Title: Lucy (Louie) & John Kelso, Belfast
Post by: Jolene1987 on Thursday 18 September 14 12:10 BST (UK)
Hi

I know this might be a long shot but I am looking to trace or find out more about the Kelso family.  I know it's not a hugely popular name in Belfast so hoping someone might know something.

Lucy Black (aka Louie) married John Kelso on 29 December 1914.  Lucy's parents were James and Lucinda and the family were from Cambrai Street, Belfast.

John Kelso was from Roseleigh Street and at time of marriage was a loom moulder.

I can't find any children but there is a family story that she may have adopted her niece's (Irene) children but I can't seem to track down Irene either although I know one of her kids was Ernie Johnston.

Any help would be great

Thank you

Hi Jolene1987,

Do you have any other information?  For example approx year of birth for Ernie Johnston.

John Kelso was from Roseleigh Street

So did you look at the Irish Census for 1901 and 1911?
Start with John Kelso, in 1911 there are John Kelso’s living in Ballygomartin Road, Byron Place, Conlig Street, Disraeli Street, Hillview Street, Hillview Street, Regent Street, Woodvale Street .These are Belfast Co Antrim, there is one in Belfast Co Down in Lomond Avenue with another quantiy outside of Belfast.

The only families containing a James and Lucinda as parents that I could find in 1911 in Cambrai ST  were at No 69 the Quail family Is that right?  There two other Lucindas living in the st.

Hi,
I think that the John Kelso living in Hillview Street is the correct one. The John kelso who married Lucy had a father who was also called John and the John in Hillview St was described as an iron moulder.

Regards

Thanks guys

I will have a look at Hillview Street and check that out later - that's a great help!

in 1911 Lucy was living at 62 Cambrai Street with her family, I have her info for 1901 and 1911 but I am really stuck on finding out if John and Lucy had children but I guess that is harder to find.

The 1914 marriage is on
Emerald ancestors, but Kelso births stop earlier
Familysearch.com has two marriages
John Kelso
Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958
marriage:   October 1914 / December 1914   Belfast, Ireland

John Long Kelso
Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958
marriage:   January 1914 / March 1914   Belfast, Ireland

and some sad early baby or childhood deaths for the name John Kelso
John Kelso
Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958
birth:   1916
death:   July 1916 / September 1916   Belfast, Ireland

John Kelso
Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958
birth:   1916
death:   April 1919 / June 1919   Belfast, Ireland

John Kelso
Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958
birth:   1917
death:   October 1919 / December 1919   Belfast, Ireland

I am entering a timescale 1914- in which I dont have experience in looking for births.
The way forward is either General Register Office (NI) ie  GRONI which has Registration indexes Eg births registered from 1 January 1864 in what is now Northern Ireland. It also maintains a public search room where you can search computerised indexes. The index provides name, date and place of event. BUT it has restrictions OR if you can find out if they had a church wedding, that church might also record births
So over to other sand yourself. Good luck JimG

Am also looking for Kelso relations.  Would your Kelso line have lived near Ballarat in the late 1800s?  Have a John Kirk Kelso, son of Edward and Matilda (McCombe) c1852, born either Antrim Town, County Antrim, or Donaghadee, County Down.

Edward c1827 was half-brother to my gggf, Hessie Kelso c1823.

Thanks very much for checking.

Edward Kelso married Matlda McCombe in 1852 Larne district. Eventually the scanned image of civil register will be online on Irish Genealogy site (free)- supposed to be added in November but update to site seems to be delayed.

Thanks for the update Aghadowey, good to know.  Do you have specifics on what records will be updated when they do eventually come out?

**The General Register Office are currently working on updating further records of Marriages dating back to 1845 and Deaths dating back to 1864. These will be included in future updates to the records available on the website.

This is I think your Kelso line:- https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kelso-697

I am in the process of updating this line on Wikitree.  There are quite a few births and marriages to be added.

Robert Kelso had a son called John.  Robert and John's occupation was carpenter.  John Kelso had a son called John.  When the son married, his father's name was stated as John and his father's occupation was stated as carpenter.  They all link back to Robert Kelso and his first wife Mary Gourley.  I will add the relevant certificates to the Wikitree records in due course.

Checking this address in 1918 on lennon Wylie directory shows a James Black, Carter living there
