Hi, am new on here and not sure what I can ask and where to ask it....
Anyway, my husband thinks his grandmother is buried in a family grave at Harehills Cemetry and we would like to know which other family members are in there. She was Sarah South (1892-1963) and her husband was Benjamin South (1889-1932). Her mother was Kate Walker (1866-1954).
Any help would be appreciated as we live a fair way away from Leeds.
Many thanks.
-
Hi and a very warm welcome to Rootschat.
I have located the burial details of a Benjamin South who died in 1932 and is buried in Harehills Cemetery in Leeds but however the year of death of his wife does not match the year of death which you have of 1963.
Here are the details.
Harehills Cemetery, Leeds
Grave Number 1418, Grave Section L. Grave Type unconsecrated.
11th April 1932 burial of Benjamin South of Leeds aged 43 years, Commission Agent.
19th February 1976 burial of Sarah Elizabeth South of St. George's Hospital, Rothwell aged 84 years.
With regards to Sarah's mother Kate there are two Kate Walker's buried in Harehills Cemetery. One of which has the same year of birth as your Kate's but died in 1958 aged 92 years. She is buried alongside her husband Charles who died in 1952 aged 87 years and their daughter Rosa who died in 1929 aged 34 years.
If you think that this is the Kate Walker you are searching for let me know and I will post the additional details.

Hi and thanks so much for your speedy reply. Think I'm going to like it here!
It's definitely the same family, and I had made a typo with Kate, we have her death as 1958 too. I hadn't found out what happened to Rosa, so thanks for that.
We are a bit perplexed by Sarah though as she definitely died in 1963. I wonder what could have happened?
Thanks again, and any more info would be gratefully received,
Alison

Alison.
I will post the burial details for Kate, Charles and Rose for you. It will take me a few minutes though.

-
Alison,
Here are the burial details as promised.
Harehills Cemetery, Leeds

12th February 1929 burial of Rosa Walker, spinster, aged 34 years.
I am also sending you a personal message which when it arrives you will see a number 1 next to my messages near the top of the page.

Hello, sorry to hijack the post. I was wondering you could help me locate my great grandma, Emily Rowley was Robinson. Apparently she died in September 1978 although I'm not sure if that's going to be right. Thank you x
-
Hi April,
Welcome to RootsChat.
Emily Rowley, age 90, (Widow) died in St James's Hospital, Leeds and was buried in Harehills Cemetery 2nd August 1978. Section G10 unconsecrated grave no. 190 along with 8 unrelated others. There is no monument on the grave.
I think that is the Emily you are searching for but there was another Emily Rowley age 83 years buried in same Cemetery in 1967. Let me know if you want those details.
Regards,
Ian
-
Oh yes that would definitley be her, my Aunty has just confirmed the year of death etc. Thank you very much :) going to take her some flowers when I take some for her son. He would have been 100 this may :). Is there a map of the site anywhere ?

Also I know my grandad is there and where he is, he is Walter Robert Rowley born 1916 died October 90. His dad was also Walter Rowley and I think if his mum and sister are there then he might be too, he would have died before Emily but not too sure when. X
-
I have found 2 Walter Rowley's buried in Harehills Cemetery but not one buried Oct 1990.
Walter Rowley 58 buried 24/4/1936, son in law of Arthur Jeffrey 49, buried 20/8/1912 and his wife Jane Ann Jeffrey buried 24/1/1934. Section C Consecrated grave 567.
Walter Rowley 57, buried 18/11/1947 Unconsecrated grave U2295 along with 7 unrelated others.
If you give me the names of Walter's mother and sister I'll have another look for you.
Don't know if I can add a plan of the Cemetery to this post but if not send me you email address via a Personal Message and I'll forward it by email.

Thank you so much x
-
Hi Carlene,
There are memorial stones on graves 307,306,304,303,299,298, and 291 in Section V1 so if you were planning to visit the Cemetery you should be able to find the location of grave 296. Let me know if you want details of these other graves.

