I have only just returned to this forum after many years away - so, just to repeat an offer made years ago - I have a database of all 28,000+ British Waterloo combatants and would be very interested to hear from anyone who either
a) is looking for help in researching a Waterloo soldier or
b) would like to share details of their Waterloo ancestor with me
Ancestry.com and other similar sites will try to take your money to look up Waterloo men using the medal roll held at Kew. It would take too long to explain just how flawed and incomplete the medal roll is - but there are hundreds of Waterloo soldiers who do not appear on it for various reasons and, besides, the roll provides no biographical information.
Anyway - do please get in touch if you want me to look someone up. Please provide as much detail as possible - name and birthplace or regiment is often enough but if the surname is a common one then the more detail the better.

To take advantage of your generous offer, my gggrandfather James Griffiths born Mitcheltroy Mon. 1792 Died Soudley, Forest of dean, Glos. 1857. I have no reason to think he was a soldier. However, he would have become of military age c1809 and you had to belong to something.
His mother died in 1802 and his father about 1797. He and his sister would have had to go to another family due to tender ages. There was a James Griffiths attested, at Chepstow 1809, into the Monmouthshire Militia. Birthplace given as Ditton (must be Dixton Newton just north of Monmouth). Transferred to 56th Regiment 1813. Even if it was him, 56th was not at Waterloo.
I did find a James Griffiths in the 4th Regiment whose 1st Battalion was at Waterloo.

My ancester was a Thomas Carpenter born circa 1794 and I believe was in the 1st Dragoons.

I would really love to know if a Thomas Brown of the Royal Waggon Train did take part in the Battle of Waterloo. The only thing I know for sure is that a son: George, born 21 Oct. 1815 in France Neuil in Dept. de Seine et Oise Father Thomas listed as Farrier, Royal Waggon Train. Mother Mary in Chaplains Report. Signature of Adjutant J. Toogood Coward.
I understand there is a medal award to a Thomas Brown on Find my Past but I do not have subscription and therefore not checked that this is the right Thomas Brown and the little I have found on George Brown is that he also followed his father's footsteps being listed as Farrier.
I would be grateful for any info. you may be able to give re the above.

Do you have any information on Jacob Standley who served in 22 foot Regiment? He was born in 1786 in Marton, Warwickshire. He joined the army in 1801 and served for 23 years so he may have been at the Battle of Waterloo. He spent some time in Mauritius and went to live there with his french wife and family when he was discharged from the army in 1823.

I have timedout to add this to my original Post. Can't remember where I found this, but he was supposed to be at Battle of waterloo:-
James Griffiths Pvte. Captain Joliffe's Company No 8. Oddly no regiment given, No 8 presumably refers to company number ie 8th (Battalion) Company out of 10 incl 1st Grenadier and 10th Light.

Just came across your kind offer to look for men who served at Waterloo. Would you be kind enough to see if you have the following -
Corporal John SHAW was a Life Guardsman of Cossall. He was a famous bare knuckle fighter and fell at Waterloo. I think he was born 1790ish in Nottinghamshire.
I also have a Samuel GEORGE who enlisted in the 2nd Foot (Coldstream) Regiment of Foot Guards
in 1813 at the age of 18. The Regiment in London have no trace of him but I discovered him listed in the Accounts as being at Waterloo in 1817/1818 and a W next to his name on the Muster Lists.
Were the Coldstream Guards there after the battle? I would be pleased to know if you have any information about him.

The 2nd Battalion 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards, or 2nd Bn Coldstreams were at Waterloo and did stay in France as part of the army of occupation. One source says they arrived back in England in February 1816. A second says November 1818.
You would normally expect a 'Waterloo man' to be recorded correctly, as they received (originally) a half penny a day pension. This was later changed to two years added pensionable service. And paymasters who looked after the muster books kept accurate records.

Hi Martin, wondered if you could check out Samuel Foord (interchangeable with Ford) for me please.
Born 1789 in Ringmer, Sussex to John & Elizabeth Foord he died Ringmer 1850. He had children born 1812, 1814 & 1816 Ringmer so I think unlikely however someone with a private tree on Ancestry has this same character and attached to him a picture of a Waterloo Medal with the annotation 'given to all men who served at Waterloo' which implies that he was there.

