Title: Kinrosshire birth look up please-Alexander Greig
Post by: techgal on Saturday 29 November 14 20:50 GMT (UK)
I have been trying unsuccessfully to find the parents of Alexander Malcolm Greig.  He was born (or christened) 11 Feb 1819 in Kinrosshire, Scotland.  I have not been able to find a town.  He immigrated to America April 7, 1841 and may have been traveling with a William Greig.  Nothing is mentioned on his death record, immigration or naturalization papers.  I don't know if William is a brother or cousin.  Any help or leads are appreciated.  Thank you :)  Alexander did have children named Andrew, Isabella, John and William.

Thank you everyone for the help.  His grave stone is 1819 and his naturalization states 1819, so I believe this is the correct birthdate.  Does anyone have records to the actual Portmoak records to see if he is listed in the 1819 births and belong to Andrew and Isabel?

Hi techgal

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Unfortunately, this period that you are looking at is before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855. Before this, you are reliant on the Old Parish Registers (OPRs). Only about a third of births, marriages and deaths/burials were registered in this period (deaths/burials the worst of all).

I think the family being discussed by buckhind and ev look like really strong possibilities. Not all births may show where you find some possibilites for a family. Registers for areas/parishes have different time periods for example. Not all may have survived over time.

I think the entries mentioned by buckhind are early. Alexander's one, if he belonged to this family, is some nearly 10 years later. The OPR may be a different ledger...

What was Alexander and William's occupation in Canada? The Greigs that show for this group in the early censuses look to have been weavers. However, occupations changed with the challenges faced with migration...

Hello techgal,
Re: post by buckhind.  Alexander Greig, born Portmoak, Kinross-shire, 29th Sept,1821 was my 2xG.Grandfather. He married Mary Reid, 1858 in Edinburgh. They had 3 children, all born at Portmoak. William Greig 1858-1922 (My G.Grandfather). Mary Barclay Greig 1865-1885 & Janet McGregor Greig 1867-1932. Alexander died 1892 at Portmoak age 70yrs. My 2xG.Grandmother, Mary Reid died 1902 at Portmoak age 73yrs.
Alexander's parents, (my 3xG.Grandparents) William Greig & Janet McGrigor/McGregor, married December 1815 at Portmoak. Janet died 1863 at Portmoak age 76yrs. She was living with her father, William McGrigor, on the 1841 Census so assume William Greig, a weaver, died before then. So, not the family you are looking for.

If you have listed Alexander Malcolm Greig's children in the order they were born, then it is possible that Andrew is named after Alexander's father. (1st son named after father's father).
While I was working on my own tree I came across the family that 'ev' mentions in her reply. I have a bit of information on them but please bear in mind there are a lot of Greigs & Malcolms in the Kinross area and this is only one of perhaps many possibilities.

Marriage: Andrew Greig & Isobel Malcolm married 13th Oct,1803 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Isobel was the daughter of Peter Malcolm, Carter of Orwell Parish, Kinross-shire.

Births: Only found 2 births for this couple (ScotlandsPeople & FamilySearch)
     Sarah Greig b 22nd Nov, baptized 13th Dec, 1807 at Portmoak, Kinross-shire.
Peter Greig  b 31st Dec, 1809 at Portmoak.

Death: (Children and their ages & if deceased are all listed on this 1855 DC)
Andrew Greig, Hand loom Weaver, died 3rd Oct, 1855 at Kinnesswood, Portmoak age 76yrs.
Married to Isabel Greig ms Malcolm deceased.
Son of Andrew Greig, Agricultural Labourer (Ag Lab) & Isabel Greig ms Jackson.
Informant: Andrew Greig, Son. Burial: Church Yard, Portmoak.
     Children are:
Andrew,    age 49.             (born abt 1806)
          Sarah,      age  47.            (born Dec.1807)
          Peter,   died 1812             (born Dec.1809)
Isabel,  died 1849 age 37  (born abt 1812)
Janet,       age 40.             (born abt 1815)
William,    age 37.             (born abt 1818)
Alexander age 35.             (born abt 1820)
John         age 33.             (born abt 1822)

1841 Census. (dated 6-7th June, 1841) Kinnesswood, Portmoak, Kinross-shire. (Ancestry)
Andrew Greig 60 Hand Loom Weaver b Kinross-shire.
     Isabel Greig   60            -                 b         "
Andrew Goul  10                              b         "         (Youl on 'evs' post)

          1851 Census. Kinnesswood, Portmoak, Kinross-shire.
Andrew Greig,  Head   72 Weaver          b Portmoak, Kinross-shire.
Andrew Brown, G.Son 14 Weaver (App) b Markinch, Fife.
     Andrew Greig,  G.Son  14     "         "     b Portmoak, Kinross-shire.

