You are correct that LLandudno is nowhere near Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf, which is definitely on Anglesey - so I'd go with that.

Think I've managed to work out which family you're looking (Thomas Roberts et al?) and reckon this is a mistake of indexing/transcription somewhere - the image of the census entry doesn't have a town name recorded, so it's somehow been added in incorrectly. Ancestry has a whole load of BMD records for Caernarfon and Bangor down as Anglesey for some reason as well.

Have a look at page one of the various censuses where you will see a description of the enumeration district. This might help you narrow it down.

A more time consuming way of doing it is to get yourself an old map, a modern map and go through the census addresses (I generally write these down in order) looking at the neighbours until you find a landmark which still exists today.

Cross reference this with old and new map location. Sometimes using this method you can work out the approximate location of an address.

Here it is:

You can scroll around the map (drag and drop) and zoom in and out using your mouse wheel.

Tyn y Gongl farm is SE of Plas Uchaf, near where Stad Minnffordd is today. Just follow the road SE from Plas Uchaf and you will find it marked on the old map I provided a link to. Sadly it appears to be under a modern housing estate though I think there are still some older buildings on the corner. (unsure if they are the original dwellings).

If you put your cursor over anything you wish to compare - old and new, you will see it mirrored on both maps, which is handy at times like this so you can find exact locations of streets and buildings.

I think if you look on Google street view you can see the entrance to Plas Uchaf. I haven't checked Tyn y Gongl yet (my computer is playing up  >:().

Not sure I can see Gongl in that census snip. The word looks like it starts with P and has a couple of lls in it  followed by another word starting with Ba (Back?) ....  :-\

Adde:. I have just found Tyn y Gongl slightly west of Tyn y Gongl farm - it actually ends up being located directly south of Plas Uchaf.

It says, "Ty'n Y Pwll Bach"  ...  there may be a house close by named "Ty'n Y Pwll" The first means either 'the house by the small pool' or 'The small house by the pool'.

That looks more like the snip!  :)

I can't see it marked on the NLS map near Tyn y Gongl - maybe it is/was too small to make note of. Might be worth checking other maps though if you would like to find it's location.

From the information that Despair gives regarding the 'sighters' contained in the 1891 Census it looks as though the location of Ty'n Y Pwll Bach, and Ty'n Y Pwll is in the area where the shop and Ty'n Y Gongl Farm are located. There are quite a few places shown here, huddled together and, due to lack of space, will not have been named on the map.
                                               Regards from Sweden.
PS My GGG grandfather was from Plas Llanfair methafarn eithaf.

I have never heard the term "sighters", but what you are saying about the places all huddled together, and not named, makes sense Viking. :)

Just my own term for significant other properties listed close by that may help identify the location of the property of interest.

Hi - I can confirm that Thomas Roberts lived at both Plas Ucha farm and later Tyn Y Pwll Bach in Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf (modern Benllech). He was my Great Great Grandfather and was born in Penmon, Anglesey in 1825. I have managed to follow his path via Ancestry and confirmed his identity on his daughter Ann's wedding certificate. All of the places mentioned in the discussion still exist today and the little old farmhouse still exists alongside the later bigger house at Plas Ucha.

Plas Uchaf in Llanfairmathafarneithaf is on the road between Tynygongl and Marianglas. It's now a caravan site.