I wonder if you can help me with Charles Howard. He traveled to Australia with the Commissariat in 1823 on the Sir Godfrey Webster. Fortunately diarist GTWB Boyes was on the same ship and with the Commissariat and recorded some information in his diaries and letters about Charles Howard's family. Charles Howard's father was living in Southampton and Charles sister had spent some years in Barbados. (Chapman, Peter editor The Diaries and Letters of GTWB Boyes, 1985).
I found an Ann Howard married John Ware (or Wase), lieutenant, who was with the Royal York Rangers Rifle Regiment (and I found this regiment was at Barbados). John and Ann married at Southampton June 1809. Ann's father was Richard Howard according to the Marriage Allegation. I found a Charles Howard baptised Holy Rood Church Southampton in 1794 with father Richard and mother Sarah. An Ann Howard was baptised in 1785 at All Saints Southampton, where the marriage later was, with parents Richard and Sarah.
In 1920 Charles Howard's son Edward C O Howard recollected "My father went through the Peninsular war, and on the final evacuation of the British troops after Waterloo he was ordered to Sierra Leone. His next stations were Bathurst, Windsor, and Sydney, New South Wales, and in 1837 he took charge of the Commissariat department in Melbourne, retiring from the army in 1841 with the rank of assistant commissary general. He died in 1852." The Argus 6 March 1920

Still trying to find Thomas Brown, Royal Waggon Train Regiment. I recall reading somewhere that Wellington mentioned the Royal Waggon Train and how helpful they were in helping to win the battle of Waterloo. May I ask if you have any enlisted men named Brown, Thomas, he was a Farrier, on your list of names.
I have checked the Archives and they do have a couple of Brown's but as I do not know anything other that he and his wife were in France in 1815 and I see none for London if that is where he was enlisted and where his son George who was born in France 1815 lived. I have and still am trying to get more (CERTS) from George Brown info but so far no info that would help re finding the enlistment records for his father Thomas. Thank you, Lookin2

Thank you so much for the offer. I'm looking for information on a James Wigfield born in 1773 Oyland, Yorkshire. He was with the 2nd Royal Tower Hamlets Militia – Bethnal Green.
Made up from Gent to Lieutenant – April 1812 – (War Office 20.09.1825) I have just 2 records of him, both in the Census of 1851 and 1861. I have not found him in any other census. Why or when he moved to London is a mystery. Thank you very much.

Hi, there IS a Thomas Brown listed in the RWT at Waterloo (and would have been awarded a medal, along with all other soldiers present in the campaign). He is listed as being in Number 1 Troop. However, he is listed as an ordinary Private not a Farrier so may be a different Thomas Brown. A very kind offer! I have a discharge paper for my ancestor Jeremiah Hall of 'Eaton Bridge' (Edenbridge) in Kent dated 1822. He was born in 1789. He signed up in 1807 at the age of 18 and was in the Royal Artillery, he was discharged from Ireland. If he was in the Royal Artillery at that point would that have meant he would have fought at Waterloo? I have tried searching on find my past and came up with his statement of service but that is all. He doesn't seem to come up on their list. Would you be able to help.

Hi Kerry - the Royal Artillery consisted of many different battalions and most were not at Waterloo, so I'm afraid the answer is no - being in the RA does not necessarily mean he was there. There is no Jeremiah Hall on my current lists. You say you have a copy of his discharge papers - these will have "Waterloo - 2 years" or something similar written on it (next to his dates of service) if he was a Waterloo Man.

My ancestor, John Paterson, born 1783 in Hamilton, Scotland, joined the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders) on 25 February 1805. He was wounded on 16 June 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo and discharged in 1816 at the age of 33 (his age having been erroneously recorded as 31 but amended on the discharge document he signed).
I have his service record on which is a notation at the top left of the page, which looks like 4th Airdrie 9/7/29. He must have re-enlisted in another force because there are two Chelsea Pensioner records for him -- one for John Paterson, born Hamilton, age 33, 79th Regiment of Foot, dated 1816 and another for John Paterson, born Hamilton, age 56, Independent Companies, 1839.
However, I can't find a medal record for my John Paterson. Could you please have a look for me?
I also wanted to ask if any further information might be available at Kew archives or elsewhere. For example, where would I find his attestation papers or documentation of his pay address, next of kin, etc.?

