Title: Esposti
Post by: Louise Chehdan on Friday 28 October 11 15:56 BST (UK)
Hello
I am tracing my family tree (surprise surprise) and I know that my great grand parents Nicola(s) and Maria Esposti ran a coffee shop on Penarth Road in the early 1900's with anther member of the family Carey Nardini. I would love to know what the coffee shop was called or if there is a way of finding out.
Thanks to anyone who can help . Louise

1901 census shows this:

Reference RG13, Piece 4987, Folio 154, Page 12
176 Penarth Road, Canton, Cardiff

Esposti, Nicola  Head  M  29  Refreshment Shop Keeper  b Italy, Italian subject
Esposti, Maria  Wife  F  30  b Italy
Esposti, Teresa  Daughter  F  5  b Cardiff
Esposti, Joseph  Son  M  4  b Cardiff
Esposti, Louis  Son  M  2  b Cardiff
Esposti, Charles  Son  M  3 months  b Cardiff
Nardina, Carey  Sister-in-Law  F  34  Assistant shopkeeper  b Italy

There is no name of the shop, just the address!
Also "Coffee Shop" is written on the census in addition to the description above.

Maybe a birth certificate of one of the children may shed further light on the address

June 1899 Esposti  Lewis     Cardiff  11a 415

Mar 1901 Esposti  Charlie     Cardiff  11a 393

PS. Seem to be a few Esposti births in Cardiff between 1895 and 1908

Hello yes I have almost all of the family tree of the Esposti family (which has led to finding long lost cousins!) but I have lots of memories of my father telling me all about his grandparents coffee shop except for its name! (Charlie born in 1901 was my grand father) but as my father was born in 1925 I don't know if the coffee shop came later or even how long they had it! Thanks anyway

Historical Directories has 2 mentions

Bennetts Business Directory 1900 describes N Esposti as "Ice Cream Maker" at 176 Penarth Rd.

The Cardiff Directory 1901 lists him amongst private residents - no reference to the business - at 176 Penarth Rd.

Thank you  for your help what a shame I never thought to ask my father such a simple question - maybe it was just "Esposti's"!

Hi, this is Carl Esposti. I live in Los Angeles. My Father was Thomas Derek Esposti, brother of Ronald Esposti - both from Cardiff (Penarth rings a bell!) - son of Thomas Esposti and Nelly Esposti. My mother (*) has a cousin who has a lot of information about our family tree.

Hello
Well another cousin we are all over the place! Was Thomas another son of Nicolas and Maria? I may know of your mothers cousin as I think we are several  researching the family and  thanks to people like her I have some lovely photos of Nicolas and Maria.

Hi, I wonder if anyone could tell me if a Marie Esposti (married to Howard Jones, with a son called (*) Jones) fits into their tree any where?
Marie was my grandmother, Ive found a birth entry of 1928 for her and I think she died around 1956 when my father(*) was around 12.  He remembers hearing the name Teresa and thinks Marie had a brother called Jo who was married to Alice.
Because of her relatively early death i know very little about the Italian side of the family.  I was always lead to believe that Marie's family had an ice cream parlour and lived near Splott in cardiff, also that as she married a non catholic her family did have much to do with her after her marriage.
If anyone can give me any information I would be most grateful.

Hello October123  :)

Welcome to Rootschat!

You can search for many births, marriages, and deaths on freebmd:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

There is a marriage in 1937 in Cardiff, but that would mean that the 1928 birth would be the wrong one. There is a birth of Mary Esposti in 1908, which is a possible.

Kind regards
Morgan

Hello Mary Esposti was my Dads aunt, so yes I know of her. She was Nicola and Maria's daughter born around 1908/9 and they did have a coffee shop/ Ice-cream parlour in penarth road. I have a photo of her wedding day with my grandfather Charles Esposti standing in it only I don't know how to attach a photo! when I use the attach photo  at the bottom of the page I don't see anyway to get to my photos! Teresa was a sister there were also her brothers Joseph, Louis, Charles , Peter and I think Mary was the youngest! I have contact with a few of the family in Cardiff, thanks to sites like this.
So yet another cousin for me and my sister!!
Kind regards
Louise

Hi Ichedan,

Thanks for the response and further info.  I note that you have completed most of your family tree.  With such limited information we are finding it very hard.

