I am to update ya on the good news of my Irvine/Backhouse
rellies,,got a nice email from Anne/CT and she sent me some pictures.

Sarah Irvine(b)1922 Partick,Glas,Scot; was her Granmother,,,,
daughterof James & Mgt Wilson/Walker Irvine,she passed away,2005
in CT/USA, she was an only child,there is a nice picture of her about '3'
yrs with her father James and I was just amazed at how much alike
Andrew & James Irvine were,they could have been twins,,,

She said her granmother made many trips back to Glasgow to visit the
family,she herself had met all the Irvine family, including my cousin
Esther,and son James,,she had spent some years at St.Andrews Unv.
though did not say what she studied.
There are some nice pictures of her Granparents,Sarah & Bill Haimke,
her parents,and an aunt. The special one is of my cousin Esther taken
in the 'wee-shop' they ran until they passed away,it's lovely to see and
brought back memories of my childhood ,it had to be taken after '1945'
as that is when my brother & I would go there to pick up the 'Fruit-Box'
Esther would have made up for us.

Have to say Sandra all that wonderful Irvine history you found for me
I passed on to 'Anne' and she was very pleased as she said it was all
new to her,she only had some of her granmother Sarah,Grt/Granparents James & Margaret, and she did know about Jane Bell Irvine McCorquodale
died 1927  of "TB' and "Archibald' remarried a "Christina ??  there were
some children and Anne said the McCord/kids are out here in Canada,
she gave me their 'tree' address which I will get in touch.

I told her James son of Esther/Andrew passed away 2000 but wife Margaret still lived on same street as my late brother,neighbors for 30yrs,
I said I visited her when I was over in 2010.

 I will try to scan her the pictures I have of Esther & Andrew,and let ya know
any more info she sends,,ok,,,,

Kind regards;

Janey; :) 8)

Sandra
HI SANDRA;
Just re-looking at these posts and wonder if you can tell me if on the
passenger-lists for 1932-33-35 when aunt Mary made her trips to UK
do the lists show 'Louise Carnegie' was travelling on the same ship,, ???

I remember my mother saying aunt Mary stayed for one/two months
in Scot.on these visits, I'm wondering if she stayed working in the"C"
 residence in Scot,,,appreciate any info you can find,,,thanks a bunch,, :)

Kind regards;

Janey; ::)

Hi Janey,

Fingers crossed  - good luck.  ;)

Have looked back through a few passenger lists -  it looks as if Louise travelled 20 th May 1932 on the Aquitania and Mary 5 th  June 1932 on the Cameronia

Also Louise travelled 17 th May 1933 on the Aquitania and Mary 29 th May 1933 on the Aquitania.

Mary never gave the Carnegie address in Scotland  ???

Hi

I've only just come across this post and have read through it with interest. My link is Jane IRVINE, sister of James Irvine who married Euphemia Bell LAIDLEY. I would certainly like to get more information on James and family. One error I noticed regarded Euphemia IRVINE who married John Turner KENT in 1922. She died in 1955 in Glasgow and not in the USA. John Turner KENT died in 1970 in Glasgow.

I hope that you are able to reply after such a gap since the last message.

Hi Sandra

My apologies. I missed the post 40 reference. It was reply 42 referring to a death of Euphemia KENT in Florida in 2003 that I noticed. I have only just downloaded the death of Esther IRVINE (nee BACKHOUSE) in 1957 to find her maiden name. I will now go back through the posts to extract the relevant BACKHOUSE information and add it to mine.

Do you have any specific links for this IRVINE family tree? I've only got as far back as 1801.

Hi Braven;

Thanks a bunch for your P/M,somtimes it is a good idea to reply this way
as one never knows when you may have a living-rellie ::) still around so
I can say in this instance we can reply on board  as it seems safe to pass
on the info. :) Sandra as you saw was a gold-mine of help to me in finding
the rellies ::) you have noted the Backhouse connection I have to say the
last person in line passed away in 2004 and I have been unable to connect
with another cousin there in NY/USA.

