Welcome to the posting for the Manchester General Cemetery Transcription Project!
Our project has been fabulously successful, so much so, that our original posting has gotten a little to large, so Rootschat would like to shorten it, which is great as it tidies things up for us. ;)
We will post regularly for 'Ground Work' dates which are on Sundays!!

What a great idea. We have just had a cemetery bulldozed in Western Australia. A concerned woman tried to stop it but to no avail, so keep up the good work gmar

We were actually asking for rain on Sunday, the ground was so dry in parts your couldn't dig!!
Hopefully the showers predicted for this week will help us at weekend.

It's hard to believe we are approaching the MGCTP's 3rd Birthday - time certainly flies. I wish I could be in Manchester more often to lend a hand. I've certainly enjoyed being part of the team and never imagined when we started that it would be as successful as it is. Thank you Cancan for your dedication, hard work and excellent co-ordination which have contributed so much to the Project's success.

Thank you so much for locating my 2nd great grandparents, Job and Anne Gregory, my 3rd great grandmother, Job's mother, Frances Gregory, and Frances' sister, Sarah Beaton. This opens up another generation of my birth family that I knew nothing about. Since I live in the US, I am unable to visit the cemetery but I have photos of their stone. Your reply to my initial query was super fast and I greatly appreciate it. Now to continue my research and try to figure out what happened to Frances' and Sarah's husbands, in addition to what Frances' and Sarah's maiden name is. E from USA.

I just want to say a big thank you to the team for looking for my ancestors graves & sending me photos. It's been so exciting & has enabled me to share the info on our common ancestors with relatives in the USA. I'm so glad that you guys do the work you do & that their are people who care about the cemetery. I recently found out that my 3rd Great Grandma had been been buried at the Cheetham Hill, Wesleyan Cemetery but that all the bodies had been exhumed & reburied in a mass grave at Bury all to make way for a Tesco! I can understand grave yards are difficult to look after but would have much preferred they'd photographed the memorials before removal & made the area into a community park or gardens. Keep up the good work at Harpurhey guys. I will try & come over from Blackpool to give a hand soon. PW.

I've loads of ancestors buried in Manchester cemeteries, but have never visited the graves. Maybe if I ever go back up there, I'll have a look round.

A little bit of trivia, found by Cancan, whilst she was researching some of our Notable Burials. It made us smile so we thought it worth sharing.
Apparently in January 1916, the “new electric trains” which were on trial runs between Manchester and Bury “spark vividly and diffuse a bluish radiance into space”. Two stories began circulating around Manchester, the first being that Zeppelins had attempted to bomb the City but had been scared away before they could do so but in the vicinity of Manchester General Cemetery the flashes of light shining on the gravestones prompted rumours of ghosts. Large crowds of people gathered at the cemetery gates hoping to see something ghostly and those with a good enough imagination convinced themselves they had. The crowds however didn’t last long and after a few nights the crowds diminished.

Cancan has been number crunching and whilst I was just adding a paragraph to our website, I thought the information might be of interest here as well.
There are 96,456 burials recorded in the Burial Registers. This does not include the 9,543 stillborns and 48 sets of still born twins bringing the total to 106,047. This figure also doesn't include the burials in the Church (Consecrated) plots before 26 March 1886. The Burial Registers for this section prior to this date haven’t survived so the only record of the burials will be the transcriptions recorded from the gravestones. When completed we will add these to the current total.

Beannie was much more relaxed. Normally I can ramble on for hours about Our Cemetery, so I think I missed a lot of information out.

Manchester General Cemetery's Oldest Resident?
Until recently William Draper (Consecrated 3536) held the record as being the Cemetery's oldest resident. He was 101 years old when he died in 1903. This has now been beaten by Mary Walker who was buried on 14 December 1862. She was aged 106 years and a resident of Lamb Lane, Collyhurst. It was reported in the local press that "she had never been compelled to resort to the use of spectacles". Apparently until the last two years of her life, she always fetched her own water from the well and always fetched the 5s 6d per week allowed to her by the Guardians. Mary Walker was interred in a public grave (Unknown 18621214) and as far as we know there is no gravestone.

Celebrating Today!!!
Today 5th Oct 2014 we are celebrating as we have now completed the Church Sections of
the General Cemetery.
We have uncovered every single flat stone in the Church Sections,
barring about 10 stones as they were covered by a tree or tree roots to big to get any details from.
Some of these have been very deep and hard to uncover, but the Team got stuck in
and uncovered them!
The best part of this part of the Cemetery is that if anyone buried in Church sections
who died before 26th March 1886, there are NO RECORDS of them being buried in the Cemetery.
We have concentrated mainly on these sections to get these gravestones for this reason.
We are Celebrating our Anniversary of the Project soon and we will be starting the 5th year of it!!

