We now have a new database in the RootsChat Reference Library.
Looking through various topics, we can see that there are often families involved in particular trades or professions for several generations, who then tend to be in contact with others of the same trade.
A case in point are the German Pork Butchers. In several topics, running to 60+ pages we can see that many german pork butchers emigrated to Britain and set up in business here. These families often married among themselve or worked for each other.
Other such groups that have cropped up on Rootschat are
- Corkcutters
- Framework Knitters
- Canal and Riverboat people
- Circus and Theatre families
A section for the German Pork Butchers has now been started in the
DBSIG: Database for Special Interest Groups

Here you can search by surnames or locations, set up links to others in the database, and, if you find common ancestors, you can add your own name as Researcher to records submitted by others.

then add your interest here.
If enough people want to participate, we can discuss what information is needed,

Great idea ... my people were Framework Knitters from Asfordby, Leicestershire - would be great to connect with others who's families were in the area and working the same trade. Other groups you might also consider were the Nailers (Nail Making Trade) in Birmingham which was a huge industry in the 19th century. Some of my ancestors were Nail Makers and Blacksmiths also.

I seem to be correctly logged into RootsChat.com, but when I go to the German Pork Butchers database and want to add or edit an entry, I keep getting a message about being able to use the PM system before I can do this. I have a lot of data that might be relevant to this database, and having recently been encouraged to add some of my names by a fellow German researcher at the recent Halsted Trust Migration conference, am a bit frustrated as I cannot seem to work out how to do it. Can anyone help please.

Welcome to rootschat Haichem. You might be having this problem because new members need to make three posts before the PM system is activated (this is to prevent spam etc). Just reply here a couple more times and try again. Good luck. :)

As Ruskie says, you need to make at least three posts to use the PM (personal message) system. Access to the Database is restricted until the PM system has been activated because contact with other researchers is made through PMs (no automatic notifications) and if this can't be used, then members can't contact each other.
So just make a couple of replies, and you should be able to enter your data. We have a quite active group of "pork butchers" here and they will be glad to hear from you. There are several topics on german pork butcher ancestry(*) where you can also join in the discussions.

I talked about how I converted some data from Histres and RichardFunk. If you have a lot of data to enter, and this is in an excel table, then perhaps I can also help you, by transferring the data directly from the table to the database.

Thank you to Bob and Ruskie for putting me straight on what I needed to do. I was just too keen to start adding to the database, but guess I should have spent more time investigating Rootschat and how it worked. With reference to the info. I was hoping to add to the table - I do have quite a few names, but some are on the German PB database already, although I could add more detail or make corrections. Also some of my information stems from a 2 hour session with Herr Kraut in the Kunzelsau archives in 2007, when he was able to get my STEIN line back by about 200 years - obviously they were not all Pork Butchers! Is the database specifically concerned with the ones who came here to England and worked as Pork Butchers, rather than their ancestors in Germany? All help and guidance much appreciated.

the focus of the database is german pork butchers in Britain.
So usually it starts with those butchers who were born in Germany and emigrated to Britain, and then includes their children (if they were also pork butchers) and their employees.
Some also went on to America, so these are also included.
There is a field for parent's names, so the german parents of the emigrants can be entered here, but in general, the database doesn't deal with german ancestry as such. It's main use is to help track who came over, where they settled, and the interrelationships (if any) between them.
I do have quite a few names, but some are on the German PB database already, although I could add more detail or make corrections.

At the moment you will need to contact the contributor, and ask them to add your data
(hence the restriction on being able to use the PM system :) )
