Dear all
I know that we're in the week leading up to Christmas, but I am hoping that you can help me. one of my dearest friends is dying and may not see new year (its really sad). She has always wanted to do her family tree, so as a last gift to her, I've offered to do it for her. As I'm also at work leading up to Christmas, I feel that I am running out of time to get as much info to her as possible! I have done some, but wondered if I put some basic details on here, if some of you really kind lovely people would just take a little of your very precious time and see what you can find? I don't mind if I get 10 people find the same thing! My thoughts are, the more people working on this, the more we will find in a short time. I've started on A******y and have found out some of her family. If I give you the details of her parents and grandparents, etc. then I'll leave the rest up to you. The more obscure the findings are the better. What I've managed to show her so far has really cheered her up and has given her something else to focus on. Thank you so much for taking time to read this and to help wherever you can. It means such a lot to me (and her).

Agnes Bertha Clarke was a Governess in 1901 to the Crabtree Family in Worcester
a Governess was not the best job to have as they were expected to do work in the house and look after the children in additon to teaching them so long hours in exchange usually for bed and board.
added:
Governess sometimes didnt know much more than the eldest child in their charge
there was no formal training for them and sometiems they were expected to help out with the household chores, they couldnt socialise with the family or with the staff so they were rather inbetweeners and sometimes with young males in the hosue and an unaccompanied young lady problems arose!

Frederick Cane :
he was christened 23 July 1882 at St Marks Regents Park son of Richard a Mercantile clerk and Emma
their address was 8 Bernard Street
the entry denotes his birth as 22nd May 1882
the 1901 census shows Frederick (19) with his parents Richard (54) and E J (59) and younger siblings Herbert (17) and Louisa (15) at 2 Bridge Road Hampstead
they had 3 servants a governess a cook and a housing domestic
Richard was born just down the road from me in Rype [sic] Ripe Sussex !
Herbet was a student
Frederick was an assitant to his father a Bleaching ? manufacturer
1911 he is with AGnes Bertha as before
i cant spot him on earlier census :-\
Richard & Emma seemed to have had a number of children:
William bp. 20 Aug 1873 Hampstead St Saviour b. Feb 9 1873 Richard is a draper adress 148 Regents park Road
Emma bp. 19 April 1874 Primrose Hill Camden also 9 April 1874 at Hampstead St Saviour b. 29 Jan 184 fathers details as above
Richard bp. 18 April 1875 at both address 7 bernard street, richard father is a commercial traveller
Henry 30 July 1876 Hampstead St Stephen the Martyr deatils as above
Bessie 11 Nov 1877 ditto. 7 bernard street, richard is now a clerk
John 25 May 1879 do. 8 bernard street / clerk
Marchant 27 Feb 1881 St marks Regent Park b. nov 22nd 1880 . 8 bernard street mercantile clerk
Frederick 23 July 1882 ditto. as at top of page
herbert 9 march 1884 ditto. b. 26 Jan 1884 mercantile clerk / 8 bernard street
Louisa 12 July 1885 ditto. b. 29th may 1885 8 bernard street / mercantile clerk
its interesting to see how Richard moved up in the worked from commerical traveller to mercantile clerk and could afford servants and the like
going from 7 bernard street to no. 8 bernard street doesnt mean they moved next door it may mean that another house was built next to number 1 or something thus renumbering the whole street. these days we would just use 1a 1b

Possible death for Alice Mary Clarke (nee Goodhall), for Mar qtr 1888, Hendon 3a 127
Which would then lead to a marriage between George Clarke and Clara Garrett in Jun qtr 1889, Pancras 1b 224
If this is correct, it would mean that Agnes is Alice's daughter rather than Clara's daughter.

Finding a father for George is difficult because it looks as if he was dead/out of the picture by 1851; however as I guess there is no time to get certs to confirm everything, I would hazard a guess that George's father is William Clark aged 25, bn in county and living in Adstock with a 25yr old Jane Clark. On the same page is a Kent family headed up by John Kent aged 38 - related to Jane in someway?

