Title: Southcliffe School, Filey. Any info please?
Post by: ainslie on Wednesday 14 August 13 11:03 BST (UK)
An uncle attended this school pre-1914.  Is there anyone with local knowledge who could tell me if it survives (from Googling I suspect not) or when it closed?

Many thanks
Ainslie

Many thanks for the links.  I spent ages going through the first site which was full of diverting information and fine photos, but with no reference to the school that I could find.
I have emailed the museum in case they can help.

I believe the school, was founded in 1896 by Joseph Herbert Daniel, where he reamined until the end of the First World War.

Can't see any newspaper announcements of term dates after September 1932. The Rev A H Gaskell was headmaster from 1920 to 1933.

Gaskell registered title to the property in October 1933 - presumably in contemplation of sale.

I will now know where to look if ever in Filey!  Thanks again,
ADDED:  I have Googled the name of J.H. Daniel which produced an obituary.  He was an old boy of St Peter's, York, and so was my grandfather.  This almost certainly explains why my uncle was sent to a school in Filey.

Looks like the building was still there in 2009, a pub, so you could see inside :)

If anyone is interested, I'm (hopefully) attaching three pictures from 1927, 1928 & 1929 showing all the boys (my father was there)

Wonderful period pieces, but too late for my uncle.

Yes - I'm sorry about that but hoped that others who have been following the post might find something useful - regret they are the only photos I seem to have. Gives you a feel for the way the building looked at the back - suspect little changed in the intervening 12 years?

Hi BeaNich and welcome to RootsChat, I'm sure that anyone who googles the name of the school and are brought here, they will be delighted to see your great photos.

I've read in this thread that the Southcliffe preparatory school for boys, was founded in 1896.  The founder was a Joseph Herbert Daniel.  The school was originally located at numbers 41 to 42 The Crescent, Filey, North Yorkshire.  This makes the founding date appear correct, because these buildings form part of a large grand Victorian terrace, that was constructed by Edwin Martin in 1890.  In 1901 the school had 22 boys, aged 9 to 13.  When Mr Daniel constructed his new purpose built  School, at Primrose Valley, he had 80 boys attending.  Since being a school, the building has been a public house, bar, dance hall and I believe it is presently some sort of store and possibly a staff accommodation block, for the Primrose Valley holiday camp. It may have had other uses previously that I'm unaware of? The photographs I'm posting on this thread are of the original school in Filey and various photos of the building at Primrose Valley, which still survives today.