Hi Ian, I'm looking for the grave of my nan at Harehills cemetery. I went today but I couldn't find it, and looking at the plan on the previous page I thought she was in G9. The last time I went the headstone was well worn & getting difficult to read so I suspect that it either became illegible or has fallen over.
Her name was Joan Alexander and she was buried in August 1980. I'd be grateful for any help locating the plot.
Thanks
Andy

Section G10 grave No 338 unconsecrated.

im wanting to check on my grandparents grave as last time i visited the head stone had fallen over. they buried in g9 i think, ruby & ronald carter
-
Hi,
Welcome to RC.
I can't see either of them listed in records I have. Can you give more information as to dates of death.
Ian
-
Ruby carter died 30 November 1990
Ronald carter died 2 June 1994
They buried together
-
Because they a relatively recent deaths is the reason they do not appear in the records I have.
I would suggest you contact Leeds Bereavement Service, Farnley Hall, Hall Lane, Farnley, LS12 5HA. Tel: 0113 3957446.
They will be able to give you details of the location of the grave.

Good Afternoon,
We are desperately trying to find a burial plot of an uncle who passed away in 1951.
His name is Paul Speller (although we suspect it may actually be Adrian P Speller)
He was buried at Harehills Cemetery 1951 and he was a baby.
We just want to find the plot so that we can visit.
Many thanks for any help anybody can give.

Hi
I took a look in the Swedish Church Books and found his birth record and thought it might be interesting to post it.
He was a seaman and signed off in Liverpool on 24 June 1877.

I'm not sure whether this is where I post but here goes. My grandmother Mabl Loughlan (nee Smith) is buried in Harehills cemetery, not sure of plot number but she asked to be buried there as her father is buried there. We think he is in a guinea grave, his name is William Smith and he born on the 16/10/1875 and he died on the 23/02/1939 both in Leeds. Any help with this would be very much appreciated thank you....
-
Welcome to RootsChat!
Yorkshire Indexers have transcribed the Harehills registers, and I've found William Smith - buried 27 Feb 1939, aged 63; grave no. U1/283. It may well be a guinea grave as there are 7 burials there, all from the first few months of 1939, and all with different surnames.
I couldn't find Mabel Loughlan, though. When did she die, and at what age, and did she ever use any other name? (Or did she revert to Mabel Smith? - there were a few of those.)
-
Thank you. Mabel Loughlan (nee Smith) was born on the 07/02/1919 in Leeds and died on the 06/09/1998. I know it is definitely there as I was at the burial lol. I have attached a photo of her plate on her cross..
-
OK, the online records only go as far as 1987, so that's why I couldn't find her. It also means I've no idea if her grave is anywhere near his.
Yorkshire Indexers have a plan which might help you with this, since you already know about hers:
http://www.yorkshireindexers.info/gallery/showimage.php?i=1489&c=85
Some of their content needs you to register and log in (free) before you can see it, but I don't know if it applies to this or not.
-
Looking on maps, it looks like she is either in U1 or U2. I know she wanted to be as near to her dad as she could be. Thank you so much for all your help...
-
You're welcome!
-
If you phone Leeds City Council Bereavement Services and give them her date of death they will be able to give you the burial plot details at Harehills Cemetery.

Hi
Can anyone help me solve a family mystery?
My great grandfather Alfred Gaunt died 4th November 1918 and I'd assumed he was buried with his wife and pre-deceased children in the non-conformist area of Beckett Street cemetery (private plot 17503). Having looked at the records it seems he wasn't buried at Beckett Street.
Any chance he was buried at Harehills cemetery?
Many thanks!
-
Paul,
There is an Alfred GAUNT Buried at Holbeck Cemetery lived at Elford Place, Leeds, Warehouseman. Buried 8th November 1918 aged 73 years. Grave No. General 5935
Also in that Grave are Florence Woffinden (Wife of Alfred Woffinden) and Beatrice Bottomley (Wife of Tom J Bottomley)
