Post by: bykerlads on Saturday 24 March 12 19:57 GMT (UK)
Otto Battye was born in Yorkshire Uk, parents Joe Battye+ Harriet nee Bottomley.
( Harriet was the half-sister of my grtgrandmother)
The Battye's emigrated to Lawrence in the 1890's.
Otto married and had 1 child, as far as I know.
Any info about Otto and the Battye's will be much appreciated.

Hi bykerlads,

Otto seems to appear in City Directories for Lawrence up until 1960.

Don't know if you have come across his WW1 and 2 drafts.

WW1 Draft - Otto  Batty. 3 rd August 1894 Wilshire. Yorkshire. England.. Resides 10 Woodland. Lawrence. Mass. Naturalized citizen. Married with a wife and child. Occupation:- Carding. Arlington Mill.

Person who will always know him :- Mrs Harriet Bottomley Battye of the same address.

Thanks Sandra.
Do you think the fact that he gave his mother as "the person who would know him" means his wife and child were dead?or perhaps estranged?

Perhaps the 1940 Census due to be issued early next week may give a few answers.  Lots of IFS !! It doesn't look as if Otto and Ella are together at sometime after 1920  ???

We know that the daughter Gertrude was married 21 st August 1937 to Joseph Harold Mahoney in New Hampshire.
Yet there is an entry is Salem. Massachusetts in 1939/40 for a Gertrude W Battye. Occupation:- Mounting Department. Hytron Corp.  r 2 Ober  ???  Not sure if this is your Gertrude who has reverted to her maiden name or another.  ???
The mothers name is given as Elizabeth Adams - so is Winifred E Battye or Ella - the same person  ???

There are several entries in City Directories for Winifred E Battye from 1939 - 1964

Ella W Battye is also in a Lawrence City Directory in 1916/1917 and 1920 with Otto. 1916/1917/1920 at 10 Woodland

There is a death record for Winifred Battye born 1889, the one with Otto on the 1920 Census was born  1885  ??? (so a few years out)

Winifred E Battye. Born 24 January 1889 Other Country and died 20 th June 1981 Beverly. Massachusetts - Certificate: 033627

1930 shows a Nellie and Gertude together in Peabody, Essex, Massachusetts. Is this Ella Winifred  (Age slightly out) ???

George Locke 59
Nellie Battye 38 Born England. Married at 24 years. Housekeeper to private family. Immigrated unknown.
Gertrude Battye 13 Born Massachusetts

The 1920 shows Otto with Winifred and Gertrude in Lawrence Ward 1, Essex, Massachusetts. Just describes all 3 Battye family as boarders. Winifred 10 years older, perhaps that is an error  ???

Eva Walsh 47 Born England. Head.
Otto Battye 25 Born England. Boarder. Gas Mech. Gas Co.
Winifred Battye 35 Born England. Boarder. Baiter. Carpet Mill.
Gertrude W Battye 2 Born Massachusetts. Boarder

1920  Lawrence City Directory entry gives Otto with spouse Ella at h 10 Woodland - opr -
and Joseph and Harriet are just below - lab - h 34 Holly

The next entry is City Directory Lawrence 1933/1939 - Battye Harriet wid of Jos h 151 Willow
                                    -  Otto  card rm r 151 Willow

1944/45 entries have - Harriett wid of Jos h 39 Montgomery
                             - Otto opr Arl  e 39 Montgomery

1949 No sign of Harriet -  Otto  r 201 Essex

In further directories Otto moves around - 1954/55 at16 Tremont  1958/59/60 at 21 Marston

I think this is the Joseph H Mahoney who the daughter Gertrude married in 1937.
Family living in Peabody, Essex, Massachusetts in 1930. Cooincidentally where some of those city directory entries say Winifred E Battye lived 1939 - 1964

Thanks for taking the trouble to provide so much information, Sandra- it really adds to the picture.
I'm interested to note that the 1940 census is due to be published- where will this be viewable?
I think it will be very useful to track both the Battyes and my closer relative Fred Mellor, the nephew of Otto's mother. I'm sure Fred emigrated to the US with encouragement of Otto's father Joe Battye- they all came from the same West Yorkshire village.
(in fact Joe seems to have crossed and re-crossed the Atlantic many times in the early 20thC, I feel he must have been some sort of unofficial recruiter of labour. Otto just happened to be born back in the old country when his mother had returned there for some reason after emigrating to USA)