The record on Findmypast is all that remains having been culled (to save space) during the past 180-190 years. Records did not include next of kin until c1880s. Sometimes you get it on a muster, but not until much later. Again later musters sometimes contain remittances to family back home. But most men spent all their pay of food and beer - beer was a food tuff as you could not drink the water.
If you can get to Kew or have a large budget you can follow his service using the muster books from 1805 to 1816. He would have enlisted for unlimited service - ie for life - but there was a reduction in 1816 following Waterloo. So his injuries would have prompted his discharge.
Can you post a link to the second set of papaers on FindMyPast?

Pity those muster books aren't online or retained in libraries elsewhere, as I live in Australia.
I've attached an excerpt of the second set of Chelsea Pensioner papers, John Paterson being third from the top of the page, age 56, lame of his left hand. The earlier document cites the wound to his right foot suffered on 16 June 1815 at Quatre Bras in the Battle of Waterloo.
Having been discharged as unfit for further service from the 79th of Foot on 21/11/1816, is it conceivable that he could have subsequently enlisted in an Independent Company?
The final Chelsea Pensioner document I have cites his date of discharge (21/11/1816), birth in Hamilton and death on 5 March 1849.
On the 1841 Scotland census, there is a John Paterson, age 58, domiciled in Leechlee Street, Hamilton, with Jean, age 54, James Crawford, age 23, and Alexander Crawford. I believe this is my John Paterson but hoped to find further information from his service records to substantiate this and to determine if Jean was his spouse.

Hello Martin.
If your very kind offer is still open, I would be very interested in finding out about my gtx4 grandfather Charles Mitchell. Another kind forum member informed me that he was in the First Battalion of Rifle Brigade ( formerly the 95th Regiment of Foot, the 95th Rifles). This is on his marriage certificate that took place in Gorbals, Glasgow 1820.
I think that my ancestor would have been too young to be at Waterloo but it would be great to have a yay or nay confirmation. He was probably born between 1798 and 1802 in Kibworth or Kilworth Leicestershire, and would have been very young if he was at Waterloo. It would be interesting to know if there are other Mitchell's from that battalion at Waterloo, as I don't know much about the army and if generations of the same family would have joined the same division or not.

I stumbled on your rootschat post offering to lookup Waterloo Medal holders. If you are still prepared to do this, I would be grateful if you could help with the following:
My Gt.Gt.Gt Grandfather, John McKenzie, was born in Kindrochit -(from the Gaelic Ceann
Drochaid – meaning Bridgend.) Ardtalnaig, on South Loch Tayside. It is in the Parish of Kenmore, Perthshire, on 12th May 1786.
He married late, at the age of 40 to an 18 year old girl, Catharine McCallum.in December 1816. I was curious about the age difference first of all. Statistical accounts show fewer males than females and this might be the reason. However, this would be around the time of the Napoleonic wars and it occurred to me that he could well have been involved overseas. The date of his marriage in 1816 is perhaps significant, being only a year after Waterloo, so I wondered if he had been there.
The medal roll lists about nine men called John McKenzie. Kenmore would have been
recruiting territory of the 42nd Foot (Royal Highland) – Black Watch, and two of the John McKenzies were in the 42nd, as far as I know Other regiments, such as the 79th Foot (Cameronians) may have recruited in Perthshire too, but I don't know.
The census of 1841 shows him still at Kindrochit, or Kindrochad, as an agricultural labourer.
I hope that you may be able to help to find out if he was indeed at Waterloo. Any information would be much appreciated,

Hi Martin, If your generous offer is still open, I have a missing person by the name of William Addis of Newark, Nottinghamshire. He married in 1797, had 3 children, then his wife had 3 further children baptised as illegitimate. I am speculating that he may have been in the militia. There is no death record. Thanks, if you are able to tell me anything.