Oldest son Andrew Greig married Mary More, 16th Jan, 1835 at Portmoak.
Daughter Sarah Greig married John Yule 16th Aug,1828, Portmoak, 29th Aug, St Andrews, Fife.

Can't find all my notes but I think I managed to track most of the family apart from sons William & Alexander so the possibility is there. Hope other Rootchatters can add to that information.

               Regards,     Dod.

Dod, lucky 1855 find for the death of Andrew, listing all of Andrew & Isabel's children  :) So, the William Greig mentioned at the beginning, could have been Alexander's brother then.

Hello techgal etc,
1855 Certificates are a fantastic find. Found that DC last year while working on my tree. I was checking out the Greig/Malcolm relationship because my late mother, maiden name Greig, had Malcolm as one of her middle names. No relatives on her maternal side named Malcolm, either surname or given name. Wondered if it had been passed down on the paternal Greig side. Thought Andrew Greig (married to Isabel Malcolm) and my 3xG.Grandfather William Greig might be related but there were too many Greig & Malcolm families in the Kinross area with the names William, Alexander & Andrew so I gave up. (For now!) Luckily the 1855 DC & OPR Marriage were still in my 'Viewed Images' on ScotlandsPeople.

Yes, Monica, I feel these 2 are brothers. Whether they are the sons of Andrew Greig & Isabel Malcolm might be hard to prove unless 'techgirl' can track down Death Certificates for both Alexander & William to see if parents are named. Did Alexander's children have middle names? They sometimes give a clue.
Look forward to hearing from you.
               Regards,     Dod.

...Nothing is mentioned on his death record, immigration or naturalization papers.  I don't know if William is a brother or cousin...

Unfortunately, no reference to parents it seems on Alexander's US documents, except for his birth date on his gravestone which provides a hard fact for him...but we haven't found a corresponding hard fact back in Scotland to compare to so far.

Not clear whether we have the same problem for William Greig's details in the US?

Hello,
I have now found several trees on Ancestry mistakenly naming my 3xG.Grandparents, William Greig & Janet McGrigor as the parents of Alexander Malcolm Greig. Some have posted the Marriage of Alexander M Greig & Grace Olson, on 30th March, 1848 in America, then show 1851 Scotland Census with my 2xG.Grandfather, Alexander Greig, Hand Loom Weaver, still living at Portmoak with his mother Janet, while his father, William Greig, is now a Watchmaker living in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire!!
Nothing, so far, to say Alexander M Greig was born in Kinross-shire. Any reference to him just says born Scotland. Hope 'techgal' had a more reliable source of information than someones tree.
               Regards,     Dod.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!  thanks everyone for all of the information.  I really feel that Alexander and William are the sons of Andrew Greig and Isabel Malcolm.  The birth years match up pretty close based in the listing of Andrew's death record.  I will try to locate the children of Alexander's middle names and post them here.

Like you I'm fairly certain that Alex & Willie are the sons of Andrew & Isabel.
Admittedly It is all circumstantial but the middle name Malcolm is a good indicator as to his parents.
And well done ecksdochter for supplying all that information.

Hello techgal & buckhind,
Hope the information I supplied hasn't been misleading. If Alexander was born in Kinross-shire then Andrew Greig & Isabel Malcolm are possible parents. If you have no proof he was born in Kinross-shire then he could come from any part of Scotland. The names Greig & Malcolm are pretty widespread across the country.
I would be inclined to check incoming passenger lists, New York to see if Alexander & William arrived in the same ship. According to Alexander's Naturalization Card, he arrived Aug, 1841 at Manchester, New York. William's card just says New York. Death Certificates for both Alexander & William would be worth tracking.
Only thing positive at the moment is that William Greig & his wife Janet McGrigor are not Alexander Malcolm Greig's parents.
Hope you find that connection to Kinross-shire.
               Regards,     Dod.

Did Alexander and William possibily marry sisters? Both wives show are having being born in Norway. William Greig's marriage entry correspond with an entry on the index for a Torina Harlson (24 May 1850, Racine, Vol. 1, pg 134).

Wondered whether Harlson would be a spelling variant/transcription of Olsen/Olson/Oleson etc.

No, while Alex and William married women who were both from Norway, they were not sisters.  Alex married Grace Oleson and William married Torina Harlson.

There is a history of Dane County from 1880 that has biographical sketches.  Included is one for Alexander M. Greig and lists his birthplace as Kinrosshire 1819.
