Looking for leads on the following:
Patrick McCarthy - born c.1893 in above area
Michael McCarthy - Patricks father
Both were in Gortroache, Ballyhooly early 1920's - Patrick married Nora Shanahan of Castletownroche (i think), she was born c.1897 and was in Ballyhooly in 1911 with the mother Ellen Shanahan (Nora was under the name of Dwane though).
Any help with the Shanahans/Dwanes from late 1800's in Castletownroche would be appreciated as well.

Hi, I think you need to have a look at your information again as there is
Patrick McCarthy Gortroche Ballyhooly in 1901 census SINGLE age 23yrs Farmer
Patrick McCarthy Gortroche Ballyhooly in 1911 census SINGLE age 33yrs Farmer
Cant be your Patrick Born 1893 as stated
There is a Birth registration in FERMOY DISTRICT for a Patrick McCarthy in 1894.
Do you know Patricks mother name?
Ref NORA SHANAHAN. b. c 1897.
In 1911 Census Nora Shanahan is in a Residential (probably a school)
Age 15yrs.
The Nora Dwane you mentioned living with Ellen Shanahan is her GRANDAUGHTER - not her daughter.
I think, if you have any more information, you will need to take a look again, as the dates dont fit in.
Regards Frances

thanks a million for the quick reply!
Seen the two Patricks in 1901 and 1911 census and they are too old - just wandering if he was living elsewhere and moved there after 1911 - must be the case. The 1894 birth - is the father Michael?
I meant grandaughter (!).
Thanks again for your help.

This is puzzling me. What is birth surname of Nora who was born c. 1897? Do you know where she is on the 1901 census? Have you got a marriage cert for Nora and Patrick McCarthy? Assume that you don't know where the McCarthys were from originally? Sorry for all the questions - I'm just trying to understand what you know for sure about them.

Nora was born in 1897 in Castletownroche under name of Shanahan. She is in Ballyhooly in 1901 and 1911 census under the name of Dwan. I have the birth certificate (although only from the Cork genealogy website). It is rumoured that she was born from a relationship between Julia Shanahan and a farm worker called Dwan. Her mother Ellen Shanahan named herself as mother on the birth certificate to stop any rumours, although she called her a Dwan afterwards.
The McCarthy situation is less clear cut, cannot proceed until i have confirmed what county Patrick was born in (1926 census should tell me this), as i cannot confirm which Patrick is the real one in both 1901 and 1911 census. His full name is Patrick Joseph - i have found some but they cover Waterford (x1), Tipperary (x1), Limerick (x1) and Cork (x1) for births in 1893 ish. So without this i cannot trace much further back.
His wedding certificate to Nora states his father as Michael but the only Patrick Joseph McCarthy born in1893 in Cork had a father called John - don't know if this is the same (they used to swap middle and first names a lot to suit in those days i believe).
Confused now??!

Thanks, I'm with you now! Someone will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong but I think that from the early 20th century details of marriages were added to baptism registers. So you could try the parish where Nora was baptised and ask to see her baptism entry. Also the church marriage record for their wedding to see if it helps.
I don't know what you mean by the Cork genealogy website?
I wouldn't be waiting on the 1926 census; it could be a long wait! I don't think you should limit your searches to births registered as Patrick Joseph as you couldn't be sure that the middle name would be registered. I think start with Nora when you know about her for sure.

I thought the 1926 census was to be released this year??

According to this the Government has approved the 1926 for publication but 2016 is given as the hoped for publication date http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/1926-census.html

I have also found records for Nora Dwane. Born about 1897, lived with her grandmother, as stated, but she married a Thomas Irwin, in 1930 and had five children.