Edward Nightingale (circa 1809-1861)
Edward Nightingale was landlord of the General Abercrombie public house in Great Ancoats Street, Manchester and was a well-known Chartist activist. He was a marshal at the famous Chartist meeting on Kersal Moor in September 1838 and a speaker at other events. He was not always popular with other Chartists however; he gained a reputation for heckling and ‘strong-arm tactics’ and was known as the “Dictator of New Cross”. Around 1840, he went into business with fellow reformer Elijah Dixon, as partner in the timber and match-making firm of Dixon and Nightingale. In the mid-1840s he moved to Newton Heath and lived with his family at Heath Hall, a large house at the junction of Oldham Road and Droylsden Road. He later became one of the Poor Law Guardians for the township of Newton. Edward died on 17th July 1861 at his residence, Heath Hall, and was buried with his wife Mary and two of his daughters, Phoebe Sophia and Sarah Frances.
Charles Edward Ullathorne (1845-1904)
The inscription reads “In Loving Memory of Charles Edward Ullathorne of Kingston upon Hull, born April 11th 1845 died May 2nd 1904”
Charles Edward (Charlie) was a cricketer who played at county level in Yorkshire in the 1860’s-1870’s. He was born in Hull, and his obituary in the Hull Daily Mail described him as “a good batsman, but his fielding even excelled his batting in its usefulness, his speed, accuracy of throwing in, alertness and agility being famous in his day.” Another obituary in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph stated that he lived in the Manchester area for about 10 years before his death and had been a groundsman for Eccles Cricket Club. In 1897 he had four of his children baptised at St Thomas’ Church, Red Bank, where he was recorded as a commercial traveller living at 84 Stocks Street. He died of TB and is buried with his wife Edith and three grandchildren.

for the General Cemetery just put 'Harpurhey' in the search box, brings up Hendham Vale but shows the Cemetery in great detail! Even showing the pauper graves at the far back of the Cemetery!
You can help out the website by putting 'tags' on the photo's to show places, names and streets that you know of! Most of the photo's are of streets etc., that are no longer there! 1919-1953!!
Great for the genealogists looking for long gone homes of ancestors!

Hi All,
The weather has been pretty mild and we are now getting ready to back to the Cemetery.
We visited on Sunday and the Council have repaired by re-tarmacking parts of the path.
The Ivy and trees have been cleared away on the left had side of the Cemetery next to the wall,
making it a lot easier for people to get to the gravestones.
There has been a general clean up of the grounds, getting rid of leaves, branches and the trees pruned.
We are thinking that if the weather is good to us this year, we can complete.
Still looking for more Volunteers! if anyone has a free Sunday, even if it is just a couple of hours please lend a hand!!

Hi, I think I may have found the grave of Elijah and Martha Dixon, buried 29/7/1876 and 7/6/1873 respectively. The dates seem about right (Elijah died on 26/7/1876), and Elijah's wife was named Martha, so it looks as though he has been incorrectly indexed as "Eliza". The grave is number 4077 in the "Unknowns" section - this is a link to the entry in the Manchester Burial Records:-

Thanks Alan for taking the time to post and to contact us through the project website. We have added the mis-transcribe to our list which we will eventually be passing on to Manchester City Council Bereavement Services. We agree whoever transcribed it has read the name as Eliza instead of Elijah.
The Dixon family vault is located on Non Conformist Plot 1 within Manchester General Cemetery which is the section to the right as you enter through the main gates from Rochdale Road. We are confident we know the exact location of the vault and have identified one of the vault stones but unfortunately an inscribed memorial no longer exists.
Elijah Dixon is one of our "Notables" and we have a short biog on our website together with a picture which was digitally restored by one of our fellow Rootschatters.

Thanks, Luzzu, for your reply and the link to the photograph. My interest in Elijah stems from local history: I live in New Moston (on what was Dixon St, in fact!) and you probably know that, among his many other activities, Elijah helped form the Bridgewater Freehold Land Society in 1851, to provide allotments of land that would give voting rights to the owners or tenants. The parcel of land purchased (originally part of Chadderton) became New Moston. Elijah himself did not reside here until the 1860s, his last residence, Vine House, being an existing property, built on the site of an 18th century house that had suffered a major fire. The 19th century house still exists (pic attached) on what was formerly Ricketts St, now Parkfield Rd North. Elijah was certainly an interesting character, and I think we could do with a few more like him today! Cheers, Alan

We have just added a photograph of the vault stone on Elijah and Martha Dixon's grave - Non Conformist 4077 - to our website. According to the registers they are buried in a vault rather than a grave but it looks like a single vault rather than one of the larger family vaults. Unfortunately any inscription that was there originally has long gone.

