Title: 1841 Census status
Post by: Maggiemck on Wednesday 26 February 14 08:11 GMT (UK)
I am looking at the 1841 census at the family of a Donald McKenzie. Found one who looks good in Badidaroch with his family. The names of the children look good. I've got quite a bit of information on the family now. Donald is given as 60 years old and the children are listed as
Murdo Mckenzie   20
John Mckenzie   15
Rodk Mckenzie   15
Janet Mckenzie   13

The names Murdo John and Janet were all known to me and tie in well. Roderick I wasn't aware of. I notice he's the same age as John so either they are twins or one of them is about to turn 16 pretty sharpish or he's a relative.

I can't see any relationship status on the record and not sure if I'm just missing it. I have looked on ancestry and freecen and can't see relationship status for the people named on the census. I wonder if anyone would know if this information was on the 1841 census. I also would like to know Donald's status ie whether he is a widow. Thanks for any help.

Some notes re the 1841 census:

1. Adult ages (i.e. 15 and above) were rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.
So John and Roderick were aged between 15 and 19!
2. There was no "relationship to head of house".
3. There was no marital status. Only name, sex, age, occupation, and whether born in county.

Hi ,

The instruction given to the Census takers was to round down the ages of anyone over 15 to the nearest 0 or 5 , however that instruction was not followed by all.

The 1841 census is the first useful genealogical census for England & Wales. You will see that no relationships are given - except occasionally in column 5 where you may see Farmer's Wife or similar.

They may not be all Donalds Children, some may be Grandchildren.

There are several possible Christenings for them in Assynt on Familysearch.Org.
Also several possible Marriages for John 1801 onwards

Trish :)
