I have been researching the family of Robert Cooper (born London 1777) for 10 years now. But have come to a dead end - at the point prior to his transportation. Robert Cooper owned the White Swan Hotel, know locally as Paddy's Goose, in Shadwell, in the late 1700's into the early 1800's. The family also owned a distillery around the corner in Juniper Street, Stepney (Shadwell?). The White Swan became in the late 1800's one of the most notorious pubs in London, I believe after the hotel left the Cooper family. Robert Cooper was convicted of receiving stolen goods and was transported to Sydney in 1813.
I am very interested in any information from folk who know of the White Swan or the distillery. Robert Cooper had five children, left behind with their mother Mary Ann. On her death (?) the children followed their father. From court proceedings in the old Bailey, I suspect that the family ran a almshouse in the Stepney area as well, as he was very concerned about leaving his children and what appears to be another "extended family". I would really welcome any information on possible siblings of Robert who remained behind ???. Robert's parents were Robert and Eliza.

WHITE SWAN
20 Whitechapel High Street
Located on the southern side towards the Aldgate end, at the corner with White Swan Yard. (This was close to the corner of Leman Street).
The pub does not exist today.
In 1888 the landlord was a Frederick Davis.

Thanks Annie for your suggestions. I'll definitely look at these sites. The White Swan Hotel you suggested is not the one I am looking into. But thanks anyhow. The hotel that was in our family was near the corner of The Highway and King David Lane in Shadwell (or is it Stepney?). The hotel lost it's license early 1900's and became the Paddy's Goose Sporting Club. It was then pulled down after WW2 and made way for a school and a housing estate. Nothing online, but this is in a book 'Limehouse Days' by Daniel Farson (Michael Joseph, London 1991), p.81:-
With so many ships entering the port, it was inevitable that the sailors who poured ashore in the last century - and were frequently decanted back unconscious - added to the district's character. Many of them headed for the White Swan in ratcliff, known locally as Paddy's Goose, described by the American writer, Daniel Kirwan, as 'perhaps the most frightful hell-hole in London'. Kirwan found no honest merriment:
The very submimity of vice and degradation is here attained, and the noisy scraping of wheezy fiddle and the brawls of intoxicated sailors are the only sounds heard within its walls. It is an ordinary dance house, with a bar and glasses, and a dirty floor on which scores of women of all countries and shades of colour can be found dancing with Danes, Americans, Swedes, Spaniards, Russian, Negroes, Chinese, Malays, Italians and Portuguese in one hell-medley of abomination.
I don't think he liked it much ;)

Just wondering whether you found what you were after on Robert Cooper and Paddy's Goose?
I have quite a bit of information on Robert Cooper, most importantly that his parents weren't Robert and Eliza as we all supposed, but in fact were Francis Cooper and Frances Pilkington. Let me know if you want more info.

What is the connection /interest in Robert Cooper. He is my 4x Great Grandfather, through the first marriage he had. Thanks for the clarification on his parents. I too had thought they were Eliza and Roberts.

Hi Michael, Robert Cooper was also my 4th gr grandfather. His first child, Mary Ann, was my 3rd gr grandmother; her daughter Louisa Mary Heaney my 2nd gr grandmother; Louisa's daughter, Elizabeth Emma Lipson-Sommers my 1st gr grandmother and her daughter, Maude Mary Fuller. As mentioned I have a quite a bit of info on Robert and his parents and am happy to share. If you would like to know more, let me know how to get it to you. I haven't attached files on Rootschat before so not sure how reliable it is or who actually gets the information.

The link for me is Robert, his son Francis, then his son Pope, his son Reginald, his daughter Alice was my grandmother. (All Coopers) Alice's married name was, of course, Bishop.