New information relating to Manchester General Cemetery is being added all the time as the project progresses.
We now have a page dedicated to Policemen and Firemen buried in the Cemetery and recently added Notable Burials include:-
Samuel Perkin (1765-1837) - Samuel Perkin was buried on 11th November 1837, just two months after the Cemetery opened. This is the earliest gravestone we have recorded so far;
James Dilworth (1789-1854) - the founder of James Dilworth & Sons, Manchester yarn agents. The Dilworth family vault is one of the largest in the Cemetery;
David Stewart (c1810-1850) - an "ancient forester" - an organisation which was formed in 1834 and which still trades today as the Foresters Friendly Society;
Mary Mitton (1803-1869) and her son, Thomas (1846-1869) - their gravestone told us that mother and son died on the same day which prompted us to research why - tragically they died together when a fire broke out at their shop on Rochdale Road;

From time to time the MGCTP team come across a gravestone inscription with gives a small clue as to the what caused the death of the deceased person and quite often there is a story to tell. In the case of William Henry Slack, the nature of his death and the story behind it is a tragic one.
The inscription on the gravestone on Non Conformist 1650 reads:-
“......... William Henry, beloved son of Matthew and Hannah Slack, who was killed in a main sewer at Moston, Octr 23rd 1868, aged 14 years and 6 months .........”
A main sewer seemed a very unusual place to die so it warranted further investigation. A search of the newspapers told the story of a tragic accident. At around 12.00 noon on October 23rd 1868 at Boggart Hole Clough, Moston, William and two friends left the nearby construction site where they were employed on their break and came across the opening of the sewer which was around 17 feet in depth. One of the boys wanted to show off his athletic ability descended into the sewer and came out again safely. Not wanting to be beaten, the second boy did the same. William Slack followed but on his way out, he missed his footing and fell. Seeing what had happened, one of his friends wanted to raise the alarm and bring help but the other boy cautioned against it thinking it would be better to say nothing, so they left him there. It wasn’t until around 10.00 p.m. that guilt got the better of one of the two boys and he confessed what had happened to his older brother who raised the alarm and called the police. William Henry Slack was found dead at the bottom of the sewer. At first the police thought his death was suspicious and was as the result of foul play but after an enquiry it was found to be an accident. The cause of his death was an injury to the head.

No idea on Rootschat what I am doing so please stick with me. My name is Emma and I wish to get involved with the project. I have a number of direct relatives buried there. I'm a Genealogist of some years and have a BA in History and honours in Genealogy. I love gardening so should be some handy skills for you guys. I've not managed to locate my McCannon Grandfather there. I think it's brilliant what you guys do. So proud of the article in Family Tree. Wonderful ;)

Prolific author, librarian and member of Manchester Literary Guild, Alfred Owen Legge (1835-1897) - his works include Manslaughter, The Growth of the Temporal Power of the Papacy and The Unpopular King : Richard III;
Contractor, Peter Jones (1811-1867), best known for the construction of the Woodhead Tunnel on the Manchester/Sheffield railway, which when it was built was the longest tunnel in England;
On our page Buried Stories we aim to tell the story behind the inscription on the gravestone and have added Mary Ellen Baker (1872-1884). She tragically died when the school bell fell on her at the Board School, Harpurhey.
We have also added Jabez Sykes to our collection of Policemen.

