Hello
Does anyone have any bright ideas finding a birth in about 1690-1700?
I have checked OPC, IGI and even checked the parish records at lunchtime. I know he existed because I have a wedding & even a death for him. I have no reason to think his family were non conformist and obviously without his baptism I can't find his father. Has anyone else had the same problem and solved it?

I've had this problem. If the child wasn't baptised, there doesn't seem to be a record of them. Apparently all the children in one family were baptised apart from my 2 x g.grandfather and that was in 1834. I've seen for myself the parish records and searched backwards and forwards in case I'd missed the entry, but it's not there. The supposition is that my 2 x g.grandfather was probably the illegitimate son of the eldest daughter who died in 1837, but who knows?
My guess is if there is no baptism record (and you are sure they were not non conformists) then the child may have been illegitimate. Were siblings baptised? If you can't find any at all, it could be that they were baptised in a different village.

Thanks Lizzie
Funny you should say that, as I can't find any others either and I can't find a marriage for likely parents. Well, looks like my next search is all areas around and about. But everything tells me they were in the same area for generations. I have them going back to 1500's except for this one/two generations. As it is an unusual name I can be quite positive they are all related. Never mind I will keep on searching.
Many thanks

Hello John
Christopher Strange born 1690's? Married 1716 to Mary Green and died 1737. I am trying to find his father and mother. They lived in township of Westleigh, Leigh, Lancs. As I said I have looked on OPC, IGI and looked at the parish records but I can't find a birth. Any help much appreciated.

Have you checked both PR's and BT's? I am unfamiliar with Lancashire towns and villages, but what sort of place was/is Westleigh? If it was a small village, it is possible that children may have not been baptised at all, or at a later date, if there was an "absent" minister. Have you checked in and around his marriage date?
One last thought, given the era, I would be checking further back than 1690ish for a baptism.

Hi Pinefamily
Tried PRs but not BTs. I will check that one out, although they are usually recorded on OPCs. You may be right, he just wasn't baptized or the records could be missing. Westleigh was an area within Leigh and at that time all BMDs were usually, not always, conducted in our parish church, which still stands today and I pass every day. I have checked the surrounding areas too but to no avail. Never mind I shall carry on looking. Tantalizingly a will for another Christopher Strange, Westleigh, which could possibly be his father is missing from the Lancashire record office. That could have answered a few questions!
