Hi
I am trying to trace my friends great grandfather Frederick James Crawford who was born c1890 according to his wedding certificate. He is shown as a Sergeant in The Cameron Highlanders and his father was a William Frederick
Crawford occupation Book Edge Guilder.
Unfortunately I know very little about Scottish Genealogy and although I tried to look on the Scotlands people site I did not have much success. I know he was not born in England.
Any help or advice would be most appreciated.
Thank You
David ;)

Hi David
Can't see anything for him in Scotland. Why don't you think he was born in England?
There is this entry in 1891 in Tottenham, Edmonton:
Wm Crawford 37
Maria Crawford 26
Willm F Crawford 8
Ed George Crawford 6
Maria O Crawford 4
Fredric J Crawford 2
RG12-1070-60-39
Father's occupation, a book binder, guilder ? See below:

I think it may be the right entry for Frederick's family :)
There is a marriage showing for a William Crawford, son of Edward, both with the occupation of book edge guilders. He married at the age of 25 a Maria James, 18, daughter of Frederick James, a watchman. The marriage took place on 30 July 1881 at St Barnabas Church, Parish of St Luke, Middlesex.

Hi Monica
This family seem to be nomads, I looked at William's marriage and saw his father was Edward Crawford and Ancestry shows an Edward Crawford marrying a Susan Mailing c1852, but no trace in the Free BMD, however they were in Glasgow in the 1861, no trace in 1871 but 1881 are in Gatehsead, where the father was an unemployed Book edge Guilder like his son, they then seem to have moved back to London, bcause Edward is shown as a Pauper in Mitcham Surrey.
I wonder if you could advise me if there is a marriage in Scotland for Edward Crawfod & Susan Mailing. Edward was baptised in St Lukes London in 1823, so I dont quite understand the journeying between London, Glasgow and Gatehead. As matter of confirmation, Frederick's sister Maria got married in Gateshead also in 1913.
Many thanks
David ;)

David...you are in luck ;)
I cannot easily see the marriage in Scotland pre 1855 and the start of official registration in Scotland, however, they look to have been in Scotland in 1855 for the birth of one of their children. 1855 are a lucky first year for registrations. For this year only, entries on statutory registers ran over two pages of the registers.
For births it should include: age and birth place of parents, when they married, how many children they'd had (alive/deceased, boy/girl).
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQDY-2BZ - the 1855 one
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQJD-JL1
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQJD-JL1 - by the early 1860s, marriage details for parents began to be included again. You get more info though from viewing the 1855 entry.
You can view all of these images directly online on the official pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Costs are reasonable. You can search/view up to 5 images online and save/back up on your computer for £7GB.

Hi Monica
I found these images this morning on Familysearch, but did not know that the 1855 should show marriage detais. Edward was baptised in 1823 and I have found his parents marriage, his athers baptism and his parenst marriage all in St Lukes in London.
Intersetingly William was born in London in 1853, so I would have thought that Edward & Susan should have married there but no sign at all.
Many thanks for all your help

...they were in Glasgow in the 1861, no trace in 1871 but 1881 are in Gatehsead..
Not sure where Edward or William were for 1871 but likely entry for the rest of the family I think in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire:
George Winters 55
Mary Winters 60 b. Melbourn, Cambridgeshire
George Winters 15
Young Winters (transcription wrong, reads as Malling) 85, Father-in-law b. Shepreth, Cambridgeshire
Susan Crawford 50, Sister-in-law b. Shepreth, Cambridgeshire
Charlotte Crawford 15 b. Glasgow
Frederick Crawford 8 b. Glasgow

Somebody has added this to their tree on the family. Noted from Court Records
23 Jul 1808 in Cambridgeshire. Likely Susan's father given the name?
Susan's entry here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5GB-F55