Philadelphia Marchant was christened 21 May 1811 Streat d/o Richard Marchant and Emma
we have her on the 1841 census with her mother Emma
Next door to her brother Richard
Emma then dies in 1843 & Philadelphia Marchant marries John Marchant 31 Jan 1844 at Laughton
then at St Jonhs church in Ripe they had the following children christened
John 7 April 1845
Richard 10 May 1847
Emma 30 March 1849
William 23 Sept 1851
on each entry John Cane was a farmer _ this is confirmed by the census
we have the 1851 census with the extended family members one of whom is Emma Beard so either Emma Cane (is there an Emma Cane) or Emma Marchant marries John Beard
then in1861 John & Philadelphia are in ripe with their children and also Philadelphias sister Elizabeth Dennet Marchant who is unmarried (where does the Dennet name come from?)
we have the 1871 census for John & Philadelphia
i dont seem to have 1881 or 1891
but Philadelphia was buried aged 80 on 28 Jan 1892 at Ripe

William Cane & Ann nee Cruttenden seemed to have 4 children christened in Ripe
Ann 1 Dec 1803 - died 1849 i think
William 16 Aug 1805
Edward 31 July 1807
John 1 Apr 1809
Matthias 25 July 1813
now i found Ann and Edward together but not together on one of the census but i cannot find William or Ann senior so assume they must have died pre 1841 making it difficult to get back further.
a burial that might be of interest is ANn Cane aged 68 years 2 Feb 1837 Ripe St John
i then found a christening of Ann Cruttenden 23 May 1768 also at Ripe to John and Ann
i need someone with an SMI to be able to find the marriage of John Cruttenden and Ann
they had a number of children at Ripe
-

Emmy Brooker was christened 24 Sept 1775 Wivelsfield the daughter of John Brooker and Jane nee Carter who were married in 1763 in Wivelsfield
Her siblings christened at Wivelsfield were :
Thomas 17 March 1765
James 25 Oct 1767
George 16 Sept 1770
Jane 14 March 1773
There is a child christened 10 Jan 1813 in Wivelsfield Emmy Wood Brooker she was illegitimate and her mother is given as Emmy Brooker which has confused me as our Emmy Brooker was by then married to Richard Marchant and living in Streat, however the christening of Emmy Brooker (1775) in Wivelsfield ties in with the age at marriage, 1841 census and burial of Emma Marchant nee Brooker and we also know that her mother is Jane, who by 1795 was a widow. So who is Emmy Wood Brooker b. 1812/1813
Emma Marchant nee Brooker was buried on 31 May 1843 at Streat her residence at the time was Laughton she was aged 67 years
which matches exactly the age (65) and address on the 1841 census where she is living with her daughter Philadelphia next door to her [Emma’s] son Richard.
John Cane married Philadelphia Marchant 31 Jan 1844 Laughton

on each entry John Cane, father was a farmer this is confirmed by the census.

Richard 5 Dec 1795 find marriage / census / death
Eliz Dennet Marchant 29 Sept 1809 find marriage / census / death
Emma 23 Jan 1798 marries John Beard find census / death
Confirm this is our Emma /Emmy
Emmy Brooker was christened 24 Sept 1775 Wivelsfield the daughter of John Brooker and Jane nee Carter who were married in 1763 in Wivelsfield
Her siblings christened at Wivelsfield were :
Thomas 17 March 1765 find marriage / census / death
James 25 Oct 1767 find marriage / census / death
George 16 Sept 1770 find marriage / census / death
Jane 14 March 1773 find marriage / census / death
There is a child christened 10 Jan 1813 in Wivelsfield Emmy Wood Brooker she was illegitimate and her mother is given as Emmy Brooker which has confused me as our Emmy Brooker was by then married to Richard Marchant and living in Streat, however the christening of Emmy Brooker (1775) in Wivelsfield ties in with the age at marriage, 1841 census and burial of Emma Marchant nee Brooker and we also know that her mother is Jane, who by 1795 was a widow. So who is Emmy Wood Brooker b. 1812/1813
John Cane married Philadelphia Marchant 31 Jan 1844 Laughton
Children christened at St Jonhs church in Ripe
John 7 April 1845 find marriage / census / death

