Title: MORRIS family of Nether Seal
Post by: hayesstw on Saturday 15 September 12 05:54 BST (UK)
I recently found the following baptisms on FamilySearch, in the parish of Nether Seal.

I believe they are probably the same family

Children of Thomas Morris & Sarah at (Nether) Seal
Thomas baptised 25 May 1806
William baptised 23 Oct 1808
Sarah baptised 14 Feb 1813
Elizabeth baptised 7 Sep 1815
James baptised 8 Aug 1817
Frances baptised 27 Aug 1820
Catherine baptised 1 Dec 1822

If this is correct, then four of the children, Thomas, William, James and Frances emigrated to the Cape Colony. It seems that Thomas and William emigrated first, and later invited their siblings to join them. James apparently emigrated about 1834, when he was 17, and married Mary Huskisson in Cape Town. Frances married Francis Stewardson and lived in what is now Namibia.

I would be interested in knowing about the antecedents of this family and where and when the parents, Thomas and Sarah, married, and what happened to the other children, Sarah, Elizabeth and Catherine, and if anyone else is researching this family.

There is a better index of baptisms on this site, which gives the abode of Thomas (a butcher) and Sarah as Donisthorpe,.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brett/seal/

It has marriage index also but no Thomas and Sarah.

Netherseal is now in Derbyshire and so it might be worth posting the message there.

The nearest marriage for that approximate date is eight miles away in 1802 - Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire - to Sarah Attkin.

Regards,
David

P.S. Thomas is still there is 1851, a butcher born c1781 in Donisthorpe. His wife is then Susanna and he has a granddaughter, Sarah, born in Ashby de la Zouch.
Susanna was born in Cape of Good Hope.

In 1861, Susanna, of cape of Good Hope, is now the wife William Farren in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. Sarah Moris (Morris) of Ashby is with them.

She married William in Ashby de la Zouch District in 1860.

In 1871 they are shown as Farrand in Duffield and have a nurse child, William Morris, born in Matlock.

Thanks very much for this, I'll follow it up.

Strangely enough, I couldn't find your response from within Rootschat -- I only found it in a Google search from outside, hence the delay in thanks.

Thanks for that and thanks to everyone who replied and gave useful clues. I still can't find this from within Rootschat, only from outside, using Google.

For anyone interested, I've put a provisional history here:
