Title: John Henderson - Cullercoats *COMPLETED*
Post by: Craclyn on Monday 09 July 12 14:52 BST (UK)
I am struggling to find a birth/baptism and marriage records for my 3x great grandfather John Henderson.

From census information and his death certificate I know he was born in Cullercoats ca 1811 and believe he was married to Harriet Miller Newton. First child born 1834, so marriage probably early 1830s. Father-in-law William Newton living with them in 1851 and Newton is later used as a Christian name in the family, so I am hoping I have the right Harriet, but have not found a marriage record.

Children were John 1834, Archbold 1836, Elizabeth ca 1841, James ca 1843, Jane ca 1844, Henry ca 1847. The first 4 were born in Cullercoats, the last 2 in Amble. John sr drowned at Lesbury in 1874.

Any help to pin down John's birth would be much appreciated to help break down the next brick wall, and a marriage record for John and Harriet would make me feel much more comfortable that I have identified the right wife.

You were probably thinking Northumberland for the marriage.  They had visions further south........24 Apr 1833 South Shields St. Hilda  John Henderson and Harriet Newton.

Harriot Miller Newton was baptised 24 July 1814 d/o William and Elizabeth

Earlier siblings [there are several] that will give you information:  Elizabeth Juliet Newton born31 Jan 1809, baptised 6 May 1810 4th daur of William Newton of Whitley, Mariner [also two child as occupation Mason] native of Shilbottle by his wife Elizabeth Miller native of this parish.

Thanks Janis. Brilliant bit of research.  Just goes to show how easily you can get in the wrong rut. I was concentrating on north of the river :) Silly me. Should have known to look further afield. Amazing what a fresh pair of eyes can do.

Many thanks

Thanks again Janis. I had found Harriet's baptism and a couple of the other Newton children, Sarah and Mary.
Hadn't realised William was from Shilbottle though, so that gives me some new leads.

Following your info on John and Harriet's marriage I have now found the record in the Bishops' Transcripts. Witnesses were William Newton and Mary Newton, so those names add to confirmation that I have the right family.

Unfortunately no Hendersons mentioned as witnesses so I am still fumbling around looking for more information about John's birth and his parents and siblings.

I found a John Henderson in Tynemouth baptisms but born 1808.

I haven't ruled that one out completely, but am still trying to find one around 1811. My John's death cert in 1874 shows him to be 63 and since he has been fairly consistent on census returns too I have no indication yet that his birth may have been three years earlier. However, if some of my other ancestors are anything to go by, then 1811 could be way out and the 1808 baptism may be right :)
Title: Re: John Henderson - Cullercoats (or maybe S. Shields)

I have now followed the St Hilda, South Shields lead further and found a possible baptism for my John Henderson. Baptism 28 Apr 1811. DoB 26 Oct 1810. Name John C. Henderson. Parents Henry Henderson, mariner and Jane Charlton.
Being seafaring folks fits.
My John has named his two youngest children Henry and Jane, which is another plus point.
Most compelling piece of evidence here is that one of John's great grandsons was Thomas Charlton Henderson and I have been wondering where the Charlton name came from. Not from any of the other women I can see in his ancestry, so this may well be the explanation.

I am now going to look for contradictory evidence to disprove the theory that John C. Henderson is the one I am looking for before I claim him for my tree, so if any of you know anything about a John Charlton Henderson born in 1810, baptised 1811 in South Shields I would be pleased to hear from you.

Back to square one. Found contradictory evidence. John Charlton Henderson died in S. Shields in 1863. So I am still looking for a John Henderson somewhere around Cullercoats about 1811.

Two years after the original post I have now resolved this issue. John Henderson was not from Cullercoats after all. Further review of censuses gave an alternative place of birth as Haydon Bridge and date 1811, which created a further problem as there were no baptisms that matched. I have finally today tracked down a baptism at Kirkwhelpington in 1813 with an annotation in the margin saying he was born at Haydon Bridge in 1811. Extremely lucky to have a vicar who wrote more than absolutely necessary in the register, otherwise I would never have been certain I had the right man.