We are always adding new information about Manchester General Cemetery and very soon will be adding some helpful information about researching our ancestors who may have been buried in some of the many other Manchester cemeteries and churchyards. We are always happy to help and can be contacted via the website or on Rootschat.
There is a page on the website which we have named "Buried Stories". This is when we have found a grave where the inscription leads us to believe there is a story or the manner of death was due to unusual circumstances.
The latest addition however concerns the death or rather the non-death of Jane Shakeshaft Sweeney. In this case however there is no gravestone, no inscription and the name of the person who was actually buried on 2nd April 1866 is a mystery. It would be wonderful if any of the Rootschatters can help us find out more .......
In March 1866 a death occurred in Angel Street, Manchester and was registered in the name of Jane S Sweeney, aged 24 years, 1st quarter 1866 Manchester 8d 309 but all was not as it seemed because Jane didn’t actually die. Somebody else did and was buried in her place.
This is the story which was told to Mr Herford, the City Coroner at the inquest held on 6th April 1866.
In February 1866, a man and a woman rented a house in Angel Street, which is located off Rochdale Road in the Harpurhey district of Manchester. They lived as man and wife and were known by the name of Sweeney. The woman was about 24 years old. Within a few weeks the woman became very sick and was tended by the landlady who made her gruel. Mr Sweeney added sugar to the gruel and fed it to his wife. She became much worse and on 30th March 1866 she died.
The following day, Easter Saturday, Mr Sweeney travelled to Toxteth Park, Liverpool to visit a Mrs Hill who was his wife’s sister to inform her that he had fallen in love with Jane Shakeshaft, they had subsequently married and now Jane Shakeshaft Sweeney was lying dead in Manchester. That very same day, Mr Sweeney wrote to his wife’s and Mrs Hill’s mother, who lived in Blackpool, and also called upon another of his wife’s sisters to inform them of Jane’s death.
The bereaved family comprising Mr Sweeney, his mother-in-law and his two sister-in-laws all travelled to Manchester on the following Monday for Jane’s funeral and burial at Manchester General Cemetery. Prior to the burial the family members viewed the body and according to the newspaper reports at the time didn’t recognise her as their relative. However, they presumed her illness had changed her appearance so didn’t take the matter any further.
The burial proceeded as planned and afterwards the family returned back to the rented accommodation in Angel Street at which point Mr Sweeney disappeared. On the Monday evening, Jane’s mother and sisters returned to Liverpool. Shortly after their arrival, Mrs Hill was shocked by the appearance of Jane at her home, the sister who she believed she had just buried in Manchester.
Jane, having heard rumours of her death, had decided to visit her family to put their minds at ease. Meanwhile, the surgeon in Manchester who had attended the death had been asked at the time, by Mr Sweeney, to guarantee the cost of the funeral and other related expenses and was now being called upon to repay the debt.
The body which had been buried in Manchester General Cemetery was exhumed and the cause of death was confirmed as “effusion of blood on the brain”. The remains of the unknown woman were re-buried but her identity has never been discovered and so remains a mystery.

We haven't been at the Cemetery this year due to bone breakages (not on the project) and bereavements. Been a pretty terrible year for a few of us.
Back now to catching up with things.
We will be back at the Cemetery on the groundwork days in the Spring weather permitting.
We're raring to go!!!
Did visit a couple of so weeks ago and it was just as we left it, apart from grass being cut, nothing else has happened!! Little Jean did celebrate a birthday!!!
We do still have the free of charge lookups for everyone to contact us, and we have helped quite a few!! for those looking for family burials!
Hopefully the website is going to be updated and a few changes made soon, plenty to keep us busy over the winter!!

I was one of the early volunteers on this project as well. Most of the work was done by two dedicated Rootschatters recording at the cemetery itself, and one other (who was not based in the UK) maintaining the website. After the initial 'work party' meetings, when Rootschattters turned up from all over Manchester and Lancashire, there were perhaps half a dozen more volunteers like me, who turned up whenever we could. Of course the pandemic didn't help, and although the intention was to get started again once all that was over, I suspect other things will have got in the way. As they posted a while back, the two 'lead' volunteers had both been involved with family issues and bereavement, and although genealogy is great, sometimes you do have to focus on your present-day family and friends. I see neither of them has been active on Rootschat since summer 2021. I don't know what happened to with the website either, but I can't believe all the paperwork recording the gravestones has been binned. It was a lot of work! We started out with a blank spreadsheet printout, filled it in by hand at the cemetery (a spreadsheet square corresponding to a grave row/number) and Cancan then transferred it onto her computer at home. The intention was to pass the record on to either Manchester Archives or the MLFHS, with the proviso that it would always be free to access by anyone who needed it. There was also mention at one stage, of the Friends of Philips Park getting involved with Manchester General, but I think that was more to do with general park maintenance - we were just concerned with transcribing the headstones.
It's great that you helped to get the project going in the early days, BF. I really do believe your contribution will still be around somewhere. That handwritten spreadsheet was very precious to them, and all the photos. I'm not angry at all, but I do hope Cancan and Beannie are all right.

