Hello everyone, This is my first attempt on this site, it would be wonderful if someone could help me with some info. I am researching my great grandfather Alexander Webster from Fraserburgh c1841-1913. One of his daughters Elizabeth (1870-1949) was my grandmother, but I would love to find out a little of his other children - Alexander, William, John, Elsie, Frederick, Peter and Gordon all born in Fraserburgh. He was an artist as it seems were all of his family.
-
hi,,the censuses show he was a Painter,,not an artist...one census describes him as "house painter". ;)
-
Yes, he was a house painter/decorator, but also quite a well known artist both in NE Scotland and America, as it seems were some of the sons, which makes me wonder if some of the family emigrated to America. :)
-
Hi witchell
I am the great great granddaughter of gordon webster. We are looking into our tree now. My understanding was alexander was a landscape painter. So was one of his sons. I had heard something about someone emigrating to usa. Also that one of them died falling into the sea whilst trying to paint on the rocks. There are a number of alexanders throughout the family. Gordon goes on to fight in the wars in the navy and apparently survived a shipwreck. Its all a bit uncertain at the moment as im getting this info third hand and not got the full story at the moment. Any info you have would also be greatly appreciated

Hi, and a Welcome from me too. ;D
hi,,the censuses show he was a Painter,,not an artist...one census describes him as "house painter". ;)
A painter/house painter by day, but an artist by night. A census as informative as it is, doesn't
reveal all.....
At the Fraserburgh Library there is a reading room dedicated to the "Webster Family" of artists.
The plaque reads
"The room is named after a remarkable Fraserburgh family. Alexander Webster (1841-1913) was a painter and decorator to trade, but gained a reputation as a skilled painter of landscape and coastal scenes, in oils and water colours. At least six of his sons were to inherit his artistic skills......."
From a YouTube clip, you can see some of their art work at the Library, the plaque, and also a snippet of the family tree.

Hi, My name is Gordon Webster. I am also descended from the Webster Fraserburgh Artists. Lawrence McLay Webster was my Grandfather. I would be happy to get in touch with any of the people on this forum. I am new to the forum and am still trying to find my way around. I have found this site to be extremely helpful in confirming some of the facts that I was unsure about and also for giving me much more information.

Hi Gordon, and Welcome to Rootschat :)
The posters "witchill" and "speckle22" with the Webster family connection haven't been active recently, but I have sent them a PM (Personal Message) to advise them of your reply.
If you wish to contact either of them privately, you can use the Personal Message system. You need
to make one more post to activate yours. Then just click on the green (when active) scroll thingy under their names.
If you have any other questions about the Webster family, feel free to add onto this post and someone
should come along and try to help. Just a caution.. Rootschat has a "no living person" rule, no one
living can be named in a post. If you haven't already found it, this is the "How to use Rootschat"
post, which may be of help to you.

Cheers, and enjoy the forum :)

Hi, Thanks for that. I'm not sure where the Fraser connection comes in, or was it perhaps just an error on your part.
Thnks again for your reply

Hello Gordon. Im a little lost with tracking the family. A family friend is doing it for us at the moment. Any info is great x
-
I have acquired to my custody a portrait of a Fraserburgh Parish Minister (1861-87).
The rear of the canvas appears to have what looks like “A Webster” on the rear.
While I was aware that the Webster’s did landscape painting, is there any record of them as portrait painters?
-
Hi, yes Alexander WEBSTER Snr did indeed paint portraits. According to my father (his grandson) he was in great demand to paint portraits of the local skippers. I myself have a small portrait he did of my aunt who was his grand daughter.
-
Excellent. I’ve always wanted a Webster. :-D
It’s a large portrait of Rev McLaren - probably the most powerful clergyman the town ever had.
