I have run out of ideas....looking for the Parents of my Great Grandfather;
Andrew (Anders) Fredrick Hillstrand (could be Hellstrom also) born 16 Jan 1881 in Helge, Stenkyrka, Sweden.
Arrived in the USA; Oct 1901, lived in Minnesota, then Burleigh, North Dakota and
died 23 Feb 1951 in Riverside, California, USA,
He was single when he arrived in the USA.
Would love to find his Parents and beyond.....

Hiya Buffa - Hillstrand only shows Danish family tree on this site - but there are 353 for Hellstrom - have a look through them - couldn`t find Helge or Stenkyrka families - but similar naming towns ...anyway -register for free and have a good look around those trees - will take a long time but you may be lucky and find a connection

Can you confirm:
When, where, and under what name he entered the US
His birthdate - he may have been born later than 1881? Dates seems to vary although if I have it right he may have lowered his age when he married Melita.
It does appear to me that there were two Andrews of a similar age, which makes things tricky:
1. Andrew Hillstrand, m. Marie b. Sweden - in 1910 and 1920 in ND with daughter Zelda
2. Andrew Hillstrand m. Mary b. MN - in 1910 onwards in MN with son Melvin
One of these (ND Andrew as he has a WWI record with right birthday but 1883 not 1881) appears to then move to California sometime between 1920 and 1930, along with (second?) wife Melita.

- here is the marriage to Melita. It does give his parents but only as "A Hillstrand" and "Bessi Jackopson".
Interesting that he lists himself as single - although birthday is consistently 16 Jan for both WWI record in ND - wife Marie in Bismarck - and WWII - wife Melita (place of birth FALUN, Sweden on this record)
The spelling Hellstrand does appear in Sweden. I think "Hellstrom" may be a red herring (unless you have a confirmed record of him which uses it).

I know his Birthday from his Military Record from WW1 says 1883 but all census records work out to 1881? Another head scratcher?
It is the Hillstrand from ND...Zelda was my Mom's Mother.
I keep seeing that other one from MN with the Son, Melvin but I'm sure that they only had the 2 Daughters as my Mom never said anything about having Uncles.
My Bad...it should have read "Anders Hellstrand" arriving 4 Oct 1901 his Destination: Willmar Minnesota
...you know how names were sometimes changed to sound more American/English/Canadian etc.
I have wondered if Maria was a name change from Melita? Just can't seem to find marriage records or Divorce records???

He might have lowered his age to be younger when he signed up to the military, or on some records to match the ages of his wives.
Marie and Melita are definitely different people (Melita was b. 1895 ND and Marie about 1883 Sweden). It was much harder to track people back then, so possibly he just left Marie (no divorce, etc - or of course, she could have left him!), and Melita may or may not have known he wasn't single when they married.
I would guess that the first marriage either took place in MN or ND and there's not much online for thos areas. If you look on familysearch for father's last name Hillstrand mother's list name Pierson and leave the rest blank you will see a death record for daughter Beatrice and also a possible marriage for Zelda going by "Lou Christine Hill" which show their mother's maiden name as Pierson.
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov does show a 1910 article which says that Mrs Andrew Hillstrand and Albert C Jasperson, left for Morris, Minnesota on the 26th February 1910 having received word that their father had died there that morning (think this was Albert's father in law, actually). They would return with Mrs Jasperson and Zelda Hillstrand who had been visiting her grandmother. A slightly later record mentions Mrs Albert C Jasparson and Mrs Andrew Hillstrand as sisters.
http://people.mnhs.org/dci/ shows a Peter Parson d. 26 Feb 1910 who would fit.
If you can work out where Marie's family settled on arrival into the US (Morris? Willmar?) - then that is probably also where she and Andrew married.