I'm looking for the names of the parents of Alexander Campbell, 79th Regiment of Foot, who died at Waterloo 18 June 1815. He had been in the Militia and Army since 1803.
In May 1809, the Record of Non Commissioned Officers, Trumpeters and Privates of His Majesty's 1st Btn. 79th of Foot indicates that he gave his age as 28, born Kinvaigh (Kenovay) Tiree. That would make his estimated birth year 1781.
In June 1818, his dues of 7/8 were discharged to his widow in Tiree (Catherine MacLean). They were married 3 Feb 1808.
I am hoping to find a family connection between Alexander Campbell's Tiree family and my own Campbells of Tiree. My Tiree GGGG Grandfather Dougald Campbell was born before 1768, so this brick wall is proving hard to break down. Many thanks, Sharon

Just found your offer for free look-up for Battle of Waterloo Men.
I am looking for more information on Peter Montgomery my 4th great grandfather. Peter was born about 1775 in Dromore, Co. Down. He served in the 27th Foot and was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo. He was discharged from Chelsea Hospital on July 2, 1816 at the age of 41. I do not know when Peter was married, but his wife was Mary Lavery. He had three known daughters, Charlotte, Ann and Eleanor. Eleanor was born in 1819 in Dromore after Peter left the Army. He also had a son, but his name is unknown. Peter immigrated to Canada in 1827 to take advantage of the free land offered to former soldiers. When Peter applied for his land in Canada he said he was as Sergeant. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You seem to be having trouble with how Chelsea was involved. Chelsea did not provide medical treatment. After discharge from the army to pension the records of the soldier were sent to Chelsea Hospital who paid the pensions.

The following is a portion of a letter written in 1891 by Peter Montgomery’s youngest daughter about her father at the Battle of Waterloo:
“He was wounded just as the battle was gained. He lay bleeding on the field until he was almost dead when he was found by a British Officer and taken to a house where he was cared for until he was taken to Chelsea Hospital where he remained for two years until he was well when he returned home to my mother and the children.”
This is why I thought that he had been taken to Chelsea Hospital for treatment.

I wonder if you have the name of Charles Hide, born 24 -10-1782 in Bury St.Edmunds.
I`m desperate to find this 3x grandfather.
He left after ..?....and married in 1817 in St.-Petersburg an English lady who was born in that town.
He seemed to spoke more then just English.
So I was wondering has he joined the army and then went on to Russia ?

I wonder if you can help me with Charles Howard. He traveled to Australia with the Commissariat in 1823 on the Sir Godfrey Webster. Fortunately diarist GTWB Boyes was on the same ship and with the Commissariat and recorded some information in his diaries and letters about Charles Howard's family. Charles Howard's father was living in Southampton and Charles sister had spent some years in Barbados. (Chapman, Peter editor The Diaries and Letters of GTWB Boyes, 1985).
I found an Ann Howard married John Ware (or Wase), lieutenant, who was with the Royal York Rangers Rifle Regiment (and I found this regiment was at Barbados). John and Ann married at Southampton June 1809. Ann's father was Richard Howard according to the Marriage Allegation. I found a Charles Howard baptised Holy Rood Church Southampton in 1794 with father Richard and mother Sarah. An Ann Howard was baptised in 1785 at All Saints Southampton, where the marriage later was, with parents Richard and Sarah.
In 1920 Charles Howard's son Edward C O Howard recollected "My father went through the Peninsular war, and on the final evacuation of the British troops after Waterloo he was ordered to Sierra Leone. His next stations were Bathurst, Windsor, and Sydney, New South Wales, and in 1837 he took charge of the Commissariat department in Melbourne, retiring from the army in 1841 with the rank of assistant commissary general. His name is Daniel Finch born 1791 in Dudley, West Midlands, he's my 5 x Great Uncle. He may be the same Daniel Finch who was a Private with the 2nd Regiment of Foot, Coldstream Guards, in Lieutenant Colonel Henry Dawkin's Company.
I have found a couple of records that mention a Daniel Finch of the same age being present at Waterloo.
I've also found a record for a "Waterloo medal" in the name of Daniel Finch which was sold in 2013.
Daniel's first daughter Elizabeth and his first son Alexander were born 1814 and 1821 respectively and on their baptism record they have their father's occupation as "Soldier".
Could anyone please tell me where I might find more information? Such as a service number, place of birth or parents name, anything that might identify him as my relative from Dudley.

