Title: Joyce/Twelvetree
Post by: MattH on Friday 10 February 12 22:06 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I am researching my English ancestors and came across a person that I would like to see if anyone might have any information about her birth. The name is Sarah Twelvetree. She was married to James Joyce in Eaton Socon on 6 November 1805. I know James was baptized on 19 June 1774 in Eaton Socon and that his parents were Thomas Joyce and Edith Ford. Unfortunately, I can't crack anything regarding Sarah Twelvetree(s). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

The Eaton Socon marriage of 6 Nov 1805 from the PR transcript says James Joyce widower of ES to Sarah Twelvetree(s) of Kimbolton, spinster.

There is a burial on 29/09/1802 of James, son of James & Ann Joyce

But I could not see a previous marriage for James to Ann, or a burial for Ann.

However the IGI has 3 member submitted marriage entries on 17 Nov 1797 of JJ to Ann Collin at nearby Colmworth - need to check the Colmworth PR.
Also the NBI has burial of Ann Joyce at Colmworth St Denys on 18 Oct 1803.

Regards
John

Thanks, John, for the information. I wonder who this ES was that James was married to before he married Sarah. Also, just for clarification, Sarah was from Kimbolton in Cambridge, right? I looked on Google maps, which had that Kimbolton about eight miles from Eaton Socon. That would make the most sense to me, but you never know... Also, I'm unaware of the acronyms you're using. I know of the IGI, but what's PR and NBI?
Again, thanks for your help and look forward hearing again from you.

Hello Matth

'widower of ES' = he was of Eaton Socon !

PR = Parish Records

NBI = National Burial index

Kimbolton was in the old county of Huntingdonshire at the time of this marriage; it is now in Cambridgeshire

John,
Thanks again for the clarification. So would you suggest my looking at the Huntingdonshire forum for help regarding the Twelvetree line or is it something you're able to do here?

Matt

Ideally start a new thread on the Hunts board, but it may not be too fruitful.

There are no Twelvetree marriages in Kimbolton, nor any burials, which implies to me that if Sarah was born there it was only a fleeting visit. The other option is that she wasn't born there but was simply residing in that parish when she married in Eaton Socon.

Kimbolton parish register has been filmed by the LDS so is available to order from and view at your nearest LDS Family History Centre.

What else do you know about her? Burial or appearance in any census?

David

A member submission suggested that Sarah Twelvetrees was born in Newton, Nothants. Could this be Newton Bromswold, where a Sarah Tweltree was baptised 15/05/1774, daughter of William & Elizabeth

There are a number of Ancestry trees with her on them. One of her children appears to have emigrated to Utah, hence the American interest. The only source I can find is another Ancestry tree!

Thanks, you two, for your help. Unfortunately, I have no other certain information that would be of help. I have seen information that says that she was born in Nottingham and died there as well. However, for some reason, it just doesn't seem right. I certainly don't believe that she moved to Utah. Her sons, Thomas and John Joyce, did immigrate in 1855. However, I have yet to find any concrete evidence to suggest that she did immigrate. I have also searched the 1841 UK Census without any success. I did find some Joyces that were from Kimbolton, but they did not match my ancestor.
This may become a dead end for this line unless some definite information should arise. Do either of you have any advice?

Colmworth transcript has the 1797 marriage as stated, but there's no other detail

The Ann Joyce burial states wife of James of Eaton Socon. There also a burial on 12 Nov 1803 of Mary Joyce dau of James and Ann of Eaton Socon

Hi Matt, I am undertaking a one-name study for Twelftreee/Twelvetree(s) and am a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies. I have a vast amount of information about people with these surnames and may be able to help you. The name can be traced back to Huntingdonshire and Northamptonshire in the mid 1600's but I have yet to find out exactly where it originated. The family in both counties were carpenters. Have you any further information on the couple in question?