WOW jorose you are sure making me think more.
I had dug up a marriage date of 05 Mar 1905 for Andrew and Marie in Stevens MN, but can't remember where I got that...they were still living in MN on the 07 Jun 1905 Census.
Beatrice Elizabeth Udall (nee Hillstrand) is my Grand Aunt...knew that one, she was known to change her DOB.
Ran that "Lou Christine Hill"...that is wild! Found in the 1930 Census that George O Mosby was Divorced by then.
Zelda (my Grandmother) is something of a real mystery, she supposedly died in a Car Accident with my Grandfather Walter Fearn 15 Aug 1951 but her body was never recovered, speculation she murdered Walter as he was found behind the wheel of the car...Walter DID NOT drive!
My Father swears she showed up in the 70's but she never got to talk to my Mother.
Maybe Andrew Hillstrand left without Divorcing Marie....

- if you look at this image you can see Andrew, Marie, and possibly Marie's father Peter together in the 1905 census in Morris, Stevens Co, MN. (index only - don't know how much there would be on the actual record)

In response to your original question, I have had a look for your great grandfather. There are two places called Stenkyrka, but I could not find him in either place's birth records. Where did you get his birth info from?

The only reference I've found, personally, is his WWII record which says he was b. Falun (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V485-82V )
Back on Mary's side:
1909: "Miss Tilley Persons", visiting her sister Mrs Andrew Hillstrand, from Morris, MN, becomes a bookkeeper for the Bismarck Construction Co.
An interesting set of people in 1905 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/SPQD-5VZ ) - seems to be that the Hillstrands were listed twice:
Johanna P Pearsons, 48, b. Sweden
Tilley Pearsons, 18, b. Minn
Zelda Wilson, 4, b. Minn
Annie J Wilson, 23, b. Sweden
Marree Hilstrand, 21, b. Sweden
Andrew Hillstrand, 23, b. Sweden

Could this be them in 1910! - explains why Peter is listed on 1905 separately (seems to be a bit of a trend in this family!)

Andrew and his Birthdays.... His WW1 Draft Card has him born 16 Jan 1883 and on his Death Certificate it has 16 Jan 1881....starting to wonder if there are more then one Andrew Fredrick Hillstrand????

OK, I have gone back through the birth records for both Stenkyrka's, and checked from 1880 to 1883, but no Anders.
Buffa, are you able to attach an image of any document showing his birthplace? If he did not fill it out himself, but verbally gave the information, it might be an alternative spelling of somewhere else. I can then compare it to the parishes on arkivdigital for you.

This is driving me nuts...I can't remember where I found that info on Andrew/Anders being born in Helge, Stenkyrka, Sweden.
I attached that several years ago....I thought it was from his WW1 Draft card but that only had Sweden on it.

Here is an entry of a Anders Hellstrand on the way to Minnesota from Gothenburg. He was 20 years old and from Gagnef which is not too far from Falun.
This Anders was born 16 January 1881 but with the name Anders Johan Hellstrand.

Hi again...
Here is Anders in the Church Book in 1901, the same year he left for USA. His mother is Brita Andersdotter who was a mute and deaf. Anders was illegitimate. Anna Jakobsdotter is Brita's mother.
I have found all other records to do with this family. I am pretty sure it is him and if you want more please let me know.

Name: Anders Johan (The 1 means it is her first child)
Parents' Names: Andersdotter, Lawman's Britta, Unmarried - Deaf and mute. (No father's name)
Residence: Gagnef, Bomsarfvet.
Lawman meaning a type of policeman.

Here is Britta's death record: 10 Dec 1913
She died of an incarcerated hernia.

Britta's father's name was Anders Gustaf Andersson born 19 Nov 1822 and died 21 April 1857.
Britta came from Leksand and moved to Gagnef in 1856. She lived in Bomsarfet, Gagnef till her death.

Marie Pearsons: pretty sure she was born 28 May 1884 in Sweden, think she departed for the USA as an Infant...think her Mother's name was, Johanna Christine Bengtson??? Father could have been Peter Pearsons???

How do you know Marie's mother was called Bengtson?
I have found though a census from North Dakota 1900. At the top there is a Johanna Person with daughter Tilly. She is married to Carl Person who she married in 1893. This is definately Johanna, Marie's mother.

So the name Pearson could have come from Carl.