I did have the same conclusion from another source who was an archivist for the Coldstream guards and he said "it is probably true he is a Waterloo Man". I was still hoping to have that bit of information that would prove without doubt he was a Waterloo Man.

I would like to prove that my 4xgreat grandfather David Bruce born 1781, in Wick, Caithness, died at Waterloo?. The story from my Scottish relatives says he was an officer in the 42nd reg, 2nd batt, and fell from his horse on to his own sword. I can only find info for a Private David Bruce from Caithness. I think the stories of him being an officer have got embellished over the years. His wife Elizabeth Forbes was a nurse and camp follower at Waterloo and when she found out her husband died in the battle she gave birth early to my 3x great grandfather David Bruce. This information is on the baptism of 1815. If you could find him on the Waterloo list you have that would be much appreciated.

I am afraid that there is no man named 'David Bruce' on my Waterloo Roll. In fact, there is no man with the name 'Bruce' serving with the 42nd Regiment.
I have also checked the 'Waterloo Roll Call' which lists only officers, but alas he is not included.

Are you able to look up an Isaac Webb for me? He was born in Elmore, Gloucestershire in 1790 and was living in Worcester by 1823. He died in an Almshouse, in Worcester, at a decent age and his death notice said "much respected. The deceased was at the Battle of Waterloo." I've tried looking at lists on the National Archives but can't find him. I suppose "at the battle" might not mean he was a soldier necessarily. However, in our family, in most generations following him, many have enlisted when needed to serve. (Perhaps his story was exaggerated to inspire!) If he's too hard to look up without a regiment known, I understand. Thanks for spending time doing these offers.

Only one man with the name 'George Townsend' on my Waterloo Roll. He was a Serjeant with the 1st Foot Guards. He was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1781 and enlisted into the 1st Foot Guards at Dover on 6th Dec 1813, aged 32. Townsend was discharged to pension with the rank of 'Colour Serjeant' on 9th Jan 1833. He died in Sheffield on 13th Dec 1863.
If this is your man - then I have further information, if you so desire.

Many thanks, but how strange, as I have just double-checked the UK Muster Books & Paylists 1812-1817 and a David Bruce from Wick, Caithness is definitely listed as a soldier in 42nd Reg but in the 1st Batt this time, 27th May - 16th June 1815 and listed as killed. He is also listed on a Description roll under Capt Donald Williamson's Company as a soldier in 42nd Reg, 2nd Batt 1803-1805. I think he must have mistakenly been left off the list.

Hi, thank you for the response. First of all, it 'was' the 1st Battalion that was present at Waterloo, but there was not a Captain Williamson's Company - that does not mean he was not serving at Waterloo.
Also, I have double-checked the "MINT" Roll, this was the Royal Mint, where all the regiments sent the names of the men who were entitled to the Waterloo Medal ........ he is not included on the roll, so his next of kin did not receive a Waterloo Medal, or was there one issued.
As you said - he could have been mistakenly left off the list...........he certainly would not be the first.
There are so many mistakes on the Waterloo Roll, in fact, that is the main reason I started my Roll. In the twenty years since I have been collecting data, I have added 2350 names of men that should be included on the Waterloo Roll and were entitled to the Waterloo Medal. So you can rest assured that your 'David Bruce' should be added to that list.

Thanks Ed, it is a start. Although I do grapple with anything military! Especially understanding the sometimes changeable names of regiments in wars. I've looked online and as far as I can understand the 2nd Battalion/3rd Foot Guards is also known as the Scots Fusiliers aka Scots Guards...? Interesting that a Gloucestershire country fellow joins a Scots company, or perhaps that is more name than a place. I gather too that the 2nd Batt/3rd Foot Guard were involved in the Hougoumont Château battle and probably fought in the orchards outside the chateau. If that's not a PTSD event, I don't know what is. Isaac became a humble fisherman after Waterloo. On the River Severn. A far cry from Waterloo.
In order to find his records, if they exist, I expect I may have to join Ancestry as they appear to have those records. I've been researching 12 years and have successfully avoided Ancestry so far :) They seemed to have got the scoop on military records.

