Hi there. I have come across a baptism transcript on free reg belonging to my gx4 grandfather Evan Watkin. It states he was baptised on the 9th of June 1816 at St Crallo, Coychurch.
Parents are stated as Evan Watkin (carpenter) and Cecil, and are living at Pencoed.
Cecil went on to marry Lewis Morgan in 1826 in Llanharan and to John Griffiths in 1844 in Peterston. From these I have gathered that Cecil or Cecilia was a Davies before her marriage and her father was Jenkin Davies, and she was born about 1791 at Coychurch.
I have not been able to find any marriage between Evan Watkin and Cecil Davies, or any mention of their baptism/christening. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Joshua.

there's a likely marriage for Evan Watkin & Ceicel David 14-1-1815 at Llangan (I think).
-
Hi, where is Llangan in relation to coychurch? The date seems to fit in, but on her 3rd marriage to John Griffiths, her father is put as Jenkin Davies. Do you think the surnames could have been transcribed incorrectly ?
-
surnames were not settled at that time, the final 's' still comes & goes. I've seen some names differ on 1841, 1851 & 1861 census entries. David & Davies are variations, not different names.
There's a useful map of parishes on Genuki
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Llangan/index.html shows it to be less than 2 miles from Coychurch

Oh right, thanks for that osprey! Cleared it up in my mind anyway, ah right so it is pretty close then. I'll have to bear that in mind about the Davies and David variation too. In that case, it does make it likely that this is the marriage that I could be looking for!

Try Freereg, www.freereg.org.uk
There is a ANN Christened 03 Dec 1776, St Crallo, Coychurch, Glamorgan to JENKIN/MARY David
There is also a JENKIN/JANE having Children also.
This might tie it up;
JENKIN David 18 Jan 1756, St Crallo, Coychurch to ROWLAND/CECIL
+ a Jenkin David 09 Nov 1760 to Rowland/CICIL (1st may have died)
Burial of a Rowland DAVID 18 Jan 1782, no age given
+ a CICIL David 29 January 1782, no age given.
Trish :)
When searching make sure you click on Coychurch (one word) as Coy Church does not access the records I quoted.

There is a Burial of a Evan WATKIN, 04 August 1816, St catwyg, Pentyrch, Glamorgan, Age 26, so birth c 1791
Another at Llangeinor Parish Church, 02 Dec 1815, Age 28
So either way Cecil was pregnant or just gave Birth when Evan died, if these are possibly him.

Thanks! I'll check out all that information now. I've been searching for a will for Jenkin David and I've managed to find it. 1841 in Pencoed, which mentions both Cecil and her son Evan Watkin (being the grandson of Jenkin) so the variation David fits in nicely here.
Plus it mentions other children of Jenkin - Elizabeth (morgan), Richard, William, Jane (leyshon) and Ann (john). There's no wife mentioned so it is safe to say that she had already passed away by this time.
-
Llangeinor would be more likely than Pentyrch, nearer to the parishes mentioned than Pentyrch.

Yes i think the Llangeinor death is more likely, as it's nearer to the Coychurch parish. The next task is now finding a baptism record, so I can try and link back to my Evan Watkin.
-
Well I have had not much luck with following up the Watkin line, so I have instead started to focus us on the David/ies side.
My Jenkin David baptised in Coychurch in 1760 as already has been said, along with his siblings Richard 1745, Anne 1747, Joan 1749, Lewis 1753, another Jenkin 1756, and David 1758, all baptised in Coychurch. The only mention of Rowland David and Cicil are in the baptisms and in their burials in 1782. Could someone point me in the right direction as to where I could start looking next to find out some more information about the Rowland and Cicil? Cheers

Hi I know its been 4yrs since your post but would love to discuss the David family with you my Ann David married Evan Griffith in 1774 at Coychurch. I have had a look through the Coychurch baptisms and have found all the David family members I can unfortunately there are at least 6 Ann Davids who are born but Rowland & Cecil parents of Ann b. 1747 looks like a match. My Ann and Evan had 5 children Catharine, Lewis, Evan, Jenkin and Cecil. the names of the children seem to link closely to Rowland and Cecil, Cecil is obvious but then Lewis & Jenkin match Ann's brothers. I wonder then if our families are related. I have some info on Rowland too I believe he was born at Elgwysilan circa 1722 son of Morgan. I believe all the David's I have found in Coychurch are all related whether siblings or cousins etc. just having a hard time linking them all together. Would love to discuss

Hi Maclemett!
I have not managed to find any further information about Rowland and Cecil (the parents), so I would be very grateful for any information you could share. I had found the Eglwysilan baptism like you, but was not sure as I could not find any further information to connect to our Rowland. I had also found a potential brother for the Rowland born at Eglwysilan (William baptised 1730). What are your thoughts?
-
Hey mate thanks for the reply
I think definitely all the David family in Coychurch are some how related it's just fitting them all together I'm going to try and make a family tree for them. It seems there were a total of around 20 David members having children in Coychurch including a William possibly his brother. The only baptism for Rowland I can find is in Eglwysilan there was also a Morgan David who had children in Coychurch around the same time as Rowland I have found a baptism for Morgan (father Edward) also in Egwlysilan so it seems plausible they were from Eglwysilan. You also mentioned a will for Jenkins David does he mention any siblings nieces or nephews in it at all?
-
Hi,
I will have a closer look at the different David branches - two pairs of eyes will be better than one. So potentially Rowland and Morgan were cousins who both hailed from Eglwysilan?
With Jenkin's will, there is only mention of his children and no extended family mentioned.
-
Hey just seen your message
Two eyes are definitely better than one I had a quick look over the baptisms it seems Edward (Morgan's father) and Morgan (Rowlands father) were 2nd cousins both grandsons of Jenkin David of Swansea it seems the family may have hailed from Swansea moved to egwlysilan maybe for work and then to coychurch where their wives were from its only a theory for now but seems to work out. However I do know from court papers that a jenkin David was living at coychurch in 1622 so it seems the David family do have strong links there. the court paper mentions Coity Manor. Still a way to go but the answer is definitely there some where. Just out of curiosity where do you live at the moment as I am within travelling distance to coychurch. Best wishes
