I have just found that one of my lot lived in the Darling Hotel Edinburgh. I am having difficulty finding out about this place.
Either it has gone, or it has had a change of name. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Is this it?

I think it must be. Thanks.
A temperance hotel - indeed!!
I wonder what happened to it?

Hi snowy,
Have a look at the link I googled, seems to be the Darlings Regent Hotel, at Waterloo Street, right in the centre of Edinburgh, almost across from Register House, the GRO.

I was never in the Darlings Regent Hotel, but had many a meal in the St Andrews Temperance Hotel, a sister hotel.

I've now googled Waterloo Place street view. Seems the building is stilll there (although I cannot make out which one it is). But there is no longer a hotel.
All I can say is my ancestor must have been pretty wealthy to be a resident there. ;D

Ah! Worked it out. How sad - a bit of it is now a newsagents and the rest was 'To Let' when the street view was done. :(

I used to work in an office opposite this hotel in the early 1970s. It was a regular venue for lunch, on the first floor. At that time, Temperance it was not.

Do you know why it closed down? It seems such a pity.

Sorry - I left for London in 1973. Perhaps it was through loss of my custom?

Hi All
Darling's Regent Hotel was started c 1867 at 20, Waterloo Place as Temperance Hotel run by Mr James Darling. It continued to be run and expanded by the family it occupied 17-22, Waterloo Place. After his death, his daughter Jane ran with other members of the family until she died inthe '30s when it was bought by North British Hotels who continued running it until 1976. Sometime afterwards it became Council Offices and finally it has reverted to a hotel, a Travelodge from where I am writing this email.
Mr. Darling also acquired the premises in South St. Andrews St. which became the St. Andrews Hotel, again Temperance. This was run by his niece, Isabella, until her death in 1942 but continued in the family for another two generations. I am currently researching both these hotels plus a couple of others that may have been connected with the Darlings and other members of my tree.
Cheers
Niall

Thank you for that. It's nice to know that it has retuned to being used as a hotel, even if it is only a Travelodge. ;)

Hi, I have only just seen your post on here and thought I would reply.
My parents worked for North British Trust Hotels and were the resident Managers at the hotel for around 8 years until it closed down in 1976. They then moved to the Greens Hotel in Eglinton Crescent. I lived there until I married in 1975. If there is anything I can help with please message me back. My Mum and Dad were Mr & Mrs Lee (both now sadly deceased).
Kindest regards, Julie

Hi. I am new to Rootschat. I arrived here when Googling Darling's Regent Hotel. MY grandparents were married in this hotel on 4th September 1908. It was a Temperance Hotel at that time for sure!