I was hoping to find William (or Wm) Smith of 71st Regiment of Foot. He was born Midlothian Edinburgh c 1788 and was pensioned on 13 Jan 1830 age 42. He was a Serjeant. He was on the Napoleonic medals roll as Serjt William Smith of 71st Foot in Capt McIntyre's Company.
He was married in Chester on 29 Nov 1819 and was my gg grandfather. William and his wife Catharine Jenkins had 10 children - 3 of whom whilst William was a soldier (born in Cheshire; Devon; and Wallstown, Cloyne Ireland) The others after his retirement were born in the Cheshire area.
Anything you can add would be much appreciated.

The only information I have is that there were two William Smith's serving with the 71st Foot at Waterloo: Smith No 1 ( as you have alluded to ) served in Captain McTyre's company.
Smith No 2 served in Captain Pidgeon's company.
Smith No1 saw service with the regiment during the Corunna campaign of 1808 - 1809, where he was present during the battle of 'Vimiera' on 21st Aug 1808. After the retreat from Corunna in Jan 1809, the 71st returned to England. Smith later returned to the Peninsular and was present at a further two major engagements: 'Vittoria' on 21st June 1813 and 'Orthes' on 17th Feb 1814.
Also as you state, he was awarded the Military General Service Medal 1793 - 1814, with the bars for Vimiera, Vittoria and Orthes.
I am sorry, but this is the only information I have on your man.

Hi, I have 45 Andrew's on my Roll, but only information on 22 of these men. Sorry, none are from Cambridge - the remaining 23 men, all I have is their Regiment.
Hullet's there are none, so I checked on the name Hallett of which there are 3.
One was killed, one I have no information on and the last one was from Darfield, Yorkshire. There is one man named Hulley, but he too was from Yorkshire...............so not much luck I'm afraid.

Unfortunately not. It is a fact that hundreds and hundreds of men were omitted from the Roll if they were killed - even officers. On the Waterloo roll that I purchased by the 'London Stamp exchange' about forty years ago, Lt. General Sir Thomas Picton who was killed at Waterloo, was not included on the roll. The government at the time stated that "All men, including those killed", were entitled to the Waterloo Medal - the medal given to the next of kin, if killed. This was obviously not made clear to the Regimental Paymasters ( the men responsible for forwarding the list of men to the Royal Mint. )
Many have asked the same question as you, sadly the official roll has never been changed.
Maybe one day I should get my roll published - at least it would be more accurate and credit the men who fully deserve to be included on the Waterloo Roll.

I'm hoping someone can answer my query. My GrGrGr Grandfather John Lawrence was born in 1790 in Wrotham, Kent. He enlisted in Leeds on the 5 May 1812 with the 52nd Foot Solders, 2nd Battalion. A later record I have and also his death certificate has him being with the 23rd Foot Soldiers. Would he have moved from one battalion to another. The record I have has his discharge date as the 18 May 1819 in Dublin, Leinster, Ireland.
I would also be interested to know if he was a soldier at the Battle of Waterloo.
I would be very grateful for any further information.

His army discharge record shows that he served with 52nd Foot from 8 January 1812 to 24 March 1817, and with 23rd Foot from 25 March 1817 until his discharge on 18 May 1819. There is no mention of service at Waterloo (which would have given him an extra 2 years pensionable service), but he was certainly in France in 1817-18. Discharged at Limerick, and given marching money for himself, his wife and two children to allow them to proceed to Dublin.
He was discharged on account of general debility and incontinence of urine contracted in France in 1818.

"Yes" indeed there is a John Lawrence on the Waterloo Medal Roll. he is shown as serving in Captain Love's company. Lawrence also saw service with the regiment during the later stages of the Peninsular war, where he was present at the battle of 'Toulouse' on 10th April 1814. He was awarded the Military General Service Medal - with clasp 'Toulouse'.
I have no record of his Waterloo Medal or M.G.S. Medal coming on the market in any of the auction houses.

