I am trying to trace the family of my grandfather Donald McInnes who came to Townsville in 1908 and married Mary Slattery in 1911. Prior to arriving in Townsville he supplied cattle, sheep and horses to the Australian army during the Boar War. He was born in Taree, NSW and was one of 10 boys and 1 girl. His marriage certificate states that his father was John McInnes (Farmer) and Mary McPherson. I have information of his time in Townsville but nothing before his arrival in Townsville . I would appreciate help on this search.

How do you know he was born in Taree?
Have you looked for his birth certificate in NSW? As it must have been over 100 years ago, it should be readily available if your supposition is correct.
It's cheaper to get a transcription - there are 3 agents available to do this for you and they will send it to you by email.
There is a Donald McINNES born 1886 (=25 in 1911) registered at Newcastle, parents Angus & Mary (21819/1886). [John may have been his father's second forename, but the BDM registry often registers only the first forename.]
While Newcastle seems a long way to go to register a birth in Taree, bear in mind that in 1886 it may have been the closest place they could do this ???

Was there a middle name mentioned on that document perhaps?

His Mum's name and any former names ... was Mum noted as deceased on that document
His place of birth
Civil Registration for BDM commenced in NSW in 1856. One of the districts was then known as Manning River and Taree district's registrations commence from about 1885. McINNES can have spelling variations at NSW BDM .... MacInnes, McGinnes, McGinness, MacGuinness, etc etc etc.... Until WWI the registration process was oral information supplied to the districts' BDM office, (often in the rural areas this was a part time function of clerks at the Court Houses). The clerk had the ledger facing him, and of course he was standing at a high wide counter. So the informant (mum/dad) not only needed to be able to read 'upside down' they also needed to be able to read the clerk's scribble, and to correct the clerk's spelling mistakes. So, imagine .... Parents come to town to fetch their goods, go to the court house with the new baby and any older siblings, stand at a high wide counter, and after answering the questions the ledger is swung around and the clerk says 'sign here'.... Would you say "there's spelling mistake" or "I cannot read your writing" or "I am not able to read" or would you obey and simply sign or make your mark "here" ? :)

The Qld BDM online index has the marriage as 2 August 1911, Donald McINNES and Mary Fredrica SLATTERY. (#C3468)
There is a death registration for a Donald McINNES, in 1947 (C2509), with parents as John McINNES and Mary McPHERSON There is also a death registration for a Donald MCINNES with same parents names and a death in 1923. (C2676) So there is at least two Donalds to sort out.

From his death notice in the Townsville Daily bulletin on Monday 9th June 1945 - The death occurred in Townsville on Sunday night of Mr. Donald McInnes, In his 80th year and North Queensland -lost one of its most colorful characters. Generous to a fault, he will be missed by a circle of friends who are scattered all over Australia.
Don-McInnes was a native of New South Wales. He was born at Taree, on the Manning River, and. was one of a family of eleven children— ten sons and one daughter. After leaving school he took up butchering and worked at Lismore, where he delivered meat to farms on the Clarence River by punt, and took produce back to the town.
THE LATE Mr. MclNNES
Gold was being found in various places in West Australia, and young, McInnes went there, and supplied meat to -the diggers. Then he went across to the Rand, in South Africa. When the Boer War broke out he engaged, in the import of horses from Australia, and he also imported huge numbers of cattle and sheep. His activities brought him much success. He took an Interest in racing, and /often told of his disgust at losing a Johannesburg Cup— because the judge did not see the Mc Innes colors out wide under the box. From South Africa, Mr. McInnes went to the Philippine Islands. He opened a horse bazaar In Manila and did a steady trade In Stock imported from Australia, mostly from Townsville, where the late Mr. Jack Fanning selected many horses and ponies for him. Every trip to the East the old Taiyuan and Changaha carried stock from Townsville to Manila for the McInnes bazaar. It was in 1909 that Mr. McInnes came to Townsville. He had met with an accident, and broken a leg, and it was still in splints when he boarded the steamer In Manila. When he was well again he conducted his horse shipping business from North Queensland. He acquired a large area of land at Rosslea Estate, and built a comfort able home on the bank of Ross River. His holding included the present golf links and much other land, which was later cut up into blocks and built upon. It was natural for a man with his interests to become interested in Townsville racing. He raced several horses at Cluden, but saw the possibilities of race promotion himself and ran unregistered racing at Cleveland. Going back to the registered ranks, Mr. Mclnnes raced at Cluden again, and also became a bookmaker. He was very successful and built fine premises in Flinders Street, where he announced himself as 'the right man on the wrong side.'
Donald had died before I met and married his grand-daughter Anne but Nana Mary lived until she was 103. Anne and I had a lot to do with Nana Mary but she never revealed much of her husbands life before they married. Don was 37 and Mary 17 when they married.

