G'day from OZ, I am helping a friend with her family history and haven't done a great deal of Scottish genealogy, so hoping to get some suggestions.
I have a (not lawful) baptism for David Murphy at St Mary Saltcoats 23 May 1855 to parents David Murphy and Ellen Hart, born 15 June 1854 Kirkintilloch, sponsor Mary Savage.
David's marriage at Dumfries 1876 has mother Ellen Jane Hart domestic servant, no father recorded.
His death 1929 (occupation draper master) has father David Murphy, draper (deceased), and mother Ellen Hart (deceased).
On his mother Hellen Jane Hart's marriage to William McDowall in 1871, her father is Hart, labourer, and mother Mary Savage.
1871 census has Helen McDowal M 34 Hawker born Ireland, David Murphy 16 hawker born Kirkintilloch.
Not found anything on earlier censuses.
I suspect that the father is perhaps David Murphy born 1836, father Bernard Murphy living at Airdrie (10 miles from Kirkintilloch) in 51 and 61 and later went to America with his wife and children.
My question is, where to look for any evidence to help identify the father David Murphy.
Thanks,
Sharon

Sharon,
Scotlandspeople have Catholic Registers - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/search/carbirth/index.aspx
Airdrie would come under St. Margarets and Kirkintilloch most likely Stirling. Register free and buy credits for a modest fee to search.
