Title: Offer: Cadder Cemetery Transcriptions, Bishopbriggs
Post by: Chris5856 on Wednesday 21 August 13 08:02 BST (UK)
Dear All,

Not daft enough to be transcribing lair books for one cemetery, Ive taken up photographing headstones at my local cemetery, Cadder in Bishopbriggs. Like St Joseph's in Airdrie, I will be transcribing headstone details into a searchable database and making available those photographs to anyone that wants them. Free of course.
So far Ive photographed 370 headstones. Im halfway through transcribing them, from which I have the details of 428 internments. These are mainly from the old part of the cemetery and most internments are around 1904 to 1940's.
Chris

I have now transcribed the details of 3000 from just over 800 stones. This is mainly from the old walled section of the cemetery.

The Facebook Page needs a bit more exposure Ive so far I only have 35 likes.

Hi Chris,

Have you not thought about putting the spreadsheet on a website rather than Facebook?

A lot of people are not fans of Facebook.

Hi Chris,

I'd really appreciate if you could email images of the gravestone for

Agnes Blackwood died 19/03/1939, and Robert Marshall who died 18/09/1937.

Both buried in Cadder cemetery.

Many thanks, Darren.

Chris, there are a couple of outstanding stones in Cadder, one is the Clydesdale horse, mebbes Alexander family (Transport), the other is a pyramid with a strange inscription, "The stone the workmen rejected formed the top of the ?" possibly masonic.

My own folk from Springburn are in there but no stone.

Hi Skoosh,

The Alexander's headstone is very impressive.

Is this the family that ran the buses locally or the coachbuilders?

Im glad to say that after just over one year, 7,723 photographs and the internment details of just over 12,000 people, I have completed my photographic database of Cadder Cemetery headstones.

Ive divided the cemetery into 26 sections and can almost pinpoint any headstone requested for.

I wonder what I'll do next?

Chris

Thanks of that Sarah. Yes I did. Three Canadian RAF men killed on the same day when, their shot up plane returning from Holland didnt make it home and it came down near the Gadloch.

Celtic / Hibs & Motherwell Star Joe McBride.

A policeman that was murdered at Bishopbriggs railway station.

The Cadder mine distaster and many more. Facinating project.  ;D

Hi Chris
I am trying to find a grave for my gg grandfather Robert Aikman who died 3 April 1858 at Auchinairn but his death record states he was buried at Cadder.  His wife was Ann Aikman and she died 17 Feb 1880 at Auchinairn. Just wondering if you had any burial records for them.  Congratulations on such a fantastic job.
Kind regards Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Im afraid the death dates are before Cadder opened. Its probably Cadder Churchyard they are in. East Dunbartonshire Archives hold the lair books. Give them a phone at the Library in Kirky. They will help you. Its a lot easier for them that you have death dates.

Thanks for your kind words

Chris

Hi, I see you have transcribed burial information for John Glass. I'm curious to know if this might be the John Glass who died in 1909 at Gartloch Hospital Asylum.  The death record gives no details of his life! I'd be grateful to know if the cemetery record has any info.  Thanks!

Thank you Chris, for your time and effort, plus all the support on top of it - this is really awesome! I will probably have a couple of questions later, once I sort through the records, but in the meantime: some deaths have **/**/19XX, does it mean that the day/month is illegible due to the age of the stone, or just totally missing from the gravestone? And what about David McDonald with no info at all? Thanks :)

Hi there,

Apologies for the delay. I was on holiday. This John Glass has no death date on the stone. All it says is that he was the husband of Margaret Clarkson who died in 1923. I have another john Glass but he died in 1898.

Hi there.

Sorry for the delay. I was on holiday. If there is an asterix I either cant read it or the stone says that the person died in 1929 or May 1929 etc. Quite often days and months are omitted from the death date on the stone. It just says 1890-1929 or died may 1929.

David was a child that died in infancy, the son of William McDonald & Jessie Clark.

Thanks very much for your kind words.

Hi Chris

Is your spreadsheet available for me to search or do I have to provide you with the info? I have lots of family buried at Cadder and rather than trying to find out all the names/dates to request to you, I thought it would be easier to search myself. My gran passed away last year and she was the one who would've known all the info easily.

Thanks
Claire

Hi Claire.

Sorry for the delay. I'm afraid not, but I'm in dialogue with East Dunbartonshire archives as how to make this information searchable. In the meantime I'm happy to search for you.

Hi Chris,

Just came across your records on this site... great job, well done. Do you have any other Grahams on your database apart from CHARLES GRAHAM, 30/07/1932. I'm looking for ancestors from further back
around 1840-1880s.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks in advance

Hi Chris,

You’ve taken on a massive workload - well done. Can I take up your good offer and ask your assistance in hopefully finding the resting place of an important person in my family tree?

I have a relation who lived in Chryston, Cadder for over forty years until his death in 1962. His birth name was Thomas Duffy which he later opted to change to Thomas Duthie. He first worked as the school janitor at Chryston School and later a School Attendance Officer.

He was born in 1872 - died 1962 - age 90.

He married a Williamina Nimmo who died in 1946.

Kind regards,

Robert McKenzie.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for replying. My request was a long shot. I had looked through your list of deceased and Duffy, Duthie, Nimmo wasn’t listed. Sorry for taking up your time. You’re providing an excellent service, much appreciated.

Regards,

Robert.

Hi Chris, I'm looking for a William Jackson Smith Oct 1947 - Dec 1996. (was known as Jack) I wonder if you see him in your  Cadder Cemetery Transcriptions?

Many thanks for your help.

Have you not thought about putting the spreadsheet on a website rather than Facebook?
Or, even better, contribute to something like the Gravestone Photographich Recource? https://www.gravestonephotos.com/

Hi there- I am really interested in finding out if this is the John Paterson I am trying to find.
He's in your list as
JOHN   PATERSON   13/01/1954
Do you by any chance have a photograph of this grave?

I would be so grateful to see if it's the right one.

Fingers crossed.

I really appreciate your efforts on Cadder Chris ...you don't mention my great, great grandparents John Morrison and Charlotte Wright whom I know are buried there, I have personally seen their gravestones in Cadder, did you not see them? Regards, Lindsay

Hi Chris,

What an amazing project to have undertaken!  I've recently been given a load of family papers and come across 2 Cadder lair certificates for my great great grandparents and great grandparents and wondered if you had come across them.  They are Robert Rice and Mary Muir and David Muir Rice and Jane (Jean) Bowman. There is also a distant cousin, Robina Muir.  Many thanks for any help you can offer.

Jo
