Title: James Williamson born c1781
Post by: aidansrest on Monday 05 May 14 12:44 BST (UK)
Hi,

Can anybody find a baptism for a James Williamson, born c1781 in Shetland?

The James that I am interested in was a mariner and married a Mary Steel in Sunderland on the 28th December 1802. Mary had been born in Sunderland on the 27th November 1785.

All his children were baptised in Monkwearmouth and I believe he and Mary can be found in 1841 living in Sunderland (Robinson Lane) where James indicates that he had been born in the county of Durham.
Again, I believe that I have found James on the 1851 census living in Trafalgar Square (almshouses for retired seaman and their wives/widows) where once again he claims to have been born in Sunderland.

However, I have found many references/family trees belonging to other researchers who have his place of birth as Shetland, but don't appear to have any evidence of this.

Could anyone confirm, one way or another, as to where he may have been born?

Thanks

Sue