I will dig out my file on James (b)1860 Glas/Scot (mar) Euphamia Bell Laidley
and see what I can post may be of some help to you on R/C" ::)
I think my research on the "Irvine" name shows a lot came to Glas/Scot
from Ireland,Orkney Isles,Perthshire,etc, ::) I was most interested in the
Perthshire area as my family had connections there.

Lastly feel free to post any query or info on "R/C" as the "Mods" here :)
are the best,second to none when it comes to research,,, :)
Will get back to ya soon,,,,

Hi Janey

Thanks for your reply. I now have most of the recent IRVINE details. I am missing the marriage date and place for Andrew and Esther and I have no record of children for Jane Bell and Archibald McCORQUODALE between 1920 and 1927. Do you have any details?

I have also been unable to account for Jesse IRVINE b. 1858 at 221 Holm? Street, Blythswood, Glasgow, son of James and Elizabeth (nee Robertson) and brother of James b. 1862. He does not appear on the 1861 census, but I cannot find a death for him between 1858 and 1861.

I have photographs of James, Margaret and Sarah, but none of the others. Have you found any online?

Let me know if you need details of the earlier family.

Best wishes

Hi Janey

Thanks very much for all the McCORQUODALE information.

I have James ROBERTON and Elizabeth McINTYRE as parents of Elizabeth ROBERTSON (b. app. 1831 - d. 22.4.1913), but no further details. I have tried looking for a marriage.
I have James IRVINE (b. app. 1801 Scotland) and Elizabeth McINTYRE (b. app. 1806 Lanarkshire) as probable parents of James IRVINE, along with six siblings.
I can find no link regarding the same maiden name.

For the children of James IRVINE and Elizabeth ROBERTSON I have a son (name unknown, from BC of Elizabeth McIntyre), Jane (app. 1854-1893), Elizabeth McIntyre (1855-1856), Jesse (1858-?), James (1862-1930) and Martha (1865-1865), so I am keen to know the names of the two I am missing.

A photograph of Andrew and Esther would be great.

Finally, regarding Euphemia Bell LAIDLEY, I have followed your posts explaining her adoption by John Thomas LAIDLEY (I presume she was illegitimate), but I am unaware of anything else.

Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Braven;

Been going through my files,must admit I do not have a lot on the
Irvine families as a whole, I just stayed mostly with cousin Esther
Backhouse married to Andrew. "Andy Irvine and my Father were
old school pals having grown up in the same area of Glasgow,and
they both sailed off as ship's crew to New York City from 1924 on
and after Esther arrived there in 1927 to join her '3' brothers Joe,
Frank,Archie, my Dad & Andy would visit them and that's how they
met.The two of them "Stayed" in NYC and got jobs in a hospital,
later in 1933 Andy & Esther came back to Glasgow to manage the
'shop' and they lived at #1248 Argyle St,Overnewtown,Glasgow.
their son "James Irvine 1V" was born there in 1936,,,,
Now for the rest of my files;- I have,,,,, ::)

James Irvine(b)1801 Scotland(mar)Elizabeth McIntyre (b) 1803;Scot;
1Feb/1823 registered both parish's Gorbals & Eastwood,Renfrewshire;
their kids are;- James(b)1824 Gorbals,Lanark;Andrew(b)5Oct/bapt,30/Oct
1825;Mary(b)25Dec/bapt3Jan/1830;Gorbals;Martha(b)10Feb,bapt26Feb/
1832;Eliza(Elizabeth)(b)26Sept,bapt,13Oct/1833;Gorbals,Lanark;
On 1841 Cen Lanark; James gives age as '40yrs';Elizabeth 38yrs; on
1851 Cen,Lanark family are living in Blysthwood Dist; ??? and James
gives his birth place as "Dumfrieshire",, ??? I never found him there but
 of note a lot of "Irish" families came over to this area and there are
tons of "Irvine's in Ireland,, ::)

