Title: Switzerland - Emil Gottlieb BOL(L)IGER
Post by: Elwyn Soutter on Sunday 27 September 15 01:01 BST (UK)
Looking for guidance on finding the birth/baptism of  EMIL GOTTLIEB BOL(L)IGER in Switzerland on 20.3.1902 (as per a US death cert). Exact location of his birth not known.

Parents names not yet known either, but according to 1930 US census, father was born in Switzerland and mother in Germany. Emil emigrated to the US in 1923.

Would he be in any Swiss census between 1902 and 1923?

Ambly,

Many thanks for that. Do you know how to get a copy of the birth certificate, and whether the Swiss have any publicly available censuses for that period of time?

Hi,

Checked out the original emigration document and name is "Bolliger"

Arghh, it does/did indeed - I kept sticking in that rogue 'n', couldn't get my mind out of the champagne glass  ;D

There is info on  A**&y (in their Historical Records, Person Search (not sure how it is compiled or by whom? - and none of what follows is verified, I'm just relating what I found:)

Places Emil BOLLIGER b1902-d1978 as the son of
Gottlieb BOLLIGER b1879-d1962 and his wife, Dorothea WEICHELT (b1872-d1962) who had two children, Emil (b1902) and  Elizabeth (b1903-d1903).
Gottlieb's other wife was Marianna SCHEIDEGGER (b1866-d1947) and had issue, Marianna (no dates). It doesn't indicate which wife was the first wife.

Gottlieb BOLLIGER 's parents:
Samuel GOTTLIEB (b 1830 Schafisheim, d 1893 Schafisheim)
Verena MULLER (b 1837 Schafisheim, d 1897 Schafisheim)

Samuel's parents:
Samuel BOLLIGER  and Anna ROHR

Hi Elwyn

For his birth certificate you should write to the Standesamt of Schafisheim, if he was born there.
Even if his birth certificate is not there (or he wasn't born there) he must be found in the Bürgerbuch.

Or maybe you should write to the Staatsarchiv of the Canton Aargau.
There is a PDF document in English language:

https://www.ag.ch/de/bks/kultur/archiv_bibliothek/staatsarchiv/benutzung_recherche/familienforschung_1/familienforschung.jsp

Or was he born in Berne, then write to the Staatsarchiv of the Canton Berne
http://www.sta.be.ch/sta/de/index/staatsarchiv/staatsarchiv/genealogie.html

As he was working at the Spinnerei Felsenau (Spinning Factory) in the City of Berne
maybe you can find some information here, if he was born in Berne, you will find him here.

In Switzerland in most Cantons no Census like the ones in the UK or USA are existing.
I only know that the Canton Fribourg has Census very similar to the ones in France.
