Title: Relative who traveled to India in 1808

I have recently been researching an ancestor named William Warwick who appeared to live in India and also get married and have two children christened out there. The reason as to why he was there in the first place is still unknown to me, however I recently discovered a record on Fibis which shows that a William Warwick arrived in India (Madras) in 1808 and the date, place and name all seem to match. However, as a non-member of Fibis, I cannot view the record, so I was wondering whether it is possible to find any record of his voyage to India in 1808 bearing in mind findmypast only allows you to search passenger lists from 1890 to 1960?

Do you know anything about your William WARWICK's occupation? Could he have been an army officer, or in the Maritime Service of the East India Company, or an EIC civil servant, or an independent merchant, or a banker, etc.?

If so, any surviving documentation will probably be among the India Office Records at the British Library in London. For example, their online family history database throws up one record for a residence permit in Madras in 1825, which may possibly relate to your man. You can run a search from here ...

Hi,

Yes, I did mean 1808! I have corrected that in the post.

He was a tailor when he died in Pondicherry, India in 1828 which is also the occupation of his son and grandson - a family trade. However, I'm unaware as to why a British man would go to India in order to work as a tailor?! I assumed that this profession would've already been quite popular over there already and if anything surely British people would only be out there at this time for mining or military purposes etc.

Both the British Army and the Indian Army employed military tailors.
