Doesn't his birth cert show where he was born

Hi Marcie,
Can you give us John Laidlaw's mothers name, and fathers name if known also. I checked on Scotland Peoples website and there are 8 born in 1872, so may need to check on census first then work back.

Is this the same John Laidlaw mentioned in reply 7 on this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,396719.msg3577599.html#msg3577599
William and his adopted son John
If it is - then John presumably wasn't born as Laidlaw
-
I think that this might be another thread about him:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=509358.0
And this post and a previous one about RCE suggests he was born Yarrow:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,509358.msg3559708.html#msg3559708
The thread goes to 5 pages :-\
PS - on Birth reg his mother's name given as Janet M.S Anderson

John and Janet married Johnstone, Dumfriesshire on 13th Dec 1872, which might explain the wrongly registered birth (17th Nov 1873) and subsequent RCE (for 1872) as, in Scotland, the child would have been legitimised by parents' marriage.
In 1881 the family are here:
Yarrow, Selkirk
John Laidlaw, 32, gamewatcher, b. Ettrick
Janet, w, b. Johnstone
John, s, 7
Janet, d, 6
James, s, 4
Robert, s, 3
William, s, 2
All children b. Yarrow
John and Janet's birthplaces match those on marriage cert.

Hume seems to have found the correct family here (John b.c. 1869):

I cannot find a birth for John to these parents so it would be interesting to find where you found his birth certificate. It looks like he could have been registered under another name and brought up as William and Margaret as their own.
