Title: Charles families
Post by: glove on Wednesday 11 July 12 23:55 BST (UK)
Hi Fellow Researchers,
I am particularly interested in Andrew Charles who married an unknown Hession (or Hessin) and they had one known son William, born abt 1809. This William married a Jane, last name unknown born abt 1811 and died 1890. A search of the Irish Wills Calendar showed that William and Jane had the following children: Andrew, Richard, John, William, Samuel, Jane, Eliza and Mary Ann. Whilst I have uncovered information about Andrew, Richard, William, Jane and Mary Ann, I am still trying to find information about John and Samuel, Eliza and Andrew and his wife ? Hession.
Hoping someone can help.
Cheers!...........Jenny

The two surname possibilities for your unknown are interesting.

Hession is almost exclusively a  Galway / Mayo name. In the 1901 census, 95% of the 736 Hessions in the 32 counties came from Galway or Mayo with Galway having almost 4 times as many as Mayo at 548.

Hasson on the other hand is a name that is almost exclusive to Derry / Londonderry. The name recorded as Hessin, Hasson, Hassen or Hassin shows that 90% of 264 enumerated in the 1901 census were from Co. Derry.

In the case of the Hessin name, Desertmartin would appear to be the area that they originated although only 9 individuals were noted in the 1901 census.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bannerman

I had a suspicion that the name would be Hessin, as Andrew Charles born abt 1833 and died 1910 (son of William and Jane) lived in England and had a business named T Hessin & Co. This Andrew also named one of his sons Thomas Hessin Charles. I should also mention that Destermartin was area named in Jane's will.

Once again thanks.

Cheers!...........Jenny

The Belfast Newsletter in 1894 reports a Lilla Jane Charles marrying a John H Clayton, she is described as a granddaughter of William Charles from Desertmartin, is this one of yours?

Hi gafy,

Yes, she certainly is. Lilla Jane is William senior's granddaughter. Her father was Andrew born abt 1833.  She was born in Edgbaston, England in 1867. Thank you so much for your information. It is much appreciated.

Cheers!...........Jenny

Hi
I have just come across this thread. My name is David Charles and I’m originally from Desertmartin. My father, grandfather and great grandfather are all from desertmartin and I suspect relatives before that. My granny, violet Charles, died at the age of 97 last month and I’m keen to find out my Charles family tree in desertmartin. Can anybody help?
Thanks
David

Welcome to RootsChat David.
There are lots of people here to help but you would need to give a bit more information.
It the policy on RootsChat not to name living people.
If they have both passed the usual first step would be to find your grandparents marriage to get their father's names.
If you already know their parents names that finding your grandparents births for their mothers maiden names and so on.
So the first thing to do is speak to your own parents to learn what they know.

Thank you for this. I have done some research over the last month and I am related back to through my great grandfather Robert Charles (1891 -1988) right back to Jane Charles (1810 - 1890) and her husband William Charles (1809 -1879). My research didn’t pick up on Andrew Charles and a Hessin moving to England as per the above thread. I’m really keen to explore this if there is anybody that can help me. Thanks

There's a Will somewhere.... it might give clues as to where he lived or married

I wonder if it is possible to get in contact with the individual called glove / Jenny in the thread? It appears she has a comprehensive knowledge of the Charles family especially Andrew and Hessin
