Hi and welcome

There are a couple of hundred births with that surname in Cambridge or with a mothers maiden name of Gotobed between 1916-2006

Welcome to Rootchat ,

Is it the James Gotobed Buried June 1904, Chesterton Reg District, age 56?
Married Rachell BENDALL?
If so after Marriage he is easy to trace but before that appears to be the Step Son of William ROBINSON
Mother Mary Anne Jane born c 1821 Fen Ditton
1861 he is under James Gotebed c 1847 Fen Ditton

Its a bit complicated as there is a Ricket (Ricketts maybe) Step Son the Household also. (Reuben c 1839)

Mary Ann GOTOBED Marriage Reg, June 1849, Chesterton, 14 73
William Robinson on same page

I think I may have figured this out but will wait for you to confirm it is the right James.

There was a Gotobed family who used to live in my village in Hampshire.  I know one of their relatives was on here many moons ago, so maybe they'll see your topic.

I am typing up info as Transcibed;

1861 Census
Horningsea, Cambridgeshire
RG9/1020/80/1
William ROBINSON, 47, Head, Mar, Gardener
Mary Ann Jane, 40, Wife, Mar, born Fen Ditton

Son in Law means Step Son, so both likely Children of Mary Ann Jane. I have confirmed this I think and will explain later.

SYNOPIS;

It appears to me that Rueben Ricket is the Illeg Son of Mary Ann Jane RICKET.
She then Married a GOTOBED and James is born c 1845.
She is Widowed and Married William ROBINSON 1849.
William was a Widower also I would say given all the Children born pre 1849 Marriage.
William Robinson c 1850 is most likely the Son of Mary/William born after Marriage.

1841 Census
Fen Ditton, Cambridgeshire
HO107/67/2/Fen Ditton
William RICKETT, 50, Carpenter
Elizabeth, 40
James, 20, Sheimaker
Alexander, 15, Ag Lab
Rachell, 14
John, 10
Daniel, 8
Sarah, 3
RUBEN, 3****

These are likely Mary Ann Jane's Parents and Rueben is their Grandson.

There is a ANN RICKET c 1822 who is a Female Servant to a Farmers Family in Fen Ditton in 1841 Census.

Marriage Reg;
Charles GOTOBED June 1845, Chesterton, 14 47
Ann RICKET on same page

I cannot find a JAMES Gotobed Birth Reg c 1846 on FreeBMD but there are several Male Gotobed Birth Reg in the right time frame, no 1st name given, in Chesterton Reg District.

Possible Death Reg;
CHARLES Gotobed, March 1846, Chesterton, 14 23

To confirm any of this you would need James GOTOBED's M/C to Rachel BENDALL, Reg Dec 1869, Chesterton, 3b 1065

Trish :)

EDIT FREDERICK JAMES GOTOBED did not die.
1881 Census he is under Fredk Jas Gotobed c 1871. Lodging with George/Martha SCOTT as a Nephew.
An Elizabeth S Robinson is there also.
Martha may be William Robinsons Daughter as her POB/DOB matches the Martha Newling ROBINSON on 1851 Census.

Yes, Marriage for her to George SCOTT 1877 :)

Trish,

I am trying to get my head around all this, you have done really well  ;D

I have a very distant link to the Fen Ditton  'Gotobeds' and have never looked at them so perhaps now is the time.  :-\    ::)  I don't normally bother with going back very far on cousins marriages.

In 1841 Charles, age 20 is living in the same house (differerent household) as Mary Peters age 30 and Mary Peters age 6 - also with him is Hannah Gotobed age 10.
 Hannah that is living with him age 10 is I believe the daughter of William Gotobed from whom 'my' Gotobed link descends.  Mary Peters is I believe Mary Ann Gotobed who married James Peters in 1831, she was christened 5th March 1809, same parents as James.  Whilst I can't as yet locate a christening for 'my William' bn c1805 I suspect he is Charles brother.

Charles was christened 1st August 1819 parents Richard and Mary at Fen Ditton.  Richard Gotobed married Mary Isaacson in 1803.