MRS. CATHERINE BIGNELL
A former well-known resident of the Manning, in the person of Mrs. Catherine Bignell, relict of the late George Septimus Bignell, passed away at her home in Woollahra on Sunday last, aged 74 years. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mclnnes, ot Kimbriki, and after her marriage she lived at Croki, where her husband conducted a shop and was also employed on the North Coast wharf. Later she lived at Taree and some years ago moved to Woollahra. She is survived by three daughters and one son. A second son predeceased her. Brothers are Messrs. John Mclnnes (Lakemba), Donald Mclnnes (Townsville), and Daniel Mclnnes (Sydney). Another brother, James, died at Kendall. The remains were interred in the South Head cemetery on Monday afternoon.

It is not without feelings of profound regret that we note from time to time the demise of many of our old landmarks. Only a few weeks ago in one of your issues was chronicled the death of Mr. John McInnes, formerly of Taree Estate, and now I am informed of the death of his wife, who only survived him by eight weeks. Their married life was an exceptionally long one, having entered the bonds of matrimony in the year 1848 — hence they were 55 years married. From the Hunter district they came to the Manning in the primeval days of 1856, and went through the usual ordeal of pioneer farming times, with more or less success. Their family consisted of 8 sons and 3 daughters, and of the latter only Mrs Bignell, of Taree survives them. The sons are all fairly prosperous in their various spheres of life, and it may be edifying to their many friends to know that they rendered every assistance that filial duty and affection could suggest to soothe the last years and days of their old and respected parents. It was the writer's mournful pleasure to pay a visit to Mr McInnes, only a few hours prior to his death, and was met with that genial smile so characteristic of him all through life. He was quite collected and prepared to die, suffering not the slightest pain, his affectionate wife administering to his wants with that zeal and attachment which made her revered and esteemed of all. Truly it might be said of them, "in life they were attached, in death they were not divided."

Death of Hugh McINNES
Death of Mr. Hugh McInnes - On Tuesday last, Mrs. Bignell, of Taree, received the sad intelligence by telegram of the death of her brother, Mr. Hugh Mclnnes, of Leichhardt, who died that morning from appendicitis in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. An operation had been successfully performed, but Mr. Mclnnes took a turn for the worse. He leaves a widow and five children . The news came as quite a shock, as it was not known here that Mr. Mclnnes was ill. The deceased, who was 36 years of age, served his apprenticeship in the old Advocate Office at Wingham, and up till about two years ago was editing a paper on the Richmond River, where he had been connected with press and printing matters at Lismore and Ballina. From there he went to Leichhardt, where he purchased a job printing office, which he was conducting up to the time of his death. He was a son of the late Mr. John Mclnnes, who for 25 years resided on Taree Estate. Mrs. Bignell, of Taree, was deceased's only sister, but he had several brothers, viz., Allan, who is at present in South Africa ; Angus and Alec., both in Sydney ; John and James, of Laurieton ; and Daniel, of the Clarence. He was also an uncle of Mrs. H. H. Kirton, of Taree. This is the second death in the family during the past few weeks, and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved relatives.

