Post by: wildswan on Saturday 12 July 14 06:39 BST (UK)
Is there anyone who can help with this MARRIAGE please?  Are there any Parish Registers or Banns online where I can see who the parents of both these people are?   Or can someone please help with a look-up maybe someone has a disk or something with these marriages.  Thank you very much.  TRISH

I found the couple on the 1911 census. So, using their ages and birthplaces from that:

1901 census: Class: RG13; Piece: 580; Folio: 80; Page: 27
35 Clarence Road, Sutton, Surrey

Hooper, William E  Head  M  65  Labourer  b Sutton
Hooper, Emily  Wife  F  58  b Ewhurst
Hooper, William J  Son  M  21  Carpenter  b Sutton
Hooper, Alice  Daughter  F  18  Pupil Teacher  b Sutton
King, William  Visitor  M  26  Blacksmith  b Brighton, Sussex
King, Emily  Visitor  F  22  b Alperton, Middlesex

Can't see anything for May Young Pilbeam - not even a birth registration! :-\

No I can’t find a Birth for May Young PILBEAM either, I have a May Young 'Nurse child' listed with a family in the 1881 census. The family is Alfred GALE and Harriet and her children named PILBEAM she was a widow and remarried an Alfred GALE and they had children together they are on the 1881 census together with GALE children and a PILBEAM child and this May Young Nurse child.  Since seeing this Census I have been trying to work out who this May Young is ‘nurse child’ is she an illegitimate child of one of the PILBEAM girls?  Or a relatives child whom Harriet is wet nursing. Harriet has a pone year old son on the same census and the Nurse child May young is 1 year old as well.  I am wondering if the marriage I found for May Young PILBEAM to William John HOOPER is in fact this ‘Nurse Child’ May young ?

That is William J  HOOPER on the 1901 Census thank you.  I have all the census for him before he married and after he married.

The marriage was in Epsom Registration district. This RD consists of 16 parishes!
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/epsom.html

My guess would be that they married in Sutton? But that only cuts the list to 3 churches, plus the possibility of a Register Office marriage?! ;D ::)

The Parish Registers are currently held at Sutton Heritage, Central Library, St Nicholas Way, Sutton.

IMHO paying £9.25 for the GRO marriage certificate is probably the best option! ;D

Another member, kerryb, is researching the Pilbeam name so she may be able to help you.

Hi

Unfortunately these Pilbeams don’t appear on my tree.  Mine are all in the Dallington area of East Sussex.  I agree with KGarrad, your best bet to find her father at least, is to order the marriage certificate.  You never know there may be a clue amongst the witnesses too.

The marriage is available in Sutton, St Nicholas Marriages. Unfortunately May's father is given as " Unknown". She was 23 and at the same address as William John Hooper. Both witnesses are named Hooper.

This may be relevant :

1881 census
at 21 William Road, Sutton

Alfred Gale 36
Harriet Gale 45
Jane Pilbeam 19
Harriet Pilbeam 12
John J Pilbeam 10
Ralph Gale 7
Ruth L Gale 6
Mark Gale 1
May Young 1 Nurse Child  - this entry has been  user corrected to Fanny Fowkes

??

Edit - I think the correction should be May Fowkes , whose mother was Fanny - at least that is the suggestion.

Following on with May Young / Fowkes , here is 1891 census suggestion :

in Carshalton, Surrey

Thomas Fowkes 31
Fanny Fowkes 33          ( marriage Thomas Fowkes and Fanny PILBEAM 3 1878 Epsom 2A 34 )
Mary Fowkes 12 dau
Mary Fowkes 11 dau  b Sutton - I think this reads May , not Mary
George Fowkes
Thomas Fowkes
Louisa Fowkes

I'm still not sure about this and how it fits together.

EDIT : in 1881 Fanny and Thomas Fowkes and daughter Mary aged 2 are next door to Alfred Gale and family , where May Young is a nurse child.

Thank you Christine & everyone else, it is a long time since I used RootsChat and I have forgotten how to reply to the individual people.  Thanks everyone for your replys ,
I’ll check the 1891 Census again.  I know the FOWKES family were part of my family.  Wonder who wrote FOWKES on the census was it a person called DAY?
I have purchased the Marriage certificate as Kerryb suggested and No Father [UNKNOWN]  She is May Young PILBEAM on the Marriage.
Interestingly one of the HOIOPER children has Young as her second christian name.
Checking the 1881 census again see if I can see anything that stands out with the person who put the FOWKES name on it.
Thanks everyone.
I hope to be able to work out individual replies somehow.