James Irvine(b)1824 Lanark; ::)(mar)Elizabeth Robertson(b)1831Lanark;
13July/1851,Gorbals,Lanark; on 1861 Census Dumbartonshire there is a
James & Elizabeth both (b) Glas/Lnk; at 168 High St,Close,Dumbarton;with
a daughter Jane Irvine(b)1854,Glas/Lnk;

This where it gets 'weird' Braven, I have a note on file for the following;-
Elizabeth McIntyre Irvine(b)5Sept/1855;Jesse,(b)27Apr/1858,Blysthwood, Lnk;James(b)24Feb/1862 Dunoon&Kilmun,Argyll;Martha(b)24Apr/1865;
Dunoon*Klm,Argyll;Their mother is listed as "Elizabeth McIntyre Irvine" ???
I am 'stumped',, ::)

I will not give you anymore Braven till you digest all this and can compare
it to what info you have  already,I'll give you more info on "Andy's family
next time I hear from you,,ok 8),,till then,,good hunting,,, :-\

Kind regards;

Janey; :)

Hi Janey

I have James IRVINE b. 1826 rather than 1824. Also, your census information differs from mine. I have -
1841 census living at Bridge Street, Gorbals, Glasgow
  Jas IRVINE       40   Umbrella maker  N
  Jas IRVINE Jun   15   Ap. tailor      Y
  Elizabeth IRVINE 35                   Y
  Mary IRVINE      11                   Y
  Martha IRVINE     9                   Y
  Eliza IRVINE      7                   Y
  Jean IRVINE       2                   Y
  Helen IRVINE      4m                  Y

1851 census living at 7 Bridge Street, Gorbals, Glasgow
  Elizabeth IRVINE 46 Head  Umbrella maker  Glasgow
  Elizabeth IRVINE 16 Dau.  Umbrella maker  Glasgow
  Jean IRVINE      11 Dau.  Umbrella maker  Glasgow
  Margaret IRVINE   5 Dau.  At school       Glasgow
  Jessie IRVINE     2 Dau.                  Glasgow

I therefore have additional children from the census -
  Jean/Jane IRVINE b. 1839 Gorbals
  Helen IRVINE b. ?.2.1840 Gorbals
  Margaret IRVINE b. app. 1846 prob. Gorbals, Glasgow
  Jessie IRVINE b. app. 1849 prob. Gorbals, Glasgow

I am not sure when James died, but presumably between 1848 and 1851.
James (b. 1924/26) carried on the family business of umbrella maker, as did his sister (presumably under her maiden name).

Slater's Royal National Commercial Directory 1878
Jane IRVINE - Umbrella manufacturer at 7 Bridge Street, Glasgow

I also have -

Pigot and Company National Commercial Directory - date unknown
Jas IRVINE - umbrella manufacturer at 3 New Bridge Street, Glasgow

Jean/Jane IRVINE m. Francis McHUTCHISON 2.6.1857 and on the 1861 census Margaret and Jessie are living with them at 11 Bridge Street. Margaret is an umbrella maker.

See post 74 for my list of children of James and Elizabeth. I have checked all the birth certificates and can find no reference to Elizabeth McIntyre IRVINE as the mother. They are all Elizabeth IRVINE nee ROBERTSON.

In post 73 you say you have 8 children for James and Elizabeth and I have only found 6, so I am really keen to find any others.

Best wishes

Braven

YO Braven;
I think you may have better access to the records than I do, I see
a few connections to your list but "Irvine" is such a common name
I find it hard to sort them out who is who,, ???
I do have James Irvine(b)1822 age 39yrs,occupation "Umbrella Maker"
wife Elizabeth ?? ::) age 36yrs,and daughter "Jane" age 7yrs,,say they
are all born Glasgow/Lnk;address on 1861 Cen Dunbartonshire County,
168 High Street,Close,Dunbarton,, ???
Now if I know I think Renfrew came under county of Dunbartonshire, so
is this the correct guy's,, ???

