Hello,
I would like to find out some background information about Helen Shanks (b 1890 Linlithgow) and who married Roallan Cadenhead.
In 1921, on "S.S. Athenic", she emigrated to NZ with 5 children. Her husband I believe went some months earlier.
Who were her parents (and grandparents), when did she marry, and when/where were the children born? Where was Roallan Cadenhead from? Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Helen was born 18 Oct 1888 in Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland to William Shanks and Margaret Shields.

You should be able to find almost everything you want (birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates and census returns) at modest cost at Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. What you won't be able to find is the birth certificates of any children born more recently than 100 years ago.

Address: Hill Of Corskie, Cluny, Aberdeenshire
Census entries can be followed through. As Forfarian suggests, checking the marriage cert for Roallan and wife Helen will help you now firm up better.

Fits with the details above for Roallan. Marriage to Helen Shanks showing in 1907 it seems. That would be next thing to check as discussed...
Roallan's mother, Jane Cadenhead looks to have married a William Taylor in Skene, Aberdeenshire in 1886. That would be another marriage entry to check perhaps to confirm details. If mum Jane married in 1886, would explain why Roallan was with his maternal grandparents still in 1891 likely. Mum Jane had at least seven more children after her marriage.

Rowallan and Helen Cadenhead had 6 children. The youngest was born in Fairlie, New Zealand while the older 5 were born in Scotland

Helen Shanks parents were William Shanks 1842-1928 and Margaret Shields Alexander 1850-1936. They had 8 children. Margaret Shields Alexander's mother was Ann Hay and her father John Alexander. They were not married,

Hi Helen, just came across this site by accident, my name is Moya Shanks and I am married to William Shanks he was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1943 his parents were George Shanks and Margaret Shanks (nee Drummond ) they immigrated to New Zealand on the Larges Bay in 1947. When they arrived in N.Z. they stayed with Allan Cadenhead in Fairlie in N.Z.. Bill (my husband) believes he was possibly Roallan Cadenhead and shortened it to Allan he was approx 60-70 in age at the time. Bill has the original Shaw Saville Line paperwork showing the cost of the fare from Scotland to N.Z.
Bill was born on 30 October 1943 and his Dad George was born in Linlithgow.
His 3rd cousins live in Perth in Western Australia and Margaret Pittuck (nee Hand) has the full family history as her mother was Agnes (Nan) Hand (nee Shanks). Please feel free to contact me if I can help you with any thing else. Pm me at moyashanks@hotmail.com. Regards Moya Shanks
