Title: George Henry Taylor
Post by: ctay1449 on Friday 23 October 15 17:23 BST (UK)
I need help in finding more about the family of George Henry Taylor.  He was born in North Tawton, Devon in 1866, immigrated to Canada with his family (wife Ada and children Philip, May (Alice) and John).  I do know he initially settled in Crystal City, Manitoba, and then moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  After Ada died he married Nellie and had two more children - Edith, born in 1911 and Gilbert, born in 1913.  Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, Sandra, your first post is the correct family.  The second post is very interesting.  I thought Nellie''s maiden name was Alexander, but this could be incorrect.  Thanks for your prompt reply!! I now have a new lead!

George Henry Taylor who married Nellie Alexander 6 September 1908 Gloucester was a bachelor of the parish Chalford, Gloucestershire  ???

The son Phillip George Taylor born 11 November 1895 Southend seems to be in Los Angeles California for the WW2 Draft. Phillip could be the P G Taylor who passed away 5 October 1959.
SSN issued California (Before 1951)

Philip George Taylor skated with the Ice Capades and managed the company for 5 years and at the time, I believe, lived in California.  His daughter Megan (George Henry's granddaughter) won the World Championships for figure skating in 1938 and 1939.  Philip apparently travelled the world and sought naturalization in the US.

Thanks for the help Sandra!!  I found on a Canadian census page that George Henry, Philip, May (Alice) and John immigrated to Canada in 1901, and Nellie immigrated in 1909.  I have been searching for a Nellie Payne, but so far no luck!

My train of thought left me wondering if Nellie remarried after George passed away in 1927 and Payne maybe another married name if that was the case.  ???

There is a possibility that Nellie could have remarried, I really don't know. I cannot find any more on Edith (1911), there are quite a few Edith Taylors  in Saskatchewan at that time, but I can't find anything specific.  Also, there is an obituary for Philip G. Taylor that says he is survived by a brother (John), sister (May), one half-sister (Edith) and two half-brothers (Gilbert and ??).  I have not been able to find that write-up.

Could you please indicate where you found the death information for George Henry Taylor  dying in 1927 and where he died. I have found several Edith Taylor's on the Voters lists in Saskatchewan but no idea if she is the one. Have also checked the Saskatoon Obituary Index and nothing there on this family. Also checked for Nellie but again nothing conclusive.

I have checked the Saskatchewan Genealogy Society Databases but found nothing on this family and nothing in history books.

I am beginning to think they moved from Saskatchewan sometime after the 1921 census.

This is a real puzzle.

The family could have moved.  I have a photo of George Henry Taylor's grave with "died January 13, 1927" written on the tombstone.  I just assumed they lived in Saskatoon at the time.  They had lived in Crystal City, Manitoba when they arrived in Canada (George's brother Louis was living there at the time).

Hello
Thank you for your reply. Do you know what cemetery George is buried in. We have a lot of relatives buried  in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon so have done a lot of research there.

I see from George's attestation papers that they lived in Nutana in 1915 which  was part of Saskatoon as we know it today.

Now its time to check out some further ideas that I have and see if I might hit the jackpot.

hi Lilibell,

I am sorry, but I am not able to post the photo of George Henry's grave at this time.  I found the photo in a small case that belonged to his son John Lethbridge Taylor.  On the back of the picture John had written the address of a Mrs. W.R. Wright in London, England.

Hello Carol

I wish I had some news about the cemetery where George Henry is buried. Off the top of my head this picture reminds me of a British cemetery just because of the church in the back ground. Could be what is known as a  parochial cemetery  meaning it is a cemetery connected to a church.

After much searching George, Nellie and Edith seem to completely disappear after the 1916 Canadian census. I have searched high and low in different countries Canada,England to be exact but to no avail.
Gilbert's information you already have. John's information also. Mary Alice died out in BC along with her husband James McMahon.

Do you by chance happen to have a obituary for Gilbert George Taylor sometimes they contain information in regards to family. I have seen some obituaries which have been a little gold mine of information.

Hi, I am still trying to find where George was buried. I have found a U.S. Social Security and Claims Index on a George Taylor (other names on the card are Nellie Payne and Gilbert George Taylor).  The records are from 1936-2007, but it is my impression that George died January 13, 2007 (I sent a photo of his tombstone in a previous post).  Also, I believe Nellie married Lionel Morris in Spokane in 1925.  I am very confused, I wonder if they immigrated to the U.S. after the 1916? Canadian census, as there is no further record of them.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Carol

Google "phil taylor ice capades" and you can watch a movie clip of him skating on stilts in 1941 at 46 years of age.  Noted Megan was born in the UK, did they all go back ther for a while after the war?

Philip and Olwen Taylor returned to England just before Megan was born.  I suppose George could have returned with them.  Nellie, Edith, Gilbert, John and May seem to have remained in Canada.  George's is the only grave I can't find, the others are either in Canada or the States.

The new GRO index has a death for a George Henry Taylor age 62 in Willesden RD. This would make him just about the correct age for your George?

I was wondering if you have tried to find out about the connection to the Mrs Wright?

Canadian BMDs fall under provincial jurisdiction and their availabilty is subject to privacy laws. This link tells you what is available....

I'm afraid I don't know anything about divorce records.