Sorry, Shaun, I forgot to answer your question regarding his move to the 23rd Foot. After Waterloo, most of the regiments were ordered to reduce the number of men in their Battalions. But as with your man, he just re-enlisted into another regiment that was still recruiting.

between 4- 6 women per company were permitted ( officially ) to accompany the Regiment abroad.
A company during the Peninsular war consisted of 200 men but was always understaffed. In fact most of the time the average company was about 100 men.
Many women did follow their men abroad but usually had to make their own way.
The book 'Following the Drum' is a good book to read if you want to find out more - you can buy a used one on ebay, for £2.

There is also another good book about army wives titled: Catherine Exley's Diary, the life and times of an army wife in the Peninsular War, edited by Rebecca Probert. I read this after finding our my 4x great grandmother was a camp follower.

What caught my eye was the words wife and two children Shaun mentioned.
John Lawrence joined the Military on the 5 May 1812 and married Ann Story on the 8 July 1812. They had seven children from 1819 to 1831 all in Kent that I knew about. If in 1819 their were two children then their must have been other children before 1819. William born in 1819 baptised on the 17 Oct 1819 in Plaxtol, Kent where his father was born could possibly have been one of the children with Ann.I have just found a George baptised on the 4 June 1815 in Wrotham, Kent with parents John and Ann which I believe could the other missing son.

He is not listed on my Waterloo roll, ( probably too young at the time ).
After searching the National Archives - I have found him. His name is recorded as 'Redmond' and he served with the 54th Foot and the 1st Life guards from 1822 - 1826. Redmond was discharged in 1826, aged 26. His service was brief, which would indicate a severe illness or accident. He must have been a very tall man for the the time, as the Life Guards recruited men of 6ft tall on average.
His service documents are held at the National Archives: WO 97/675/51

James W Redmond/Redman was indeed quite tall: 5' 113/4" per his discharge papers. But he spent only 5 days with the Life Guards, in February 1822. It's not clear why he was discharged but his service was treated as pensionable. 8 months later he enlisted in 54th Regiment and had risen to Sergeant by the time he was discharged in 1826.
Served in India, got a bamboo splinter in his foot which led to his discharge. He died in 1862.

There is only one man with the name 'joseph Bush' on the Waterloo Roll: he served with the 4th foot in Captain Craig's company. Sadly this is the only information I have on him. There does not seem to be any records of him in the National Archives records. You might get further info from the muster lists.

I have found a Thomas Filer on the Waterloo Medal Roll*as a drummer with the 1st Batt., 4th Regt. of Foot.
Thomas and his brother John were both Chelsea Pensioners and, although I have found Thomas's service records on FindMyPast, I have not found John's. However, there is a John Filer directly above Thomas's entry on the 4th Foot list of those awarded the MGSM (John has three clasps and Thomas four). I believe that there is a good chance that John is Thomas's brother and wondered if he was also at Waterloo?

This is not conclusive evidence, as there are many omissions from the Roll ( hundreds in fact ). There is a possibility that he was discharged before Waterloo. The only suggestion I can give is to check the muster lists. I am not aware if the 4th Foot's musters are available on line. 'Ancestry' I believe have musters available, but I am not sure if they hold the 4th foot. If not then it would mean a visit to the Public Records Office at KEW.

It's a pity that none of his military records appear to have survived apart from the fact that he died an in-penioner at the Chelsea Hospital in 1876. He and his brother were both born in Colchester and he clearly served in the military so I'm fairly confident that the John on the MGSM records is him. Looks like I'll have to go to Kew at some time to see if I can find anything else about him.

Thanks Shaun. He was definitely living in Priory Street in 1861 but had moved to Roman Road by 1871. Unfortunately I let my Ancestry subscription expire this year after many consecutive years and at present have only FindMyPast and MyHeritage subs active so I'll have to wait until I sign up for Ancestry again, probably later in the year or, hopefully, one of their free wekends.

