I am trying to find the service record for George P Leach. He also went under the name of George Prague Leach & George Prigg (DoB: 1807)
I have been searching for him for an age, and would appreciate any help you can give.
Finding the search on the British library slightly confusing!!

I have 23 Sept 1807 in Ipswich but under the name PRIGG.
SO confusing, frustrating this one!!😕

Honourable East India Company. They had an army in each of the three presidencies - Bombay, Madras and Bengal - until the Mutiny. Any regiment that mutinied was disbanded and those that were loyal came under direct crown control.
The first six regiments became part of the British army during the 1860s - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Honourable_East_India_Company_regiments
These were 'European' already - ie British officers and other ranks.

I am looking into my 3x Great Grandfather, George LEACH again. Since my last post I have found the following details:
Marriage Certificate shows that when he married my 3x Grt G/M he is listed as Sgt Major, Fort William

FIBIS search revelaed the following:
Occupation prior to enlistment: Tailor (this ties in with his Father who was a tailor in Suffolk)
Town of birth: Ipswich, Suffolk
Enlisted 4/9/1828 at Westminster
Remarks: Transferred to Town Major list 23/12/1850 as Drill Sgt
Pensioned: 3/4/1850
Readmitted to the effective branch of the Army Oct 1850

I have tried to find his service number and records, but have hit a brick wall (again)

A George Leach, year of birth given as 1808, of the Town Major's Office, was buried Jul 16 1859 at the military burial ground Fort William. His rank was Conductor, a senior NCO appointment.
The record is from the British India Office Deaths and Burials. You have seen his marriage and his probate record?
On the Town Major's staff, and as a Conductor he would have been in one of the Ordnance, Commissariat or Public Works departments.
The British Library India Office list of sources has L/PWD half way down: http://indiafamily.bl.uk/ui/Sources.aspx but doesn't seem to cover earlier that 1855 for service records.

- what I think is certain is that apart from what you have already, there is nothing else on-line.

Thanks MaxD for the above. Did the HEIC recruit in the UK? I see that he was enlisted in Westminster.
I would love to know his Military number & view his service record but that's starting to look like a long shot.

They most certainly did. For many it was a way of serving in exotic climes in what was essentially (until 1857) a private army. There is a researcher who specialises in the HEIC http://militaryarchiveresearch.com/HEIC.htm who probably (I have no experience of his work) knows better than most how to find records. Whatever, there appears to be nothing on line apart from what we've seen of his marriage and burial, this guide is pretty comprehensive https://www.genguide.co.uk/source/india-office-records/234/ almost all references point to the British Library.
