Title: Downward Family of Hanmer
Post by: Claire Fraser on Sunday 09 December 12 16:26 GMT (UK)
I'm attempting to trace my husband's family.  His grandmother's maiden name was Downward and I've traced the family as far back as George Downward, born around 1745/1751 in Hanmer.  He married Sarah Eachus (Eachouse) from Worthenbury in 1781.  However, I've now hit a brick wall and wonder if anyone can help.  I note on Ancestry that various people have George as born 1776 in Lee Brocklehurst, Shropshire but as this would make him five when he got married I don't think this is right:)  Would be very grateful for any help please.

Downward, George, Halghton, Hanmer, Flint, Yeoman
  George Downward : will, 1787

This George mentions a nephew also named George  ..  It may be of some help .

Downward, Mary, Hanmer, Flint, Widow
  Mary Downward : will, 1795.
Mary also names a nephew George, so maybe she is the widow of George who died c 1787

You may like to know that this family is also in Prees, Shropshire area and owned land on the Heath (Richard Downward 1718).   Think this was later owned by George Richard D.
An entry in my family shows George Downward married Ledday (Lydia) Gregory 24/1/1703 in Hanmer, Flints.  I think he died in Halghton in 1787.  Their daughter Lydia married William Shore at Whitchurch in 1740.   My family, the Gregorys were always wandering back and forth over the border, too!

Thanks Yvonne.  I'll check out this connection as I think Prees is mentioned at some point.

Ann Downward was the mother of my maternal grandmother. She was born in Halghton, Flintshire and was a direct descendant of George and Sarah Downward who were her great-grandparents. Her father was Thomas Downward born in Halghton 1833, son of William Downward who was the son of the George and Sarah mentioned above, William was born 1795 also in Halghton. Thomas was the youngest son of his (Wiiliam's) first marriage and married Elizabeth Lowe. Thomas, Elizabeth and Ann moved to Bolton in Lancashire around 1854 when Ann was around two years old. Ann later married into a Lancashire family in Bolton and her daughter, my grandmother, and her granddaughter, my mother, were also born in Bolton. The family moved to Blackpool, Lancashire in 1928 and that's where I was born and raised. I moved to Australia twice, first in 1966, and again in 1970 and have lived in various states of Australia since then. I have more information if you want it. Please let me know.

Hi Neil - I didn't have a Thomas Downward in my tree as son of William.  You mention a first marriage for William which, again, I didn't know about.  Could you possibly let me know the date and name of his first wife which would enable me to sort it out.

Thanks Claire (in a very cold and frosty Wales)

Amongst the descendants of George and Sarah there were at least five called William Downward. Their son, their grandson, their great-grandson and their great–great-grandson. About 30 years ago I met and talked with another one in Wrexham who was a great-great-great-grandson. So, are you sure you have the right William? The one that I referred to was their son. His first marriage in 1816 was to Anne Thelwell who died relatively young. They had five sons: William, George, Joseph, John and Thomas. Later, William had two sons from his second marriage. There is more later when I have more time. Best wishes, Neil.

Anne Downward nee Thelwell died in 1843. William was then a widower, but in 1846 married a widow Elizabeth Davies nee Mathews who already had two sons by her first marriage. William and Elizabeth had two more sons Charles and James. Descendants of James are still in and around Whitchurch in Shropshire. Neil

Hello Neil, and anyone else interested in the surname Downward.

You might like to take a peek at the entries on my website, and
you might also come to the conclusion that I got a bit carried away

Thank you so much for the link Jillrose. You have so much information, it must have taken an age to put together. This will prove invaluable.

Thanks for this and the other information Neil. I will have to go back to my husband's tree and marry it all together

George and Sarah Downward had at least three sons who survived to 1815. The eldest was George, next William, my ancestor, and the youngest one Thomas. Please send me some information on your husband's line so that I can give you only that information that is useful to you. Let me know which of the three sons he descends from. My guess is that he is also descended from William and possibly from William's eldest son, also William. However, if his line is different please let me know. You can look me up on Facebook. I know that there are maybe five other men of the same name as mine on Facebook, but I am the only one with a message that says:
“I descend through my mother from a family in Hanmer parish, old Flintshire, Wales, and still have relatives in Wrexham, Wales, and Whitchurch, Shropshire.”
Also, as far as I know, I am the only one who lives in Australia.
If you find me, you could send me a message, and then I can give you information on the living relatives that I know of.
