Hi everyone
I am searching for the birth certificate for Thomas Gordon a distant relative.
In the 1871 census for Port-Glasgow he is aged 15 and living with relatives at 40 Church Street Port-Glasgow. His birthplace is Lanark
In 1901 he is aged 50(?)--cant read the census document clearly as the enumerator has slashed though the date--- living with the same relatives at 37 King Street Port-Glasgow and birthplace is given as Lanark.
I have downloaded his death certificate for 4 Jan 1911 at Glenburn Street Port-Glasgow where he was living with another cousin and he is now aged 45 ( which is probably not correct).
I have tried Catholic Records for his birth/baptism in the period 1850-1870 without success. Tried Scotlands people for his birth using his name and also wildcards for the same period. Too many results this time and ran out of credits very quickly trying a few possibles.
How can I narrow my search further.? According to his death cert his parents who are deceased at the time of his death are John GORMAN and Isabella GORMAN (ms SPITTAL).
I'm really hoping to find the parents marriage place which I think may be somewhere in Ireland .
I would also be very grateful for any help tracing the GORMAN families of Port-Glasgow and Greenock .

Hi Orkrad
What was his father's occupation on the death cert?
There is a John and Isabella living in Kirk Row, New Kilpatrick, Stirlingshire in the 1871 Scotland census. John's occupation given then was that of Labourer?

Hi Kinsey
The father's occupation on Thomas's death certificate was Carter.
Thomas(15) and his sister Catherine (9) are both living with relatives in Port-Glasgow in 1871. Is it possible that the parents were already deceased and Thomas and sister are living with relatives for this reason?
Any thoughts about this?

Hi Orkrad
could I ask the name of the relatives he was living with
as on Ancestry 1901 there is only one Thomas Gorman
but it has him as 30 yrs old(could be mistranscribed)
living with relatives (Tolin) possibly Tolan
he is a rivetter
living with him is a Catherine Gorman same age also a relative
possibly a sister or wife

1901 transcription gives his birthplace as Glasgow, Lanarks
-
Thanks Elaine
The relative is Edward Tolin who was present at Thomas's death and lists himself as cousin. I think the age has to be wrong as i am sure Thomas is the same person (living with other members of the Tolin family) who is 15 in the 1871 census,. I think the Catherine listed is his sister as there is no wife indicated on the death cert for Thomas.

Thanks Sancti
It's good to know its Glasgow lanarkshire. However there are 15 people of this name in the period 1850-70 in the Glasgow area and I have tried four so far without success and run out of credits!
I need some help narrowing my search a little to try to get the correct Thomas.
I also tried to find Catherine (Thomas's sisiter I think) who was also born in Lanark without success.

Now I have birth dates for Thomas and Catherine and I know they were born in Glasgow I have something to go on.
I am also interested in Elizabeth Devine. She was my great grandmother. I didn't know she was a grocer. How can I check out where she had her business? Is there a list of businesses in port-Glasgow in the 1880's ?

Not sure if you already have Elizabeths death but....
Elizabeth Devine (was Tolan) died 1900 aged 56 in Port Glasgow.

Not sure if you've checked out this birth for Catherine

there are a couple more in the Lanarkshire area but she is the only one in Renfrewshire ???

Who was the informant on his death certificate?
Could the informant have got the parents names wrong?
-
Hi everyone
The informant on his death certificate was his cousin Edward Tolin. Since Thomas appears to have lived with various members of the Tolin family at various addresses in Port-Glasgow over a period of thirty years I think the details are probably correct.
However it is always difficult believing details on death certs.
Elizabeth Devine (ms Tolin) who was related to Thomas has her age at death recorded in 1900 as 56. She is in the 1841 census aged 10. Almost 60 years later she is 56!
Thanks for all your detective work. Thomas's birth is still a mystery.

Have you tried tracing the death of Catherine Gorman to confirm parents names?
-
Thanks for your reply. I haven't done any research on Catherine as i don't know where or when she died or if she was married. I have only followed the Thomas Gorman line as I felt it would be more profitable. As yet have not sent for his death cert.