Spain and Portugal suggests he served in the Peninsular war. The Military General Service Medal runs to 1814. I have a man in that list who had served from 1805 and was discharged 1815/16, and was not at Waterloo. Perhaps a good number finished after returning from Spain.

Yes, John and Thomas were both in the Peninsula War, John earning the MGSM with three clasps and Thomas four.

With regard to my direct ancestor, John Shipman (b. Bridgnorth, c.1779; d. Friar Street, Bridgnorth, 22 November 1837), I have the 1816 23rd Regiment of Foot Register of Pensioners. This has "Waterloo" written under many men's entries - but not his. I also have his discharge papers showing service from 5 March 1798 to 24 September 1816 (as Sergeant, Corporal, Private) signed (in his own hand - matches his marriage register in 1803) on 10 September 1816.
Anything more would be very gratefully received.

Hi, hoping you can help me with my ancestor Thomas Dawborn. He enlisted in 1806 with the 10th Hussars, at the age of 43, and supposedly born in Hertfordshire. His Waterloo medal was incorrectly inscribed as Chas Dawborn, and I would like to hear of any additional info about this soldier please.

He was supposedly at Waterloo, and was eventually discharged medically unfit in 1840 at Woolwich. He received a pension but there is no record of him after that date. I would be really pleased if you could let me know any more about this man.

There is no mention of Waterloo service in his army records:

HI Helen, No man named 'Rodway' on the Waterloo roll.
There are seven men with the name 'Bingham' on the roll - I have data on six of the men, but alas none of them were from Gloucestershire I'm afraid. The seventh man - all I have is that he was Assistant Surgeon with the Royal Artillery and died in Ireland on 20th Jan 1825.

The dates of pension increments are recorded in his army discharge papers, the final one being in 1880.
Did he have a son named Samuel? There is this death on 31 August 1887 in Monaghan: John Mills, pensioner aged 93. Informant Samuel Mills, Dawson Street, son.

John Mills is unfortunately a fairly common name, even in the army, so I will keep on looking.

His date of entry into pension was 8 April 1840 and he served with 1st Battalion of Artillery so that provides certainty that this is the right chap: resident in Monaghan, went to Glasgow circa 1855 then back to Monaghan by 1862:-

I'm pretty sure the age recorded is 93 though it has been transcribed as 73. I have more information on a John Mills, pensioner, in Monaghan: a possible second marriage in 1857, a son Samuel married in 1879 aged 20; a daughter Maria married in 1879 aged 18; death of a widow aged 60 in 1893. This thread is probably not the best place to go into all that.

You have a lot of information there. I've been to findmypast but haven't really found anything new except for the 1880 date of the pension increase you mentioned. I would like to see a copy of his discharge papers please, or where to find them, and also the info about him being in Glasgow in 1852. And the new marriages etc included in your last post, although I'm not 100% with it all.

I only have basic information on Samuel Brockley born abt.1787birth not known where but he married in St Giles Pontefract Yorkshire to Elizabeth Davies on 5 May 1818 I have a record from Ancestry stating he was at the Battle of Waterloo. (Medal roll) He died in 23 March 1828 Stockport Cheshire and was buried St Mary's Stockport Cheshire. His first son baptised at St Giles Pontefract on 3 Jan 1819 was listed as father being in Royal Horse Artillery he later emigrated to Australia and died there.
If there is anything that would help with his origins thank you again.

With reference to Samuel Brockley: I have him on my roll as Samuel Bromley, which could be a corruption of Brockley.
Bromley was born in Denton, Lancashire and enlisted into the Royal Artillery on 21st April 1799, aged 18. His service papers state that he was promoted to Bombardier in June 1805 and Serjeant in Nov 1813. Bromley was discharged to a pension of 1s 10d per day at Woolwich on 30th June 1820.
Now this is where it gets interesting - I have him married to 'Elizabeth Davis' in 1818 at Pontefract ( the same as your information ). The 1851 census gives Bromley living at Howards Lane, Haughton, Lancashire, with his wife and 9 members of his family. Although some of the data does not tie up with your own, it is another possibility to follow.
My main concern with Bromley is there is no reference to Waterloo on his service papers, where as Brockley is definitely shown on the Waterloo roll.
