Title: ORR FAMILY County Down
Post by: alf on Wednesday 15 June 05 12:49 BST (UK)
I am researching the ORR family of Killinchy, County Down
and would like to make contact with any person who may be connected or can help in any way.

The ORR's that I am interested in came from or has a connection with the following areas. Rainey Island, Ballydrain, Killinchy, Killmood and the Dufferin Arms, Killyleagh & Craigarusky

Just a small family tree
David ORR, DOB 26 July 1839, at Craigrusky married Catherine McCormick born May 1860 on Island Rainey, married at Killinchy Presbyterian Church abt 1885

They had several children

David, born 28 Dec 1891 at Craigrusky and he married Mary Frame from Killinchy and they were married at the same church
they owned and ran the Dufferin Arms, Sheila and Katherine both died of a heart attack in the same room.

James, born 25 Dec 1888, at Craigarusky married Roseanne McCune of Kilmood, born 26 April 1883, and were marrried 1907, Killinchy

Alf:
If you haven't already, you might want to check Ros Davies'excellent site for Down. She has an extensive listing of Orrs. There are also maps which can help locate townlandsfor you. I am sure you will get some leads. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/Orr.htm

Another site is Caora where you can see head-of-household listings for the 1901 census in Down. http://www.caora.net/find.php

Good luck!

That is correct, May, wife of late Harold Orr, cousin of mine

Could I asked, do you live near to Killinchy Presbyterian Non Subscribing because I am after a favor. I now live in England, and I was not into family history when I lived in Castlereagh. I am  looking for some one to do the Monumental Inscriptions for each of  the Orr Graves in the Churchyard. there are not many Do not to worry if you can not do it

Barbara

Hi,

Catherine McCormick was a sister of my Gt. Grandfather.

As the Orr and McCormick families were members of the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church in Killinchy (not the Presbyterian Church) the marriage record for David and Catherine will be in the records of that congregation.

Here are the details off the family gravestone from Clarke's Gravestone inscriptions.  There was at least one burial since - Wm. I think he died in the late 1970s but can confirm the exact date.

Killinchy Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Graveyard:

ORR

[In a low railed enclosure,]

In loving memory of Catherine Orr, wife of David Orr, Craigarusky, who died 16th Jan. 1917 aged 58 years
Also their daugther Elizabeth, who died 20th July 1898 aged 13 years.
Also the above David Orr who died 23rd Feb. 1933 aged 94 years.
Also their son Henry who died in Canada 5th June 1954, result of wounds received during 1914-18 war.
Also their son Robert S. who died in Canada 8th Aug. 1965. And his wife Verna, died in Canada 7th Dec. 1962.
Also their son Joseph, died 3rd April 1972. Also his wife Ida, died in U.S.A. 7th Nov. 1962.

The major source for researching ORRS in the County Down is Ray A. Jones "Ulster Pedigrees. Descendants, in Many Lines, of James Orr and Janet McClement, Who Emigrated from Scotland to Northern Ireland ca. 1607". The title says it all! Jones's book is based on the ORR family-trees drawn up in the 1830s by Gawn Orr of Castlereagh (they were mainly based on headstone inscriptions) and deposited in the Linen Hall library in Belfast. I wrote an article about my own researches which was published in 1988 in FAMILIA, and I counted no fewer than 501 separate surnames in the index to the above book, making it a priceless resource for Co. Down genealogy, especially as many of the headstones read by Gawn Orr have since disappeared.  All the names mentioned in postings on this thread, e.g. McCune, McCormick, Frame, are in there somewhere.

Just wondering if you have any information on William Boyce who married Mary McCune in 1857.   I believe his father was James Boyce, mother unknown, and his brother was John boyce who married Eliza Wallace (my GGG grandparents.

I don't have any information on BOYCE, but the Orr Pedigrees book mentions a family called McCUNE - no dates, I'm afraid. Hugh McCUNE of Braniel married Mary BLACK of Gortrib and their children were William, James, Hugh, Mary, John, Elizabeth and Robert.

Hello,
I've discovered that looking for Orrs in Ireland or Scotland is like looking for Smith families in England.
My interest in the Orr family stems from my Grandfather's employer, Thomas Orr in Lower Hutt, near Wellington, NZ. The Orr family owned a large parcel of land & a (now Historic Trust) large home in Lower Hutt.

When my Gr Father migrated from Kilkeel Co. Down he straight away found work as a market gardener with Orrs. The Patriarch, Robert Orr migrated to NZ in the late 1800s. I have been trying to connect this Orr family to Co. Down, to find the reason why my Grandparents chose NZ over USA, where Grandfather's siblings migrated to. I have a recent posting on this Forum, under the New Zealand section.

The only information I require is Robert Orr's (b abt.1852 - d 1932) birthplace, or record of migration.
Thanks, Valsgirl

I have a GG Grandmother who was Margaret Orr (b between 1815 and 1826). Said born in County Antrim to a David Orr and Catherine. She married my GG Grandfather John McMullan in Downpatrick, Down in 1845 at St Margaret's (Church of Ireland). They had a Son, Arthur McMullan also baptized at St Margaret's in 1845. (Note: Revised info as of 6/5/2011:  A researcher in Ireland has found a new record of this marriage, and it happened at the Church of Ireland Cathedral in Downpatrick, and the date was actually May 2, 1844 not 1845. There were 2 witnesses at the marriage, a Daniel Hurst & a William George Hurst who was also a shoemaker. )

They were said to have lived in Belfast at one time? They emigrated to Quebec between 1845 and 1847.

Would love to know more about any!!

Thanks!!  Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

Dear Tom,
I have no reason to disbelieve what you say, and therefor we are surely related. Margaret Ann Malone Maried Thomas John McMullan in Downpatrick Church of Ireland on 18thJune 1918. Margaret was born 23.09.1892 and died 06.12.1979 while Thomas was born 01.05.1876 and died 31.08.1965.Both are buried in the family plot in the Parish Church where they were married. Margaret Ann was my Grandfathers younger sister. Grandad (Samuel Walmsley Malone) was born 10.10.1889. Hope to hear from you soon cousin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Richard Malone

Hello,

Any chance of some help please, I have Thomas Orr 1837 Ireland & Matilda Orr 1845 Ireland.

I found the following marriage on an old cached website: a pictorial history by Derek Beattie - Stevenson Family www.newtownards.info/family-stevenson.htm.

"Stevenson, Matilda - 12th. July 1867 - {Father John Stevenson a weaver} - Married Thomas Orr - {Father William Orr a shoemaker} Witnessed by James and Margaret Dalzell"

Thomas and Matilda appear to of had a their first son William John Orr in 1870 Devonport, Plymouth, Devonshire, England.

I'm Struggling to locate Thomas and his father William and Matilda and her father John in the 1841 census.

Any information or pointers regarding researching this family would be much appreciated.

Regards

Adrian

Son William John was baptised 1869-

The first complete census for Ireland is 1901- only fragments of earlier ones for a few places survive.

Thank you Aghadowey,

How would I go about trying to locate Thomas orr, I am sure he was born 1837 in Newtownards, Down, as this is shown in his military records and I think his family were Presbyterian, And I have his fathers name from the marriage, but what I don't know is how and where to find records pulling this together?

Only 'birth record' will be his baptism (if it exists but many records not online).