Edward Cane m. Julia Cruttenden
1841 Census just Edward (a farmer) & Julia at Ripe both given as aged 30 and BIC
1851 census
1861 census Edward, 53 is at Chalvington a farmer of 200 acres employing several men (maybe 6 or 4) and 8 boys. Also Present is Julia 53 b. Arlington , and children Mary A 19, Margaret 17, William E 16, Alfred 15, Julia (who is transcribed as aged 3 but I am not entirely sure she is it doesn’t match with the 3 in 53, she could be 8) all children b, Chiddingly. They have a house servant Pheobe Mockford and a cowman Henry Parsons living with them.
1871 census Manor Farm, Ripe. Edward Cane still 53! Farmer 200 acres employing 6 men and 8 boys with wife Julia who is also still 53 and children Margaret 27, Julia 18, Alfred 25, Thomas 23, and then George R Bass 15 farmers pupil b. London,
Edward would have got some money for taking in George Bass and teaching him the trade. Leonard Cruttenden widower 67 b. Arlington visitor, Jane Funnell general domestic servant aged 14 b. Chalvington and Charles Deacon aged 19 also a general domestic servant b. Ripe. I know that the census is just 1 night out of 10 years but I feel a bit for Jane Funnell I have a 14 year old daughter now and can’t imagine if she was sent away to live in a big house / farm to do all the domestic chores.
I suspect Leonard Cruttenden is some relation to Julia.
1881 census Ripe Street Ripe, Edward from not aging a year in 10 years has suddenly aged 20 years in 10 and is now aged 73. Edward is no longer a farmer but an assistant overseer etc. with him is wife Julia also 73, daughter Margaret 37, son Thomas 33 a jobbing tailor and youngest daughter Julia 28
1891 census in a private house at Ripe Street Ripe is 83 year old Edward a sanitary inspector now a widower with daughter Margaret 46 a housekeeper presumably the house she lives in and not a housekeeper elsewhere and son Thomas the tailor now aged 43
Julia died just after the 1881 census Q4 1881 aged 74.
Edward died in 1900 aged 92.
There is also another Edward Cane who gives his p.o.b as Ripe and is circa the same age as our Edward he is married to Hannah and I can follow them through the census in fact on the 1841 census they are on the same page as ‘our’ Edward & Julia, I think they must be cousins or something but I cannot find the other Edwards christening in Ripe.
I know that Edward who marries Julia is ours and not Edward who marries Hannah as Edwards fathers name is given as William on the entry on Familysearch.

that is a lot of money :o

Arlington christenings dont appear to be on Familysearch but Julia (Cruttenden) was born there according to the census and so was Leonard within 3 or so years of each other it is my guess they are siblings
not quite sure yet how Leonard & Julia connect to Ann but their father is John, certianly Julias is anyway and Ann had a brother John so maybe Julia is Ann's neice therefore Edward would be her cousin. it was common for cousins to marry cousins and is still legal to do so nowdays.
-
I notice that Ann Cruttendens father was called John without knowing when or where he was born I did search for a John Cruttenden and found one who would be old enough o be ANns father but I didn’t note down the details as I couldn’t prove that he was, however I do remember that his father (on familysearch) was given as Godheard ! this is quite an unusual name and now just thinking about it John Anns brother seemingly had a son Leonard I wonder if Godheard is mistranscribed Leonard and would make it more likely that this John is in fact Anns father and Godheard or Leonard her grandfather and John father of Julia and Leonard Anns brother , I hope I haven’t confused you.

Matthew / Matthias Cane m. Mary Ann Pursglove 1841
1841 same page of census as Edward & Julia at Ripe Matthew aged 27 and Mary aged 25 although Mary is mistranscribed as Henry!
1851 aged 37 with brother John and Philadelphia nee Marchant, no sign or Mary
Cannot find him after that

I suspect that this is the marriage of Charles Goodall to Elizabeth. Elizabeth's surname was used as a middle name for their youngest son Josiah.
12 June 1808, St Marylebone Church, both of this parish.
-
Charles Goodall was buried Mar 29th 1851 - just missing the census when we could find out where he was born! Age given as 65 so a birthdate of 1786.
-
Wow, your friend has an interesting bunch of ancestors - have a look here for info about what Goodall and Sons were making http://www.charlesmathes.com/whist/whist%20counters%20-%20Goodall%20vs%20de%20la%20Rue.htm
And according to the website, Charles Goodall came from Northampton, which leads to me suspect that this is his birth and christening:
bn 4 Dec 1785, ch 29 May 1786, Castle Hill Independent. Parents: William and Frances Goodall.