Next 1871 Census Lanark I have Elizabeth Irvine,Head of house,age 38yr
(b) 1833 occ; Dressmaker; daughter Jane age 17yrs I cannot make out
her occupation, some kinda "Eliot Maker",, ??? also son James 8yrs (b)
1863 Dunoon,Argyllshire,their address 227 South Wellington Street,
Hutchesontown,Glas/Govan Parish,,,I know that place is also the "Gorbals"
as I have other 'rellies' lived on the same street,,, 8)

I definitely have James Irvine (mar)Elizabeth McIntyre 1Feb/1823;Gorbals
&Eastwood/Renfrew, no parents names but '4'kids;Andrew;1825;Mary;1829;
Martha;1832;Eliza;1833;all(b)Gorbals,Lanark;so I'm sure this is them,, ???

I have James Irvine(mar)Elizabeth Robertson;13July,/1851 Gorbals,Lnk;
I have kids;John(b)1854 Renfrew;Elizabeth McIntyre Irvine;1855;Tradeston,
Mary Jane;1857;Greenock,Renfrewshire;Jesse:1858Blysthwood,Lnk;James
1862-3;Dunoon,Argyllshire;Martha:1865:Dunoon/Argylsh; On 1871 Census Glasgow/Lanarkshire they are living at 7 Surrey St,Gorbals,and James is a
"Shipyard Labourer",, ??? most of these places are "Ports"

I will leave this with you now Braven,just one note ,on your list you have "Y" & "N" is this in answer to the question on the census where it asks if the
person was "Born" in the County,, ???; James has an "N"  meaning "NO",, ???

Kind regards;

Janey; :)

Note; These records are only as good as the person inputing them,,I take them in stride;most people in those days had no idea of age or "DOB",,
they were basically uneducated;

Hi Janey

You have the correct family and address in 1861. They had moved from Glasgow to 168 High Street Close, Dumbarton and then on to Dunoon, Argyll. They then moved back to 227 South Wallington Street, Govan by 1871, but James was now a commercial traveller and was away for the census. When James died in 1872 Elizabeth moved to 42 Old Dumbarton Road and was there until she died in 1913.

Jane is a shirt maker on the 1871 census.

The Y and N are for born in county or not, as you worked out. Because you have found the marrige registered in Gorbals and Eastwood, Renfrewshire, it might be reasonable to hypothesise that James was born there, as it is out of county.

You have John IRVINE b. 1854 Renfrew on your list. He could be the son mentioned on the birth of Elizabeth McIntyre IRVINE that I had not identified by name. Do you have any details? Can you remember where the information came from?
The same for Mary Jane b. 1857 Greenock.

Lastly, I am a little confused by your 1871 census entry for 7 Surrey Street, Gorbals as you also mention Elizabeth at 227 South Wallington Street, Hutchesontown in 1871 for the same family. The second address is certainly the correct one. Could you please send details of the 1871 Surrey Street address.

Best wishes

Braven

Hello,
I am the Anne who was mentioned earlier in this thread; Sarah Irvine, daughter of James Irvine and Margaret Wilson Walker was my grandmother. I'd love to exchange notes and photos with anyone else who is researching these Irvines.

I'm particularly interested to know if anyone knows the identity of Euphemia Bell's father. She was the wife of James Irvine 1862-1930, and the mother of James, Andrew, Jeanie, and Euphemia. She used the surname Laidley/Laidlaw at times, but her birth is recorded under her mother's surname, Bell.

Best regards,
Anne

Hi Janey,

I am new to RootsChat & this is my first post. I want to talk to you about the Archie MacCorquodale discussion but first I am sending a test message. Not sure how this works exactly. Please send me a reply and then I'll get the discussion going for real.

Thanks!
