Title: Alderman Herbert Edward ROSE
Post by: Kollies on Monday 14 November 11 09:10 GMT (UK)
My Great Grandfather was an Alderman in Liverpool in the first 1/2 of the 20th Century.  He received and honorary degree from the university of Liverpool in 1942, before passing away in 1943.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I can get hold of a copy of his work records relating to him being an Alderman? Or information relating to the  reason why he was given an honorary degree?

Here are his details:
Name: Herbert Edward Rose
Born: 24/08/1877
Place: Alnwick, Northumberland, England

Married: Florence Wright
Date: 23/06/1903
Place: Seacombe

Death: 19/10/1943
Place: Liverpool, England.

I would suggest contacting Liverpool University or Liverpool Town Hall, they both have web sites.

He's listed in the Liverpool "Red Book" for 1940. See bio below

He was at that time a Labour councillor for Kirkdale ward. As the alderman for that ward he would have been the Returning Officer.

Hi Kollies,

I'm searching my mother's side but just happened upon your post when I googled Major F.E. Rose, I think we are related in some way as Herbert Rose is also my great grandfather! My nana was Cora Rose (daughter of Herbert).  I was wondering what is your link?

Kind regards,

Linda.

I feel there will not be a record of his work in one place  However, he will be mentioned in the Liverpool newspapers, and in the council minutes. It is likely that he would get an lengthy obituary in the papers. I don't agree that he would be a Returning Officer, as these are paid officers of the council. Bob