That was a bit of a left turn seeing Carl Person...I had discounted that name a few years back because the Marriage date didn't jive with the Birthdates for Marie (born 1884ish)...but she did have a sister named Tilly A.H. Person but I have Tilly's Birthdate as 1900 from the 1930 Census.
There might have been another Sister named Annie who was married to "Wilson" no first name...she had a Daughter named Zelda Augusta Wilson who married John Kornberg. These names come from some Legal Papers my Mother had.
The plot thickens.

Yes, but Johanna married Carl and had a daughter Tilly. Marie and Anna are from another marriage or are illegitimate from Sweden. It looks as though Carl died early and Johanna moved back to Minnesota and the whole family took the name Pearson. Tilly according to most censuses was born around 1886.
Can you tell me how you know the Bengtsson name attached to Johanna.

Anna Jakobsdotter and her first husband Anders Andersson had 2 sons too:
Anders born 19 May 1854 and died 23 Oct 1856
Olof born 14 Feb 1856 and died 30 Oct 1856
Anna Jakobsdotter and her second husband Anders Olsson also had children:
Anna born 22 March 1859
Anders born 5 Oct 1862 and died 19 Apr 1863
Anders born 28 Sept 1864
Also. Can you please tell me about the Bengtsson name I asked earlier.

01 Jan 1900 rather then 1889!

Ok, cheers. Do we suppose this info is accurate? Her birth year according to the censuses don't add up compared to what is on the death record.
Having a name to search is very helpful anyway.

Just checked Tillie's Minnesota "find a grave"...it has 1889 on it.
On page 8 of that 1900 Census you attached, there is a Marie (born 1884) and Zelda Ann (born 1882) Barnes listed as Daughters, which works out but it has Marie born in New York for some reason? Not sure where the 'Barnes' comes from at all.

Thanks for all that. I believe that the census with Carl as Johanna's husband to be them. Carl's name is on the death certificate.

Ok... I think I have found them. The names and Johanna's date of birth fits. Peter is also there and his date of birth also fits with the censuses from Minnesota. Anna Sofia and Marie survived. It looks as though 2 children died on the trip. And they went to America.

I have managed to decipher all that text beside the Persson family. It appears that Peter Persson was a bit of a rebel. I went back to 1854 and found that on 2 occasions, once in 1854 and the other 1859, that Peter and his father were in prison for theft. They had broken into someone's home and burgled them.
I have been trying to find this family in the passenger lists, but to no avail. I think they left from Copenhagen. According to the censuses from USA they arrived at different times.
The thing that puzzles me though is that Johanna was married to Carl in 1900. Peter Pearsons was living with Marie in 1905. Did they divorce?
Also, according to the 1900 Census Johanna had 4 children and 1 had died. I wonder if Bror Arvid died on the ship coming over?

I came across this string randomly. . .
I believe the same Andrew Frederick Hillstrand was my grandfather. I believe I have the hard copy of his death cert somewhere. . . maybe even a birth cert. I would need to dig. Per the string, my grandmother was Melita (Krieger) Hillstrand. Out in California your great grandfather had two sons. Andrew Frederick Hillstrand, Jr. and Robert B. Hillstrand (my dad and uncle). My dad had 3 daughters and me, and my uncle had a daughter and a son (6 California-born grandchildren). Unfortunately both my dad and uncle passed 2006 and 2008. My dad spoke about having a half sister that lived in Santa Paula, California that passed in the late 90's or there about. He has six grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren branching from my dad and uncle.
I never did meet him, but my oldest sister, Debbie did. I understand grandpa Andy came from Gothenburgh Sweden though New York and promptly went into the military at around age 16 or 17. Grandpa Andy was apparently a champion bicyclist growing up in Sweden. I believe he ended up in the Pacific fighting during the Spanish - American War and was a sniper. I do not have a clue about his life between age 20 and about 48.
Anyway, it would be interesting to exchange what we know about the Hillstrand lineage. I guess I am your half uncle or something like that! Let's chat sometime!