I'm not sure when this thread was posted but I've just come across it. My great, great grandfather was William Robinson of Horningsea, my great grandfather was Moses, he was the same age as James. I don't think James was the son of Mary Jane. William married a Mary Jane Sheldrick not Gotobed, there were 2 families in the district, cousins I think

Hi Frankyfarrell,
Interesting info but its looks to me that William ROBINSON Married 2 times then.

Did you get Mary Ann SHELDRICK as Mothers maiden name from MOSES Birth Cert?

1841 Census
Horningsea, Cambridgeshire
William ROBINSON, 25, Gardener
Mary Robinson, 25
Elizt Robinson, 4
Martha Robinson, 2
Emma Robinson, 1

1851 we have;
William ROBINSON, 37
Maryan Jane, 29
Martha Newling, 13
Emma R, 11
Sarah R, 9
Amy R, 8
MOSES R, 5
William R, 1
Reuben RICKETTS, 12, Stepson
James GOTOBER,5, Stepson

As Maryann Jane is born c 1822 she would be very young to Marry 1837. Therefore I think she is a second Wife for William and that explains all the Step Children etc in 1851 Census.

Death Reg;
Mary ROBINSON, Dec 1848, Chesterton, 14 29

Burial from Familysearch;
Mary ROBINSON, 03 December 1848, Horningsea, age 35, Birth c 1813

William then remarries 1849 to Mary Ann Jane GOTOBED Nee RICKET

Hi

Will have to get all the paper work out but the census is both confusing and misleading and has to be used with care, I will have to try and remember the details but as I remember he didn't marry twice and the 1822 birth date was also misleading. Reuben Rickett was not the son of a Mary, his mother's name was something completely different, however Mary Ann Sheldrick was born in Fen Ditton as was Reuben and James

What I am very fascinated and haven't been able to get to the bottom of and may be you can help me is why Elizabeth and Martha Robinson were both given the middle name Newling, I would love to know that, it really intrigues me :)

I  have just been reading all the Gotobed posts which more or less tie in with my research as
I am a great granddaughter of James Gotobed (born 1845 in Fen Ditton). His daugther Annie b.1875 was my grandmother .   She married a 2nd cousin, Charles George Gotobed (parents Charles Wm and Catherine Murray) and lived in Fulham.

As this thread has reactivated, I'll mention that Charles Gotobed, journeyman tailor, married Mary Lee in Holy Trinity, Ely 1830.  They are my GGG-grandparents.
Their daughter Priscilla Gotobed (1838-1901) is my GG-grandmother.

Apart from the marriage in Ely, their post-married lives appear to have been entirely based in Cambridge.

Error: Wrong century; my Elizabeth Gotobed married Edward Ayres 12th October 1756 at Great Wilbraham. Since the Ayres /Cornwell etc. etc. tree intermarries amongst itself over several centuries it is more like a ball of wool tangled by a kitten than a tree I have little doubt there will be several other instances that I have not yet found.

Haven't found anymore on the Horningsea Gotobed's so far. The parish records at the Archives
are from 1599 - 2005. Still working on it.

In the meantime, somehow I have a couple of pages from an old newspaper. No idea how, where it
came from or why. Anyway there is one small snippet of info that I'm going to post, just for the heck of it.

The Luton News Thursday October 17, 1940.

GOTOBED - On October 12th, 1940, to Mr. and Mrs. P. Gotobed (nee Edna Brown), of Kensal Rise, a daughter.

No sign of Kensal Rise in Luton .......

That sounds very similar to my classic brickwall, 2xgreat grandfather who was born 1776, probably illegitimately. His army discharge (Kilmainham 1811) says he was born in York, yet, if I have the right suspect he was baptised at Henstridge Somerset in 1777. I have a theory that his mother was very likely to have been a camp follower with a regiment that was stationed near Sherborne (Dorset) in 1775, with whom his father enlisted that year and took her with him. Unfortunately enlistment details for either my 2 or3X great grandfathers do not appear to have survived. The parish where he was supposedly born was St. Mary's, York, (there are 4'!) none of which has the baptism. His surname, Luffman was unknown in the north of England before my 2xGGF in Lincolnshire 1797 with the Somerset militia. Any suggestions welcome.
