Elizabeth Buckley (nee Bradbury) was my gg grandmother. Her first husband - my gg grandrather - William Buckley died about 1847, and some years later she married his brother Richard. Elizabeth died in July 1889 and I have located her grave in Wrenbury Churchyard, she is buried with Richard, but I have no idea where William is buried. The problem is there seems to be more than one William Buckley around that area at that particular time. I was wondering if there is anyone else out there tracing this part of my family.

Hi
What year was William born. I note from her death reg that Elizabeth Sarah Buckley was b 1817
-
There is a William Buckley burial on 4.5.1846 at St Margaret Wrenbury - he was 41
-
and some years later she married his brother Richard
Was this in 1854? If so - see this marriage entry from Family Search. Elizabeth is shown as single and her father is Buckley - not Bradbury

It's a bit puzzling really when you read the 1851 and 1861 entries
1851 for Lower House Farm Newhall Cheshire
Thomas Buckley 47 unmarried farmer b Wrenbury
Richard Buckley 38 brother unmarried ditto
Elizabeth Buckley 34 sister in law - widow b Newcastle under Lyne Staffs
William Buckley 6 nephew b Nantwich

1861 for Lower House Farm Newhall Cheshire
Thomas Buckley 57 farmer unmarried b Wrenbury
Richard Buckley 48 married - brother
Elizabeth Buckley 44 married - sister in law b Newcastle Staffs
Fanny Buckley 17 niece b Nantwich
Ellen Buckley 7 niece b Audlem

And parents marriage

BUCKLEY William

So everything ties up except marital status and fathers surname on the 1854 marriage cert

Carole, thanks so much for the reply. That must be my William Buckley who is buried in Wrenbury. I have looked there on a few occasions but not found his grave, however, there are several members of the family there so I always suspected he was there but I haven't access to any burial records. As regards the re-marriage, yes that is the correct record you found but the information is incorrect. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Preston Bradbury and she was born in 1817. I've often wondered if it was legal to marry your late husband's brother in those days, perhaps that was why they married at Chester and made her out to be single! Just seen your other post, Fanny Buckley was my g grandmother and in the 1861 Census, she was living with her mother (Elizabeth Sarah), step-father (Richard) and brother (William). Elizabeth was a sister-in-law to Richard's older brother Thomas. It gives her status as married but in the 1851 census she is a widow. Bet I've made it sound even more confusing!!

Hi
Bet I've made it sound even more confusing!!
The 1851 made sense as she was a widow at that time
The 1861 made sense if she married Richard in 1854
On both occasions she was correctly shown as sister in law to Thomas who was the head of the household.
It was (and still is) legal to marry your sister in law so no offence was being committed when they married
The only bits that don't make sense is her marital status on the 1854 marriage - should be widow and her fathers name should be Bradbury. Perhaps whoever married them assumed her fathers surname was Buckley
I wonder where daughter Fanny was in 1851
-
I think Fanny was staying with her grandparents William and Elizabeth Bradbury in 1851. I have just found a website www.genetic-genealogy.co.uk where it tells you who you can legally marry and apparently a list of forbidden marriages was drawn up by the Church of England in 1560 and remained until the 20th Century, when it was changed. On the list it does say "Husband's Brother".

It is interesting that the marriage in Chester took place on 18th Jan 1854 - Richard gave his residence and occupation as "Farmer of Audlem" - father William Buckley, Farmer
Elizabeth was a spinster age 36 living in Foregate Street, Chester - father William Buckley, Land Agent.
On 25th Jan 1854 Ellen Buckley was baptised at Audlem - dau of Elizabeth Buckley of Newhall, widow.
It seems that the vicar was not willing to recognise Richard as Ellen's father.
-
Ellen's birth was registered in the March qtr of 1854 so Elizabeth had just given birth when she married Richard
I wonder if his name is on her birth cert

? ???

Hi
Until 1907, it was illegal to marry your husband's brother.

Thanks to you all for your input, I was totally unaware of Ellen's existence, although I don't know why because I've found her on the 1861 census, which I've looked at before!! I should imagine there would have been some raised eyebrows in 1854 at Elizabeth's predicament. It's interesting that the marriage details give her father's occupation as a land agent because he was a land agent, but his name was William Preston Bradbury.