I wonder whether you have any info with regards to Marie Esposti and whether she is actually my father's mother.  The only info I have is that she died when my dad who was born in 1942 was 12 years old.  I also know that Marie had a brother who was called Joe and that he was married to Alice.  Does this link in with your family tree at all.

Any information that any one has with regards to these names would be extremely helpful.  My father has been trying to trace any family for years.

Louise,
Trade Directories (on line) have Nicholas Esposti at 176 Penarth Rd 1900/1901 - "Ice Cream Maker" + the 1901 Census. But by 1911 he is no longer in the business. Checked the Trade Directories in Glam Records Office, Cardiff today.

Two available for 1905 and 1906 - no mention of an Esposti or Nardini

Kelly's Directory 1910
Mardine (with an M), Lewis, Shopkeeper, 69 Carlisle St, South Splottlands

Western Mail Cardiff Directories 1915, 1920, 1922, 1924
Lewis Nardini, Confectioner, 69 Carlisle St, Moors

Western Mail Cardiff Directory 1929
Lewis Esposti, St Louis, Dalmuir Road, Moors
Nicholas Esposti, Confectioner, 69 Carlisle Street, Moors

Western Mail Cardiff Directory 1932
Lewis Esposti, 52 Mynachdy Road, Mynachdy
Nicholas Esposti, Confectioner, 69 Carlisle St

The next Trade Directory was dated 1949 - no trace of an Esposti/Nardini in the business.

So, Nicholas, having dropped out of the business after leaving 176 Penarth Road (between 1901 and 1905) returned to the business by 1929 when he's at 69 Carlisle St (previously Lewis Nardini's business). Explains why family members have memories of ice cream at Nicholas' post WW1?

Couldn't check Electoral Rolls - those pre 1949 are held at Cardiff Central Library.

However, the original enquiry was to put a name to the cafe - still outstanding. By coincidence, walking back from the Records to the City Centre I found myself on Penarth Rd - but insufficient time to double back and view No 176.

Hope this helps and good luck with the search.

regards

Hello
What a kind person you are, I am so pleased that my dads memories were right and that he did eat ice cream from the churn! (thats where he learned to speak Italian)
By 1935 Nicolas and Maria Esposti had died and Joseph and Lewis his sons had become dock labourers (they were left £195 2s 7d by their father) the rest of the family had obviously moved on. I will keep searching for the shop name but I expect to the records offices it wasn't too important. I shall ask around the family members that I have met since I have been searching.
Thank you so much for all you've done.
Kind regards
Louise Chehdan (Esposti that was!)

Hi there, reading this with interest. I am one of Maria and Howard jones granddaughters. I think Maria was the youngest of the children. I'm assuming that nardini was Maria (who married Nicholas esposti ) maiden name as she was traveling to uk with her sister, a nardini? Nardini is linked to ice cream , I think there's a nardinis ice cream parlour up north? I was wondering if this was where the ice cream connection came from? Any luck with the name of the parlour on penarth road?

Hi Stephen , how wonderful to have photos of the shop, I would be really excited to see them.  Your great grandfather was my great grandmothers oldest brother then? Do you know anything of the name of the coffee shop or the ice cream heritage? Very interested. Hope you find the reply soon !

Hello Stephen I have just seen your post as I have been having another go at finding out more about my Esposti side of the family. Hello again
Thanks for getting in contact. I would love to see any photos of the Esposti/Nardini families. Do you know where abouts they came from in Italy? My dad, Charles, used to say Foggia but I have recently been sent a photo of either Maria's or Nicolas' parents with Castelnuovo written on it assuming that the family couldn't travel too far for a photo I've been looking in this region, without any success.
Anything you would be able to tell me about the family I would LOVE to know. I just wish my dad had wanted to talk more about everyone and that I'd been interested enough to ask the right questions.
Any photos would be great as well. Maybe your great aunty Francis knew my dad. They would have been cousins! I have spoken to my sister and we both seem to remember dad talking about a monkey.

Hi just revisited and seen your posts a year later ! I don't get nofications of them . I thought they had a confectioners shop after they closed the parlour with the 2 youngest boys.  Not sure why I think that now. I too would be interested in any photos especially of the parlour as this quite pertinent to me having found myself in the ice cream trade by accident.  I'd also love to know the region of Italy they came from .  I think I looked at documents from Tuscany (If I remember correctly )for the nardini girls with no success. We were told Nicholas  came from Sicily but I don't think this is correct. Any photos you could share would really be appreciated.  Thank you
