Title: Gibbons in Chicago from County Mayo Ireland
Post by: bren1974 on Wednesday 02 January 13 19:46 GMT (UK)
Hi there. I would be grateful if anyone had any information on my grandfathers sisters Mary Gibbons born about 1885 and Annie Gibbons born about 1901 in Ballyart, Turlough, Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland.

I found Annie on ellisisland.org arriving in New York on September 24 1922 on the Baltic from Liverpool. The ship manifest says she was going to her sister Mrs M Fahey in Chicago so this must be elder sister Mary.

Thank You

This looks like the family in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Bellavary/Ballyart/1582122/

and in 1911:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Bellavary/Ballyart/711228/

There was another family of Gibbons living next door in both censuses, headed by Michael, so likely related.

Thank you Sandra Heywood and Elwyn ! In the 1901 census my grandfather is Patt aged 10 who went to the USA before returning to Ballyart Mayo Ireland a few years later. We have a record of him arriving at Ellis Island in April 1912 en route to Chicago. Michael is the only one not on the census but there was a Michael. There was also Kate b.1888 John b.1893 and Tom b.1899. They also went to Chicago while Anthony settled in Ireland.

I would be grateful if anyone had any information on the rest of the family

Thank You  :)

Hi there continuing the thread, I would be grateful if anyone had any info on my grandfathers brother Michael Gibbons. He was born about 1883, emigrated to Chicago in 1908, and lived with his sister Mary Fahey in Ward 13, Cook, Illinois in 1910. He never married and we believed he died around the 1950s in Chicago. His parents were Anthony Gibbons and Mary Gibbons ( nee Walsh ) from Ballyart, Castlebar, Mayo, Ireland.

Thank You

Brendan

Could Michael have been studying in 1901? Here’s someone born in Mayo of the right age who was boarding as a student at St Jarleth’s College, Tuam.

Reply 12 gave a possibility for Michael Gibbons based on his age on the 1910 census in reply 4.  However, it does look as if Michael was born 26 May 1880 Ballyart as per family search.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGG2-9GZ

Having an exact birth date throws up the following WW1 Draft:-

Michael Gibbons - 26 th May 1880 - 16 So Sacramento Bldg - Occupation: Street Car Conductor for Chicago City. Naturalized. Some of this is hard to read. It gives sister as Mary Fag 415 ?????? Street. Chicago.
Medium height, medium build, brown eyes, brown hair.
September 12 th 1918

The Michael Gibbons in Tuam would be a different person. I spoke to a family member a couple of days ago who had been told Thomas Gibbons died in Ireland in the early 1920s but that must be him in Ohio as his parents and brothers names are there. However I can't find a record for him at Ellis Island.

We also now believe John never went to the USA but Kate did, however we have little information to go on and i cant yet find her at Ellis Island. Also, we don't know what happened to Annie after she arrived in 1922.

It would be great if anyone had any more information

Thank you

Hi Brendan,

Annie probably married but since marriage records would be few and far between for that timeframe it may not be possible to trace her - unless of course you can ascertain an exact date of birth and then it might be possible.
Could Kate have married prior immigrating to the USA ?

Kate was single when she went to the USA and we assume she went to Chicago as we now know Michael...Mary...Pat ( for a few years )....Tom and Annie went there ! I have no exact date of births apart from the 1901 and 1911 censuses earlier in this thread. Ive been looking at familysearch and found a Kate Gibbons living in the house of D Owen Cottrell, Chicago Ward 13, immigrated 1908 in the 1910 census but thats all i know at the moment.

I was also wondering if you had any information on my grandfather Patrick Gibbons. He arrived in Ellis Island April 1912 with his cousins Patrick and Mary Kate Walsh en route to their Aunt, a lady called Mrs Border Bordis or Bandman ?? 1304 Rosedale Ave Chicago Illinois. He returned to Ireland sometime around 1924.

Thank You

Fully expected to find Patrick on the SSDI - now we have a birth date but he doesn't seem to show.  That could mean he died before 1962 ish or he may have returned to Ireland ?

Thanks again Sandra. I have no idea if he came back to Ireland. My uncles dont know either. So it seems the only relatives we know of are the Faheys who were Marys children. Ive been looking on Mayo Ancestors and found one more sister ! Honor Gibbons christened 20 July 1882 but no date of birth. We presume she went to Chicago as well. I also have a christening date for Catherine Gibbons 31 July 1886 and a date of birth for my grandfather Patrick Gibbons who was in Chicago from 1912-1925 roughly. Patrick was born on 1 April 1890.

I hope someone may have some information  :)

Thanks

Hi there. I've recently found out that my grandfather Patrick Gibbons may have worked on ships during his time in Chicago. He was in the USA from 1912 to about 1924 and he was born in Ireland on 1 April 1890. Maybe he was called up to World War 1 ??

I would be grateful if anyone knew how I could find out more information

Thanks  :)

Thanks Sandra. I still can't find anything for Patrick in the WW1 drafts, but I've been in contact with the Faheys in the USA, the family of Mary Gibbons Fahey !

So, the only families we know of belong to Anthony in Co.Kildare, Ireland......Mary in Chicago......and my grandfather Patrick who returned to Co.Mayo, Ireland.

There's no trace of Ann Gibbons Stanton after 1940......Michael never married and died in Chicago around the 1950s.....John died in Ireland around 1918.....Thomas died in Cleveland, Ohio in 1923...There's no sign as yet of Kate who apparently went to the USA, and Honor is a mystery. She possibly died in Ireland at a young age, but I will try to find out.

We now think Patrick returned to Ireland around 1924, after about 12 years in the USA, maybe as there were no sons or daughters living in Ireland to take over the family farm, except Anthony who was already married living on another farm. Michael ( the eldest ) would have been in his mid 40s, so maybe had no interest in leaving the USA. Maybe Tom ( the youngest son ) intended to return to Ireland before he died at a young age in 1923 ? Patrick married my grandmother Bridget Kerins in 1925 and they had a family in Ballyart.

I would be interested to know when Tom arrived in the USA or if anyone had any more information about him. His date of birth was 20 April 1899, and I can't find any trace of him at Ellis Island.

Thank You.

Brendan

In reply 15 you indicated Michael had probably died about 1950.

There was a death of Michael Gibbons - 28 Apr 1949 - Cook Illinois.

and Michael Gibbons - 7 Jan 1953 - Cook Illinois.

Discounted Michael Joseph Gibbons - 11 Aug 1952 - Cook Illinois (he was born 1914 in Illinois)