My main problem is that either the obituary on Donald McInnes in the Townsville Bulletin 9/6/1947 where it is stated that Donald is one of eleven(11) children - ten sons and one daughter or children to John and Mary were born outside N.S.W. My searches reveal 7 boys and 3 girls recorded under Maitland - 1861 James, 1863 Catherine, 1865 Alexander, 1867 Donald ( possible grandfather), 1869 Myles, 1872 Angus, 1874 Margaret, 1876 Mary, 1878 Hugh and 1880 John William and under Manning River only 2 boys - 1864 Alexander and 1866 Angus.

Hi there,
NSW Civil Birth registrations commenced back in 1856. If you were to seek out an official transcription of the likely youngest, OR at least for the likely Donald, then you should expect to learn details about not just the baby whose birth is being registered, but about his parents, (their then ages, where they were born, married, Dad's occupation, usual address etc) but also about the older brothers/sisters of the baby being registered. (Often their names and ages if alive at the time, and at least the gender and possibly the ages of any babies who had already succumbed).
Obits can of course have flawed info, perhaps the reporter mis-heard, or mis-read the notes taken, or perhaps the grieving family member providing the info to the newspaper reporter was relying on memory and distracted by other family members needing to be comforted.
NOT ALL civil registrations from rural districts were received or fully processed at the Registrar Generals Offices in Sydney. There was no formal 'follow up' in that era if a quarterly return to the Sydney HQ was not received, or not processed. Post WWI the system became more formalised.

I think it likely that Mary McINNES's (nee McPHERSON) mother's name was Margaret.
There are a number of newspaper references to Archibald. Here are some in connection to the marriages of his children.
On Thursday, the 16th February, at St. Bridgets, Raymond Terrace, by the Rev. T. A. Lonergan, Alexander, second son of John McDonald, Four-Mile Creek, to Flora Ann, youngest daughter of Mr. Archibald McPherson.

I can see Archibald (1862), Alexander (1864), Angus (1866), Hugh (1868), and Allan (1870).
Unfortunately it isn't as easy as just looking up the indexes and finding every child and I suspect that the Maitland family is not connected to the Manning River family.
As we know that Catherine had brothers Hugh, Allan, and Donald in Townsville I would be getting either of her parents death certs for a list of children and their ages and to also confirm the McPHERSON name.

Yes, I am doubtful about the Maitland family, and yes, I agree, it is not as easy as looking up indexes .... NSW BDM indexes are only an aid, they point to actual BDM official documents. You need to scrutinise the information recorded on the document.
Official transcriptions for the NSW BDM documents are reliable, and are well recognised by family history buffs as an excellent way to obtain the information from the official records without getting the watermarked certified document required by say the NSW Supreme Court in sorting a legal dispute over the distribution of a deceased estate.

I'm descended from Donald's brother John McInnes who died 31 October 1947 aged 88 and am having the same trouble identifying the birth details.
I known of another brother James McInnes who died 11 September 1922 aged 71
Both John and James have John McInnes and Mary McPherson listed on their death certificates.
John is my Great Great Grandfather and he is supposed to be born at Bo Bo Creek about 1858

I can remember my mother saying that she heard her Great Grandfather John talked about his brother who went to Townsville and he only ever called him Donald.

Could you list John McInnes's siblings so I can check them with my records and try to find the link. His obituary mentions a number of brothers and that he came from the Clarence River area where he delivered meat. He also owned race horses in Townsville and raced them in South Africa.
Any information would be appreciated.

John's son John McKinnon McInnes and James's son John Allan McInnes, were first cousins who ran a saw mill at Ross Glenn near Kendall.
I know that there Was Donald who went to Townsville.
According to some obituaries on Trove there was a Hugh McInnes (D: 1906 - Obituary states: He was a son of the late Mr. John Mclnnes, who for 25 years resided on Taree Estate. Mrs. Bignell, of Taree, was deceased's only sister, but he had several brothers, viz., Allan, who is at present in South Africa ; Angus and Alex., both in Sydney ; John and James, of Laurieton ; and Daniel, on the Clarence) this makes me suspect that Donald may be Allan.
The John and James of Laurieton are the two above, with John being my Great Great Grandfather.