The Marchant family (except Philadelphia we already have accounted for her bar 1881 /
1891 )
Richard Marchant bp. 5 Dec 1795 married Mary Ann Stuart by licence on 9 July 1828 at Lewes he a bachelor from Streat she a spinster from lewes
i am assuming Mary Ann died pre 1841 as she does not appear on the 1841 census with Richard although relationships and marital status were not given i am again assuming that Richard is with his children (next door to his mother and sister)
s/borough Laughton
Richard Marchant 42 Farmer
Ann 12
Richard 8
Mary 6
Elizabeth 4
All BIC
on the 1851 census, Richard by now 55 is and a farmer of 1.70 acres (at least i think thats what it says, could the 1 be a 4 i guess the dot is actually a comma ?) he has 5 labourers this time is he described as widower and he has the following people living with him:
Richard son 18
Mary dau 15 or 16
Elizabeth dau 14
elizabeth Dennet marchant sister her age has been struck through but we know she was b. 1809 she is an annuitant
as is the next member of her family which is transcribed as Tanner Sarah but the Tanner actually looks like James to me ?? she is listed as Aunt and a widow ages 68. they have 4 servants. its strange because Sarah is the only person with their name written surname first.
by 1861 Richard has moved to Lingfield, St Piers Farm and is a farmer of 231 acres employing 5 men and 1 boy with his son richard aged 28, dau mary 26 and Elizabeth 24. also present is Auntie Sarah who is now listed as Lodger Sarah Jenner aged 79 she is a landholder and of course richard Cane nephew aged 14.
Richard Marchant doesnt appear on the 1871 census and i can only think he must have died. i found his son Richard farming with his sister Mary in Withyham, thier cousin Frederick Springate is also there he is a head gardener. and to keep up the family trend even though there is just the 3 of them they have a young servant girl Emily Sharman just aged 12.
Eliz Dennet marchant 29 Sept 1809 doesnt appear to marry she is in Brighton in 1871 and dies there in 1879 aged 70
Emma bp. 23 Jan 1798 Streat married JOhn Beard from chailey on 21 July 1824
1851 as you know they are with John cane & Philadelphia
1861 1 grass square Alfriston, lives William Banks a master butcher, his wife Mary Elizabeth Banks b. chailey and their children Elizabeth Emma aged 2 and Julia Sarah aged 10 months and Williams mother in law Emma Beard aged 63 b. Streat all others b. Alfriston.
there is a death in 1874 of an Emma Beard which gives her age as 77, possibly your Emma ?
-
i found Philadelphia in 1891
78 High Street East Grinstead
Richard Marchant 58 mar. commercial traveller b. Laughton
philadelphia Cane 79 widow boarder b. Streat
Ann Pollard servant 15
Isabella Sheppard visitor widow 58
Richard would be son of Richard Philadelphia's brother , he is marked as married but no sign of a wife.
-
so Auntie Sarah Jenner how does she fit in ?
she is Auntie to the Marchants so was she Sarah nee Marchant or Sarah nee Brooker i can find no mention of either in the little family groups i listed earlier
her age on the census suggests she was born 1782

Dear all
Thank you so much for your valuable time and the effort you have gone too. I've put some of this together now and passed it onto my friend. Unfortunatly the drugs that they are now having to give her means that she is really confused and can't concentrate on looking at the information. Your work is not in vain, as I am going to put a bit more effort in to make it all nice and pass it onto her son and grandchildren. She is still with us, but the doctors now only predict a few days, another week at most. Thank you for helping me to give a dying lady a glimour of light. You have all been so kind in what you have done. Between us all we have found out quite a lot of information and I hope that one of her grandchildren will be interested enough one day to continue the work.
thanks again
Lisa

Sorry to hear that your friend is in the last stages. I hope that she is peaceful.
I know that you will have a lot on your plate at the moment, but when you do get a chance to look over everything, don't forget to yell if you see something that is missing.
Best wishes to you and your friend and her family.
-
So sorry to hear about your friend.
I think that all of us were only too pleased to help where we could.

i hope it gives your friend some comfort in her last stages to meet all these people in her new family x

Just to let you know that my friend passed away last night. Thank you all once again for your help.

When my wife read your last post, her comment was,
"Lisa's friend may now be able to meet those who she has been looking for all this time".

I've been really touched reading this thread Lisa. That was a good and kind thing you did for your friend, and her family. Bless you, and may she rest in peace.
