Has any of you access to the Madeley Parish Records? I am looking for Michael Price said to have been born there with suggested father William. In 1841 his age is given as 18 which suggests a 1822 birth, later census's suggest 1818.
In 1841 he is living in what looks like Nutt Shell, Madeley, any clues as to where it may have been and if in fact that was the name?

Do you think it could be Nedge Hill ?(sounds similar) which is close to Madeley.

Hi, Michael Price is my Gt Gt Grandfather. I have been searching for him for near on 10 years now but without any luck. I have been to the Shropshire and Shrewsburys history centres and ploughed through so many documents but I am still unable to find him. I have put my family history research on hold for a while as I was hitting a brick wall with Michael and it was driving me nuts! If you notice,he was residing with a couple named Ann Martin and Martin Martin at Nutshell so I am guessing his parents may of been deceased by then or maybe he was born elsewhere and moved to Madeley for work and was lodging with them. Who ever Ann Martin was she must of been a pretty important person in his life as she is a witness on his marriage cert( could be a Aunt or Grandmother perhaps). Maybe we will find him one day....fingers crossed.

Hi again,
On googling Nutshell, Madeley, I came across some ones address for a planning application as
The Nutshell, 53 Hodge Bower, Iron bridge Telford.
Also found a Martin Martin marriage to a Hannah (could be Ann)Jones 31 October 1822, Madeley shrops.
There was also a Martin Martin born 1766 in Madeley and one born in 1833!!!
The only Michael Price I could find born in Shrops at vaguely the right time was one born in CAYNHAM - (near Ludlow) Christened on 13 August 1809. Parents Thomas and Ann Price. Is this too far off the Mark? I know they sometimes didn't know their ages too well! Also there COULD be mistakes on census''s . I had one relative who's age varied over 10 years.
By the way are you sure he was born in Shropshire , not Staffordshire or Montgomeryshire and moved to Shrops?

Hi Jan, I will answer you first.
Many thanks for spending some time on our problem, much appreciated. I think we can now take as read the Nutt Shell address. As for the details of Michael we may never know for sure. In the various census returns he does not seem sure of his exact age and when he dies in 1877 it says 57 which gives a birth date of 1820. In 1841 he is living with the Martin family (Martin and Ann both 75) in Madeley, also there is John Martin age 18, in 1861 in Wednesfield Michael (age 40 born Coalbrookdale) is now at 14, Essington Street, Wednesfield while at number 16 lives John (age 38 born Madeley). Also living there is his father and mother (James and Mary 61 both born Madeley). Presumably in 1841 Michael and John were living with the latter's grandparents. I haven't found Michael in the 1851.
Of interest is that John is still living in Essington Sreet in 1881 and has a Grandson named Martin Martin, proof indeed that the Martins were all related!
The Michael born in Caynham is still alive in 1881 as is the one in Monmouth.
Conclusion is that Michael either lost his parents after he was born or was born illigitimately, possibly by a relation of the Martins.

Pauline, I am sure I saw a post from you on another site and tried to get in touch but my Email bounced back to me?
I live in Nuneaton and the Price family are on my wife's side, her great grandparents were John Cartwright and Fanny Price so as with you her Great Great Grandfather was Michael Price.
Her grandfather married at West Bromwich at the age of sixteen and moved to work in Nuneaton, I have only recently been researching the Price's and was astonished to find that by 1911 John and Fanny also lived here (Nobody in the family knew that!) so the family had come full circle from John and Fanny Golby!!

PS I believe we have a photo of Fanny Cartwright nee Price but not 100% sure as there is no name on ther back.

Ah, perhaps a breakthrough! Just found in Wolverhampton St Peters the marriage of this John Martin to Ann Price on 27th July 1842, father of Ann is J.Price deceased! Ann is 19 and living Wolverhampton, presumably in the Wednesfield area.
When Michael married he gave his father as William Price, a brickmaker but does not say he is deceased.
Anyway there is a connection there between the Martins and the Price's.

Pauline, further to the last two posts the witness to Michael's marriage was Ann Martin, she was previously Ann Price. I would further suggest that the fathers of Michael and Ann were brothers. Loads of Prices and Martins in the Wolverhampton area.
I believe we should be looking in the Wolverhampton/Wednesfield area to get back further, a great site can be found at -

There is a definite connection between there and the Madeley areas, the latter was in the Ironbridge gorge which was the cradle of the industrial revolution in Britain, brickmakers and miners would be in big demand. Either the Price/Martin families went from Wolverhampton to work there or the other way round.

Many thanks for the info. I have always thought that Ann Martin was someone close to him,I did think at one point it may be his mother remarried but never found anything to back that theory up. Your wife's Gt Gran Fanny Price I think would be my Gt Grandfathers sister (but that's without looking at my paper work). My Gt Grandfather was Thomas Henry Price and he was married to Mary Wells and they lived at Barrack St, West Bromwich. Would love to see a picture of Fanny,I have one of my grandfather James If you would like to see that also but have no other pictures of my Price family. I will most certainly look at the link you kindly gave me,thank you. Think I need to start picking up my family history again and try searching for Michael.

Pauline, Thomas was seven years younger than Fanny.
Barrack Street sounds very familiar, will have to look at my notes.

That would be superb Pauline, have only been researching this line for a few short weeks so still a lot of filling in to do.
Looking at the Wolverhampton site it looks as though they did move there from the Madeley area but still have lots to check yet.

Ah, Barrack Street was where John Cartwright lived before he married Fanny Price, number 28.