I echo that ,such dedication and hard work, very well organised too.
Our problem was that sadly teenagers congregated in the cemetery and often boasted “ I pushed that gravestone over!”
They were quite menacing ,you were anxious as to where you could safely park your car.We were quite old and no match for such louts.
So my admiration for the volunteers who slogged on is immense,and one ,a very kind man found and photographed a pair of family graves with my maternal great grandparents in one and my mother’s teenage sister and my mother’s baby sister ,grandma’s twelfth and last baby in the other,side by side.
I liked doing the logging ,but it is not a safe place even with a fair sized group of people and after my husband’s heart attack, no place for us to be.
I hope all the records have been saved , so all the dedication has not been in vain .

Me and Cancan fell out on the direction of the project and has it was her baby, sadly I walked away, I wish I had not but I cannot rewind time.
I did ask her when she was asking for volunteers a couple of years later, would she like my help and no was the answer.
Am I bitter no as I switched to helping "FB group - The Friends of Philips Park" with grave data and updated plot plans which I freely gave to the group once I had done each one.
Barbara can I assume only Cancan had the data from what you typed? I hope she had it backed up, I have 3 backup HD's on my pc as I lost a HD a few years ago which I could not recover data from, I wont fall for that again lol!.
Anyway I don't use Rootschat very often nowadays but just thought I have a look at your project and was shocked it had vanished. A quick look on Who.is and the site is registered until (Expires On 2023-07-30)
I wish Cancan & Luzzu all the best and hope the project has just stalled and not failed for some reason.

I have noticed Blackburn Fossil’s concern about the MGCTP. The project was a self-funded, volunteer project which was very ambitious but sometimes other personal issues have to take priority, as Barbara quite rightly mentioned. This has been coupled with the pandemic and a cost of living crisis.
I was the non-UK member and worked on transcriptions, researching biographies and handled many of the enquiries received for grave searches which we were successfully able to solve. I know how meticulous Cancan was in the management of the information gathered from the project. Certainly all the visible stones were recorded as well as a great number of buried stones which were dug out and recorded. As well as photographing and transcribing the stones the cemetery was mapped.
I was very sad when I was forced to step back from the project a few years ago due a life changing medical condition requiring neurosurgery. Thankfully I am in remission now but have had to scale back on many activities I enjoyed doing.
I can’t give an answer as to the project status but when I was last involved the project was far from being a failure and the information gathered was most certainly backed up.

I do hope it does finally get finished and the data made available as we all know Manchester General Cemetery is a nightmare to get info from as the register books are in such poor condition.

Thank you, yes, this is exactly what I'd love to speak to someone from the project about. It's a radio documentary so my presenter may like to interview someone from the project about this discovery. I hope someone from the project will respond here.

I remember seeing Robert Rose's grave before we covered it up again, it was a real thrill and such a lovely headstone. John Bolton Rogerson (one of Robert's poet friends) was registrar of the General Cemetery wasn't he? Hope the radio documentary goes well, I'm sure lots of people would find it fascinating.

Is there any way of finding out which graves are listed in your project please? I'm helping a friend to find out about her family history and we are trying to trace her great grandma Elizabeth Rodgers who is listed on the 1911 Welsh census with her husband Joseph Rodgers and their children but she left her husband and moved to Ashton with her children sometime around the mid 1900’s, my friend was told by her mother that her great grandma passed away from the Spanish flu in Ashton along with at least one of her children but we can't find her death recorded anywhere, if anyone can help I would be very grateful.
Unfortunately, we don't know Elizibeth’s maiden name and if she reverted back to her maiden name before she died we have no way of knowing.

If so the mmn of the children is Jones. Mary Ann and Amelia are in Dukinfield, Ashton under Lyne on the 1921 census with the Travis family. There is this death for Elizabeth.

Where did you find the record of Elizabeths death please? Do you know if Elizabeth or any of her children were buried in Ashton, I was wondering if their graves may have been some of those recorded by the graves project 🤔 do you know where I could I see a copy of the 1921 census that the family are listed on that you mentioned please? Thank you again for your help, I'm very grateful and can't believe how quickly you found that great information for us xx

Just one more quick question please 😊 where does the Travis link come in? Are they family members of Elizabeth’s children?

I have had Ancestry and FindMyPast at various times and both are good, they both have the basics and certain other record sets. Here is a thread about an Ancestry offer and links to see what Yorkshire record sets each company has. Only FindMyPast has the 1921 census.

This looks like Martha Ann Travis in 1911, married 1912 to Samuel Travis. Amelia and Mary Ann are boarders in 1921.
