Afternoon,

I was wondering if anybody would be kind enough to perform a lookup for the following record andme and inform me of any information contained within please?

As stated above it's a lookup within the Merchant Navy Seamen [1835-1941] and the subject I am interested in is:

Name: Hughes, Stephen
Year of Birth: 1898
Discharge No. 867279
Place of birth: Liverpool, Lancashire

Any information that could be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Paul

I can't help with your look-up but I have modified your request.

Please remember that you must not ask for look-ups from commercial sources.
Most commercial sources have strict 'Terms of Use', which forbid publishing their data elsewhere, so asking for such look-ups is also asking people to ignore the 'Terms of Use'.

There isn't a huge amount of information there but there is a photo so it's worth taking a look. The birthdate given is 31 January if that helps tie it down, and there are ship numbers for two voyages in 1920 and 1921 from which you could trace the ship names and routes.

He has no WW1 medal card and as far as I can tell did not serve in WW2.

Bingo, that's my man  :)

Apologies Dawn - duly noted.

Shaun/Seaweed - many thanks.

Interesting that there does not appear to be any WW1 MIC as family legend recalls that his ship was torpedoed and that he very nearly went down with it, after foolishly funning back into the ship to retrieve some personal effects.

Perhaps that's just a tale he conjured up....

He joined his brother and uncle in Chicago circa 1920's, never to return to Liverpool and I'm not aware that he served durring WW2.

The reason he has no WW1 medal file held in BT 351 (Merchant Navy) is because during WW1 he was serving with the Mercantile Marine Reserve (MMR). His medal file therefore is held in ADM 117/131.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

You will maybe have noticed my typo in post #5. It should of course have been ADM 171/131 not ADM 117. Senior moments happening more and more :)
