Hi

Just noticed that you've popped up in Scotland  :)

Samuel Rodger* Fitzgerald, aged 65, died St Andrews and St Leonards in 1890

This is showing on the Scotlands People site. Information about his parents would be given on the death cert which you can purchase and download from the site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It's very reasonable - 6 credits

* wrongly indexed - it's Richard

We have been told there was a link between our Oswestry Fitzgeralds and Lord Edward Fitzgerald.  Also, that four or five uncles were behedded :(  Silken Thomas Fitzgerald???

I've been looking for a marriage between Samuel and Josephine Nevill* but so far I can't see one in Eng & Wales (I think the site I use also includes overseas) , Scotland or Ireland  :-\

I might have missed something but it's very odd!

It might be that you have to trace William Fitzgerald (b.c. 1799) further. They must have all originated in Ireland at some stage as Fitzgerald is an Irish surname.

Absolutely!  We have been looking for William senior's ancestors for years!  This is why we were really interested when we found this.  Could there be a connection...there are so many Fitzgeralds so who knows!!!  We can't find a birth record for him, it's like he just appeared! William named his first son Samuel, and another son Richard who sadly died , and so far this is the first line we have found with both these names in it from a scottish line.   *sigh*

Hi Joe
I am interested in Josephine FitzGerald because in 1901 she was appointed guardian of an orphan that I have been researching for many years.  In the 1901 census she was living at 31 The Close, Salisbury. In 1911 she is listed in the household of her sister at 28 The Close.  She died on 2/11/1926, when her address was 52 The Close.  I'll email you her will and further details if you wish.
regards
Simon

Hi Will, I have some bits and pieces, what's your interest?, regards Simon

Hey Simon, thanks. I'm interested in the adoption of Dorothy by Josephine. Are there any adoption records, who was Dorothy's mother, was there any guardian other than Josephine?

Also, any sign of a birth certificate?

So many questions, it's a real mystery.

Cheers

Will

Dorothy's 'adoption' predates official adoption in England so unless it was a legal arrangement done through a solicitor there probably won't be any paperwork.

Josephine's Will may provide provision or further details for Dorothy-
926 Fitzgerald Josephine of 52 The Close Salisbury widow died 2 November 1926 Probate Salisbury 4 December to Helen Nevill spinster and James Algernon Brown barrister-at-law. Effects £7489 8s.

Josephine's sister died 1929-
1929 Nevill Helen of 52 The Close Salisbury spinster died 6 January 1929 Probate Winchester 21 February to James Algernon Brown barrister-at-law and Gordon Tysen Legg retired ship owner. Effects £6002 11s 10d. Resworn £9345 17s 5d.

I'm also researching Josephine Fitzgerald because of a Neville/Nevill family connection but I'm fascinated by her relationship with Dorothy Lawrence.

I believe she didn't leave her anything in her will, but I've found a photo of them together and a mention of her in a letter so at some point in 1914-1919 I believe they were close and that Josephine typically used 'foster' daughters. I can't pinpoint when Dorothy was 'fostered' though?

I'd be keen to know especially as it looks like Dorothy accused Josephine's husband of abuse - though by the dates provided he was only her husband for 2 years between 1888-1890 when Dorothy was only 1-2 years old? I suspect that that allegation might have been against someone else that Dorothy was staying with at the time, but if anyone has any evidence of Dorothy and Josephine's time together or a reason for their rift at Josephine's end-of-life I'd appreciate it.
